Class-XII

Subject- Chemistry
Chapter -9 Amines

1. Give chemical test to distinguish between the following pairs of compounds:

(i) Ethylamine and aniline.
(ii) Aniline and benzalamine.
(iii) Methylamine and dimethylamine
(iv) Aniline and N-methylaniline.
(v) Dimethylamine and Trimethylamine.
2. Write IUPAC name of the following:
(a) H2N-CH2-CH2-CH=CH2, (b) CH3N(C2H5)COCH3

3. In the following cases rearrange the compounds as directed:

(i) C6H5NH2, C6H5N(CH3)2, (C2H5)2NH, CH3NH2 (In an increasing order of basic strength).
(ii) Aniline, p-nitroaniline, p-toluidine (In a decreasing order of basic strength).
(iii) C2H5NH2, C6H5NHCH3, (C2H5)2NH, C6H5NH2 (In an increasing order of pKb values).

4. Complete the following chemical equations:

𝐍𝐚𝐎𝐇
(i) C6H5N2Cl + C6H5NH2 →⎯⎯⎯→
(ii) C6H5N2Cl + CH3CH2OH
(iii) RNH2 + CHCl3 + KOH
(iv) C6H5NH2 + CHCl3 + KOH
(v) C6H5N2Cl + H3PO2 + H2O
(vi) RCONH2 + Br2 + 4 NaOH
(vii) C6H5NH2 + Br2 (aq)
(viii) C2H5NH2 + C6H5SO2Cl
(ix) C2H5NH2 + HNO2
5. Predict giving reasons, the order of basicity of the following compounds in (i) gaseous phase and (ii) in
aqueous solutions: (CH3)3, (CH3)2NH, CH3NH2, NH3.

6. How can you convert an amide in to an amine having one carbon less than the starting compound?
(a) Name the reaction.
(b) Give the IUPAC name and the structure of the amine obtained by the above method if the amide is 3-
chlorobutanamide.
7. Giving an example for each describe the following reactions:
(i) Hoffman bromamide reaction.
(ii) Gattermann reaction.
(iii) A coupling reaction.
(iv) Carbylamine reaction.

9. Write a chemical reaction in which the iodide ion replaces the diazonium group in a diazonium salt.

REASONING BASED QUESTIONS:

S.No. Question/Statement: Reason/Answer:
1 Why is alkylamine more basic than ammonia?

2 Why do primary amines have higher boiling

points than tertiary amines?
3 Direct nitration of aniline is not carried out,
explain why?

4 The presence of a base is needed in the

ammonolysis of alkyl halides.
5 Aromatic primary amines cannot be prepared by
Gabriel phthalimide synthesis.
6 Aniline does not undergo Friedel Crafts
alkylation.

7 Although –NH2 group is an ortho and para

directing group, nitration of aniline gives along with
ortho and para derivatives meta
derivatives also.
8 Ethylamine is soluble in water whereas aniline is
insoluble.
9 The pKb of aniline is higher than that of
methylamine.

10 Why do amines behaves as nucleophiles?

11 In amines the C-N-H/C bond angle is less than 109.5o

12 For reduction of nitro compounds into amines

Fe/HCl is preferred instead of Sn/HCl

13 To convert alkyl halide(R-X) into amines (R- NH2)

ammonolysis is not suitable
14 Aniline on exposure to air and light turns into
coloured
15 Lower amines are soluble in water

16 Amines (R-NH2) are less soluble than alcohols (R-

OH)
17 Amines (R-NH2) are lower boiling than alcohols (R-
OH)
18 Order of b. pt : primary amine > sec. amine > tert.
Amine

19 In gaseous phase the order of basic strength : 30-

amine > 20-amine > 10-amine > NH3

20 In aq. state the base strength order: (C2H5)2NH

>(C2H5)3N >C2H5NH2 > NH3 (20 >30 >10 >NH3)
: (CH3)2NH >
CH3NH2 > (CH3)3N > NH3 ( 20 > 10 > 30 > NH3)
21 R-NH2 is stronger base than NH3
22 Base strength : p-methoxy aniline > aniline > p- nitro
aniline
23 Acylation of aniline is carried out in presence of pyridine

24 -NH2 group in benzene ring is ortho –para directing for

electrphilic substitution
25 Bromination of aniline gives 2,4,6-tribromo aniline
