1 Geotech Asia 2025

GeoVadis
The Future of Geotechnical Engineering

ORGANISED BY
INDIAN GEOTECHNICAL SOCIETY
Dates: 7th – 10th October 2025
Venue: Taj Cidade de Goa Horizon, Goa
About ISSMGE
The International Society originated from the First International Conference on Soil Mechanics
and Foundation Engineering held in Harvard in 1936, attended by 206 delegates from 20 countries.
Following its success, an Executive Committee was formed with Karl Terzaghi as President and
Arthur Casagrande as Secretary, but the Second ICSMFE was delayed until 1948 due to World War II.
The Third ICSMFE in Zurich in 1953 marked the firm establishment of the International Society, with
Terzaghi as President and Donald Taylor as Secretary. A.W. Skempton assumed the presidency in
1957. The quadriennial ICSMFE pattern began in 1953, and in 1985, the Jubilee Conference in San
Francisco drew 2000 delegates. Regional conferences, starting with the Australasian Conference
in 1952, have become a regular occurrence. The Society evolved with the formation of the Steering
Committee in 1981, which became the Board in 1985, and the name changed to the International
Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering in 1997 to better reflect its activities. The
ISSMGE is the pre-eminent professional body representing the interests and activities of
Engineers, Academics and Contractors all over the world that actively participate in geotechnical
engineering. As a truly global organisation, the ISSMGE provides a focus for professional leadership
to some 90 Member Societies and around 20,000 individual members. Currently Dr. Marc Ballouz is
serving as the president of ISSMGE.

Indian Geotechnical Society

The Indian National Society of Soil Mechanics and Foundation
Engineering was established in the year 1948, soon after the
second International Conference on Soil Mechanics and
Foundation Engineering held at Rotterdam. The Society was
affiliated to the International Society in the same year and
since then it has strived to fulfill and promote the objectives
of the International Society. In December 1970, the name,
Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) was adopted. In January
1994, it hosted XIII International Conference on Soil Mechanics
and Foundation Engineering. Indian Geotechnical Society
celebrated its 75 years of formation last year and currently
running its 76th year.
About Asian Regional Technical Committees (AsRTCs)
The ISSMGE Asian Regional Technical Committees are a specialized group focused on advancing soil
mechanics and geotechnical engineering within the Asian region. The committee plays a crucial role
in organizing conferences, workshops, and seminars to facilitate the dissemination of research
findings, best practices, and innovations. Additionally, it fosters networking opportunities and
encourages cooperation among member countries to address common challenges and promote
sustainable solutions in geotechnical engineering. Overall, the ISSMGE Asian Regional Technical
Committees contributes significantly to the advancement and enhancement of geotechnical
engineering practices and standards across Asia. ISSMGE has 8 Asian Regional Technical Committees
each dealing with specific subject areas in the field of geotechnical engineering. The active
ISSMGE Asian regional committees are AsRTC1: Geotechnical Mitigation and Adaptation to
Climate Change – induced Disasters in Asia – Pacific Regions, AsRTC3: Geotechnology for natural
hazards, AsRTC6: Urban Engineering, AsRTC7: Thick Deltaic Deposits, AsRTC10: Urban geo-
informatics, AsRTC14: Smart Observational Method (SOMe), AsRTC18: Mega Foundations and
AsRTC19: Geo-engineering for conservation of heritage monuments and historical sites.

About 1st Geotech Asia 2025 & Asian Regional Conferences

Every four years, the Asian Regional Conferences are held following a bidding and voting process
among member nations. The 17th Asian Regional Conference, hosted by the Kazakhstan Geotechnical
Society, took place from August 14th to 18th, 2023, at the Hilton Astana Hotel in Nur-Sultan,
Kazakhstan. Under the theme "Smart Geotechnics for Smart Societies," the conference drew over 600
attendees, including scientists and experts from 90 countries, notably influential figures from
leading construction hubs in Asia such as Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, Turkey, and India.
With 26 countries in the Asian Region and the ARC happening only once every four years, many
countries miss out on the chance to host the conference. In light of this, a new series called Geotech
Asia, to be held once every four years between the Asian Regional Conferences, was proposed.
During the 17th ARC, the idea for Geotech Asia was introduced, and India was chosen to host the
inaugural event in 2025 and 18th Asian Regional Conference (18ARC) is scheduled to be held at
Thailand in 2027. The Indian Geotechnical Society, which hosted the first Asian Regional Conference
in 1960, will also organize the first Geotech Asia Conference. Scheduled for October 7th to 10th,
2025, in Goa, the conference’s organizing committee is inviting researchers, academics, and
practising engineers to submit papers for presentation. As the first event in the series, India
anticipates a significant turnout from member nations and their representatives.
