Is Modern Art Truly Art?

Kaysha Tanaya Octivia/XIIMIPA3/22

Modern art is an art that has an abstract and unusual form that triggers much debate,
can modern art be called a "true" art? This question has been around since the era of
modernism, around the early 20th century. At that time, artists began to represent their
emotions and ideas in new ways. Although modern art is now exhibited everywhere, the
question still divides art critics and audiences.
Some people argue that modern art deserves to be considered art, why? because art is
not bound by boundaries. Unlike classical art, which often uses realistic depictions, modern
art emphasizes concepts and emotions. Art Movements like abstract expressionism,
surrealism, and cubism show that art doesn’t have to look realistic to have meaning. for
example, Jackson Pollock's drip paintings that look so messy, but they convey a sense of
freedom and spontaneity that expresses feelings beyond words.
In addition, modern art requires a person to interpret it in their own way, seeing what
feels meaningful to them personally. This is what makes it interesting, because the
perspective of the viewer will add meaning to the artwork. Art that makes people think and
feel deeply achieves one of its main purposes.
However, critics argue that modern art lacks the skill and clarity that can define it as
art. Indeed, many find it difficult to appreciate works that are made haphazardly. For
example, a simple dot on a canvas may not require the same level of skill or effort as a
detailed painting like “Starry Night” or “The Swing”, making it harder for some to accept it
as “true” art. Furthermore, modern art can be difficult to understand, especially when it
doesn’t depict anything recognizable. This abstract approach can make viewers feel
disconnected, as they may struggle to grasp the artist’s intent. As a result, modern art often
feels less accessible to a wider audience.
There is a perspective that modern art is indeed art, but it serves a different purpose
from traditional forms. While classical art often prioritizes beauty and technical skill, modern
art can prioritize emotion, spontaneity, or even social commentary. In this case, modern art
expands the definition of art, by recognizing that art can be diverse and adaptable.
In the end, whether modern art is truly art might depend on the individual’s view of
what art should achieve. Should art be a precise portrayal of reality? Or should it challenge
our perceptions, inviting us to think, question, and feel? The debate surrounding modern art’s
reflects its success in provoking thought a quality many would argue is central to all art.
