Significant Inventions
Significant Inventions
Enriquez
Concrete
Concrete was invented and first used in the Ancient era. Ancient
concrete otherwise known as “opus caementicum” or Roman concrete,
first emerged in Rome at around 27 B.C. At this era, Romans create
concrete by mixing limestone with volcanic ash to form a mortar, then
packed this thick substance together with chunks of brick or volcanic
tuff to form basic materials for constructing infrastructures. Nowadays,
concrete has played a significant role in building infrastructures.
Without it, massive and sturdy infrastructures would not be built.
Middle Ages Invention
Printing Press
The printing press is a device that allows for the mass production
of uniform printed matter, mainly text in the form of books, pamphlets
and newspapers. It was first created in China through the
conceptualization of Bi Sheng during the Northern Song Dynasty at
around 960-1127 A.D. It made use of printing paper books from ceramic
porcelain china materials. The invention revolutionized society there
before being further developed in Europe in the 15th Century by
Johannes Gutenberg and his invention of the Gutenberg press. With
this, Johannes Gutenberg’s invention serves as the basis for the modern
printing press because he used new methods and equipment to speed
up and automate the process of printing. Gutenberg’s invention
became one of the key inventions that made the European Renaissance
possible. Nowadays, the concept of the printing press paved way to the
invention and modernization of printers that enhanced people’s way of
work life and printing process.
Modern Era Invention
Smart Watch
In 1998, pioneer inventor Steve Mann designed and developed
the very first Linux Smartwatch in Canada. After presenting the
smartwatch at the IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference
(IEEE ISSCC2000) on February 7, 2000, he was rightfully hailed as the
“father of wearable computing” which is a very deserving title in his
work field. His invention paved way to the idea of incorporating modern
technology into a wristwatch. Nowadays, smartwatches have been a
useful device in the society because it enables a person to use many
different digital functionalities on a wristwatch. Smartwatches are now
used to read text messages, monitor the pulse rate and oxygen
saturation, and many more. These specific features that require
different devices were all put in a smartwatch which enhances the
lifestyle and productivity of people at the comfort of their homes and
spaces.
