WORK PERMIT SYSTEM

Definition: A Work Permit System is a formal written system used to control

certain types of work that are identified as hazardous. The permit specifies the
work to be done and the precautions to be taken.
Aim: The primary aim of the Work Permit System is to ensure that:
1. Only authorized persons are allowed to work in hazardous areas.
2. Workers are aware of safety issues and that necessary precautions are in
place.
3. Work permits act as legal documents between the issuer and executor,
ensuring safe commencement of the job.
4. Responsibilities are distributed evenly, ensuring that all safety measures
are in place before work begins.
Purpose & Objectives:
The purpose of the Work Permit System is to describe procedures and
guidelines for carrying out jobs in the safest possible manner, including
inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration, repair, and construction. The
objectives include:
 Exercising control over hazardous activities.
 Ensuring communication between all involved parties.
 Defining and authorizing work clearly.
 Specifying precautions to be taken.
 Ensuring understanding of hazards by those executing the job.

Types of Work Permits:

Application Process for Work Permits:
Step Description
1. Identify the Determine the type of work to be carried out and
Work Type identify the corresponding permit required.
2. Permit Request The worker or contractor applies for the permit by
submitting a request form to the appropriate authority.

and the necessary precautions.
4. Permit Review The safety officer or authorized person reviews the
request and risk assessment.
5. Issuance of If all safety measures are in place, the permit is issued
Permit with specific instructions and conditions.

other involved parties is critical.
 Safety Measures: All safety measures must be in place before starting
work.
 Documentation: Permits must be documented and stored for future
reference.
 Training: Workers must be trained on the types of permits and the
process of obtaining them.
Roles and Responsibilities:
