problems

1. find the Fourier series of a sawtooth periodic signal x(t) of period T0 =1. The
period of x(t) is 𝑥1(𝑡) = 𝑟(𝑡)[𝑢(𝑡) − 𝑢(𝑡 − 1)]

(a) Carefully plot x(t) and compute the Fourier coefficients 𝑋𝑘 using the
integral definition.

(b) An easier way to do this is to use the Laplace transform of x1(t). Find 𝑋𝑘
this way.

2. Consider a sawtooth signal x(t) with period T0 =2 and period

𝑡 0≤ t < 1
𝑥1(𝑡) = {
0 otherwise

(a) Find the Fourier coefficients 𝑋𝑘 using the Laplace transform. Consider the
cases when k is odd and even (𝑘 ≠ 0).

(b) Let 𝑦(𝑡) = 𝑥(−𝑡). Find the Fourier coefficients 𝑌𝑘 .

(c) The sum 𝑧(𝑡) = 𝑥 (𝑡) + 𝑦(𝑡) is a triangular function. Find the Fourier
coefficients 𝑍𝑘 and compare them to 𝑋𝑘 + 𝑌𝑘 .

3. Obtain the Fourier coefficients for The full-wave rectified signal xf(t) and half-
wave rectifier signal xh(t)

If xf(t) has a period T0 =1 and its period from 0 to 1 is

𝑥1(𝑡) = 𝑠𝑖𝑛(𝜋𝑡) 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 1

while the period for the half-wave rectifier signal xh(t) is

sin(πt) 0 ≤ t ≤ 1
𝑥2(𝑡) = {
0 1 < t ≤2

with period T1 =2.

4. Consider the following periodic signals x(t) and y(t), both of period T0 =2 sec,
and with a period from 0 ≤ 𝑡 ≤ 𝑇0 equal to

𝑥1(𝑡) = 𝑢(𝑡) − 𝑢(𝑡 − 1)

88
𝑦1(𝑡) = 𝑟(𝑡) − 2𝑟(𝑡 − 1) + 𝑟(𝑡 − 2)

Find the Fourier series coefficients of x(t) and y(t)

5. Consider two periodic signals: x(t) of period T0 =2 and y(t) of period T1 =1,
and with periods

𝑥1(𝑡) = 𝑢(𝑡) − 𝑢(𝑡 − 1) 0≤𝑡 ≤2

𝑦1(𝑡) = 𝑢(𝑡) − 𝑢 (𝑡 − 0.5) 0≤𝑡 ≤ 1

Find the Fourier series coefficients for x(t) and y(t).
