Case Study about Facebook users’ Exposed Phone Number and Personal

Information Online

Introduction

With millions of Facebook users' data being misused without their consent in 2018,
Facebook and the British company Cambridge Analytics were being exposed. The goal of this
was to sway politics and advance Trump's presidential candidacy.
Later, at a court appearance, company CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologized for the trust
breach, made some suggestions for preventative measures, and announced a new data access
restriction policy.
The data of more than 500 million Facebook users were exposed in a significant data
breach, and as a result, Facebook will be subject to a class-action lawsuit in 2021. The user
information and data were just discovered on a hacker forum, despite the incident occurring in
2019.

Facebook Data Leak

Over 533 million Facebook users' personal data from 106 different countries were
exposed, including over 32 million records for US users, 11 million for UK users, and 6 million
for Indian users. It contains their contact information, Facebook IDs, complete names,
addresses, dates of birth, biographies, and, in some cases, email addresses.
Due to a flaw that the firm remedied in 2019, a Facebook spokeswoman informed
Insider that the data had been scrapped.
This is not the first time that lots of Facebook users' phone numbers have been found
exposed online. In violation of Facebook's terms of service, the vulnerability discovered in 2019
allowed millions of phone numbers to be scraped from its systems. According to Facebook, the
flaw was addressed in August 2019. Following Cambridge Analytica's exploitation of over 80
million users' data in violation of Facebook's terms of service to target voters with political
advertising during the 2016 election, Facebook committed to tightening down on bulk data-
scraping.
From a security perspective, according to Gal, Facebook couldn't do much to assist
people who had their data exposed; however, he noted that Facebook could alert users so they
could be on the lookout for fraud or phishing schemes utilizing their data.
Conclusion

This conclusion, it confirms that the Facebook Data Breach affected millions of users.
The most used social media network where data is stored and found is Facebook. The methods
used to safeguard the website, how the breach occurred, and Facebook's post assuring millions
that their privacy will be restored have all been highlighted in this case study.
