EBP and the Quadruple Aim

Quadruple aim plays a crucial role in healthcare because the practice stresses the

importance of healthcare staff and systems. Therefore, Sikka et al. () stated that the

Quadruple aim is to enhance healthcare professionals' patient experience and job satisfaction,

decrease costs, and enhance population health. Although evidence-based practice is

considered an effective way of improving patient care delivery, it is regarded as the standard

despite its inconsistent implementation. This paper will focus on the reflection and analysis of

the link between EBP and the Quadruple Aim.

Healthcare organizations play a crucial role in providing care services to patients.

With care costs increasing, EBP will play an essential role in enhancing care and reducing

costs to the patient. The main objective of the Quadruple Aim is to recognize the energy the

healthcare organizations place into improving patient experience, reducing healthcare

services expenses, and improving population health. Similarly, the Quadruple Aim deals with

the problem of health specialists such as physicians, nurses, and clinicians being unfulfilled

with their jobs because of the place of work discourteousness, mistreatment, disregard, and

work overload (Sikka et al., 2015). EBP does not cause any direct impact on the four aspects

of the approach; however, some linking aspects occur to health professionals since the system

is closely associated with the three elements of the Triple Aim.

The first aspect of the Quadruple Aim is patient involvement, so EBP plays a crucial

role here. Patient experience comprises various relations that patients have while obtaining

services in the healthcare system such as the care they receive from nurses, staff, and health

plans. Kim et al. (2016) emphasized that there is no association between EBP implementation

and the enhancement of patient results. Nonetheless, Crabtree et al. (2016) found that in some

situations, EBP implementation leads to a high assurance in nurses when doing literature

searches and the capacity to examine and assess evidence. Healthcare staff needs to develop

their skills and abilities continuously; therefore, since the skills obtained after EBP execution

do not directly affect patient experience, it enhances the healthcare professionals' capacity to

interpret theoretical skills to practice, demonstrating development in their professional area,

resulting in quality care delivery.

The second aspect of the Quadruple Aim is the most crucial: population health. The

healthcare system focuses on ensuring the population's health is improved. Thus, EBP

positively affects the quality of care delivery offered in hospitals by reducing increased

workforce turnover. Sikka et al. (2015) stated that sixty percent of the doctors considered

leaving practice, and seventy percent of the respondents in the survey had a colleague who

left practice due to a lack of morale. Consequently, by implementing EBP across several

healthcare facilities worldwide, a part of the turnover problem will be resolved, thus aiding in

reducing incivility. The efficacy of the healthcare system depends on the health professionals'

productivity, enhanced communication, and associations in groups of individuals working,

which would avert workplace discourteousness. More workers prefer to stay at work than

leave their career choice, and more individuals will offer the services.

Nonetheless, past opinions are associated with the issue of healthcare costs. Kim et al.

(2016) claimed that when the issue of turnover is determined, healthcare expenses and costs

will be reduced. Since there is lack of indication for an association amid occupation

fulfillment and utilization of EBP, there is a link between work fulfillment and the self-

assurance workers obtain from the implementation of EBP.

In summation, the utilization of EBP using the Triple Aim can be explained as

indirect. However, the Quadruple Aim is straightforward since it is linked to the health

system aspects, influencing other issues. EBP objectives target the patient's care and

enhancement of the health structure; extensive execution of the method can affect the issue of

employee turnover; hence, the general health organization and people well-being will

improve through EBP.
