2 Transformations of Logarithmic Functions

Unit 8 – Exponential and Logarithmic Functions
MHF 4U1: Advanced Functions

Minds On:

Given f(x) = a log [k(x – d)] + c, state the variable that is responsible for the transformations in # 1 – 4.

1. Vertical stretch / compression and reflection in the x-axis

2. Vertical translation
3. Horizontal stretch / compression and reflection in the y-axis
4. Horizontal translation
5. State the transformations that are occurring given: y =f [0.5(x + 3)]

6. State the transformations that are occurring given: y = f (-x + 2)

7. State the transformations that are occurring given: y = ½ f(x+1) + 4

8. Evaluate y = 10-1 and state the coordinates of its inverse.

9. Evaluate y = 100 and state the coordinates of its inverse.
10. Evaluate y = 101 and state the coordinates of its inverse.

Remember the points of a parent function can be transformed using: . The new
coordinates are also called images of the parent points.

Action:

Example 1: Describe the transformations that must be applied to y=log x in order to get
y = -½ log [1/3 (x + 4)] – 5.

 Vertical compression by a factor of ½

 Reflection in the x-axis

 Horizontal stretch by a factor of 3

(b)

 Shift four units left

 Shift five units down

Example 2: Given the parent function f(x) = log x, state the equation of the function that results from
the following transformations: vertical stretch by a factor of 3, horizontal compression by a factor of
½, reflection in the y-axis, shift one unit right and 2 units up.

Example 3: Given the function y = -3 log[2(x + 4)] – 3.

(a) State the coordinates of the points that are images of the points: , (1, 0), and (10, 1).

(b) State the equation of the asymptote.

(c) State the domain and range.

(d) Graph the function.
