Mathematical Methods for Physics II/Assignment 3– Complex analysis 1

Course name: Mathematical Methods for Physics II

Course code: PH3163/PH6733, August 2024 semester
Instructor: Bijay Kumar Agarwalla

1: Show the following I

′ 1 f (z)
f (z0 ) = dz
2πi c (z − z0 )2
where f (z) is an analytic function on and inside the contour which is chosen as a circle
with unit radius and z0 being at the center. The contour is closed in a counter-clockwise
manner. Comment on how this integral value depends on the choice of the contour? Also,
if the contour is closed in a clockwise manner what would be integration value? Think of
the generalization of the above integral if the denominator of the integrand has (z − z0 )n .

2: Show that I
1 dz
= δn,0
2πi c (z − z0 )n+1
where n is any integer and δn,0 is the Kronecker delta.

3: Evaluate I I
dz
(i) , (ii) z 2 dz
c z c
where in both cases the contour is the same which is a square with its vertices located
at ± 12 ± 2i . Think about the result that you can obtained using circular contour? How
important is the shape of the contour to evaluate these integrals?

4: Evaluate I
dz
c (z 2− 1)
where C is the circle |z − 1| = 1.

5: Evaluate I
dz
c (z 2 + z)
where C is the circle |z| = R. Calculate the value of the integral when R > 1 and when
R < 1.

6: Evaluate
sin2 z − z 2
I
dz
c (z − a)3
where the contour encircles the point a.
Mathematical Methods for Physics II/Assignment 3– Complex analysis 2

7: Consider a function f (z) which is of the form

g(z)
f (z) =
h(z)

where g(z) and h(z) are analytic at z = a, and h(z) has a simple zero at z(a) whereas
g(a) ̸= 0. Therefore f (z) has a simple pole at z = a. Show that its residue is

g(a)
Resz=a f (z) =
h′ (a)

8: Determine the singularities (nature of the pole) of the following functions and calculate
the residues
1 z
(a) sinh z
(b) sec z (c) tan z (d) cot z (e) tanh z (f) coth z (g) ze3 (h) z2 (z−1)
z+3
3 (z+1) (i)
sin z−z
z6
1/z
(j) ze
