4 .

A Daughter’s Love

B. 1. King Lear had ruled his kingdom for

many years. Since he was growing old, he
felt that it was time to pass on his
kingdom to his daughters. So, King Lear
decided to divide his kingdom among his
three daughters.

2. The two eldest daughters lied to the

king. Goneril said that he was dearer to
her than her eyesight or even her life
and that no child had ever loved her
father more than she loved him. Regan
said that she was happiest whenever
she was able to serve him.
3. Cordelia was honest in her reply to her
father. She told him that he was her father
and had cared for her, fed her
and loved her. Therefore, she obeyed him,
loved him and honoured him and loved
him as she should, neither more nor less.

4. England and France were at war with

each other and Cordelia could not enter
England as she was the Queen of France.
She was worried about her father’s health.
So she decided to attack England and
rescue her father.
However, the French army was defeated
and she was imprisoned. It was in prison
that Cordelia met her father.
C. 1. a. King Lear said these words to his
youngest daughter, Cordelia.

b. King Lear was angry with his daughter

because she said that he was her father
who had cared for her, fed her
and loved her. So, she loved him and
honoured him. The king was disappointed
and angry that Cordelia only
felt a sense of duty towards him and so he
said these words.

c. Immediately after King Lear said these

words, the king of France, who was
present in Lear’s court, expressed
his wish to marry Cordelia. She agreed and
they left for France.

2. a. Cordelia said these words to her

father, King Lear.

b. The listener told her that she looked

like his daughter, Cordelia. He requested
her not to laugh at him because
perhaps he was being foolish due to old
age.

c. They met in a prison.

D. Think and answer

1. King Lear was unhappy about Cordelia’s

reply because his two elder daughters had
expressed great love for him,
the elder saying that he was dearer than
her own life and the second daughter
saying that she was happiest when
she was with her father. He had thought
that Cordelia too loved him greatly and
would speak like her sisters, but
Cordelia was honest and told him that she
loved him because he was her father who
had fed her and cared for
her, so she respected, loved and
honoured him. She told the truth but he
was angry, thinking that Cordelia only
felt a sense of duty towards him.
2. We know that Cordelia truly loved her
father because she was very worried
about his health and safety, and took
great risks to meet him. England and
France were at war and as Queen of
France, she could not enter England. So
she attacked England to rescue her father.
She was defeated and taken prisoner. She
met her father in the prison.
