The amount of radiation leaking out of a reactor, P units, is constant after an earthquake.
However, when the fuel rods inside start to melt, the amount of radiation leaking out increases
rapidly. The amount of radiation leaking out t min after the fuel rods begin to melt is given
by P  2t 2  12t  39 where 0  t  5.
(a) What is the amount of radiation leaking out just before the fuel rods melt? (1 mark)
(b) Using the method of completing the square, find the maximum amount of radiation
leaking out within the first 5 minutes of the fuel rods melting. (2 marks)
(c) When the radiation leaking out is at its maximum, the rescue team uses seawater to flood
the reactors. As a result, from this time onwards the radiation leaking out of the reactor is
now given by Q  At 2  9.8t  81.9 where A is a constant. When t = 6.6, the radiation
leaking out is equal to that just before the fuel rods melted. It is claimed that it is possible
to lower the amount of radiation leaking out to 30 units. Is the claim correct? Explain your
answer. (3 marks)
