Problem sheet – Module 1 and 2

1. Find the values of ′𝑐 ′ using mean value theorem for the following function
1) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 + 2𝑥 − 1, [0,1]
1 1
2) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 𝑥 , [2 , 2]
3) 𝑓(𝑥) = ln (𝑥 − 1), [2, 4]
4) 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 2 − 7𝑥 + 10 in [2, 5]

1. Verify the Mean Value Theorem on the given interval, which does not? Give reasons for your
answers for the following functions
2
1. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 , [−1,8]
𝑥 2 − 𝑥, − 2 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ −1
2. 𝑓(𝑥) = { 2
2𝑥 − 3𝑥 − 3, − 1 < 𝑥 ≤ 0
2. Sketch a graph of the following functions
(i) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 (4 − 𝑥)
(ii) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 − 3𝑥 + 3
(iii) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥, 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 2𝜋
(iv) 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 (𝑥 + 2)
using the following steps
I) Identify where the extrema of 𝑓(𝑥) occur
II) Find the intervals on which 𝑓(𝑥) is increasing and the intervals on which 𝑓(𝑥) is
decreasing
III) Find where the graph of 𝑓(𝑥) is concave up and where it is concave down
IV) Sketch the general shape of the graph for 𝑓(𝑥)
V) Plot some specific points, such as local maximum, minimum points and points of
inflection. Then sketch the curve.

and the lines 𝑥 = 2, 𝑥 = 4 about the 𝑥 − axis
5. Find the area of the region enclosed by the line 𝑦 = 3𝑥 and the curve 𝑦 = 𝑥 2 − 5𝑥.
6. Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving the region bounded by the curve 𝑦 =
𝑥 2 + 𝑥 3 and the lines 𝑥 = 2, 𝑥 = 4, about the 𝑥 − axis
7. Find the volume of the solid generated by revolving the region bounded by 𝑦 = √𝑥 , the line
