Linear Algebra (Math 2011) Assignement I

Attempt all questions by showing the necessary steps clearly.


1. Let V be the set of all real numbers x such that x ≥ 0. Define ⊕ and ⊙ as:

x ⊕ y = xy + 1 and α ⊙ x = α2 x for all x, y ∈ V and α ∈ R.

Then check whether V is a real vector space or not. Justify your answer.

2. Let M2×2 (R) be the set of all 2 × 2 matrices with entries in R. Define vector addition
and scalar multiplication as:

for all a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h ∈ R and α ∈ R. Then show that M2×2 (R) is a real vector space
and find its basis.

3. Suppose the vector u, v, w are linearly independent. Show that the vectors u + v, u −
v, u − 2v + w are linearly independent.

4. Let u = (λ, 1, 0), v = (1, λ, 1) and w = (0, 1, λ). Find all value(s) of λ which makes
{u,v,w} is a linearly dependent subset of R3 .

5. prove that the set W = {(x, y, z) ∈ R3 : 2x − 5y + 7z = 0} is a subspace of R3 .

6. (a) Prove that the set of vectors B = {(1, 1, 1), (1, 2, 3), (1, 5, 8)} form a basis for R3 .
(b) Let u = (2, 0, −1), v = (3, 1, 0), and w = (1, −1, c) where c ∈ R. Determine the
value(s) of ”c” for the set {u, v, w} to be a basis of R3 .

7. Which of the following are linear transformations T : V −→ W ? Justify your answers.

(a) Let V = R2 and W = R3 and T (x, y) = (x + y + 1, 2x − y, x + 3y).


(b) Let V = R2 and W = R4 and T (x, y) = (x + y, x − y, 2x + y, 3x − 4y).
(c) Let V = W = R2 with T (x, y) = (x − y, x2 − y 2 ).

8. Does there exist a linear transformation T : R3 −→ R2 such that

(a) T (1, 0, 1) = (1, 2), T (0, 1, 1) = (1, 0) and T (1, 1, 1) = (2, 3)?
(b) T (1, 0, 1) = (1, 2), T (0, 1, 1) = (1, 0) and T (1, 1, 2) = (2, 3)?

9. Can we construct a linear transformation T : R2 −→ R2 such that T (1, 1) = (e, 2) and


T (2, 1) = (5, 4)?
10. Let T = R3 −→ R3 be defined by T (x, y, z) = (2x+3y+4z, x+y+z, x+y+3z). Find the
value of k for which there exists a vector (x, y, z) ∈ R3 such that T (x, y, z) = (9, 3, k).

11. Let T : R3 −→ R3 be defined by T (x, y, z) = (x + 3y − 2z, x − 4y, x + 6y). Then find

(a) Kernel of T .
(b) Image of T .

12. Define the linear transformation T : R3 −→ R2 by T (x, y, z) = (3x−2y+z, −x+y+5z).


Then

(a) Find the standard matrix for T .


(b) Find the matrix of T relative to the ordered bases B1 = {(1, 0, 1), (0, 1, 1), (0, 0, 1)}
and B2 = {(1, 0), (1, 1)}.
