x = log10 laboratory result
z-score = ( x - X )
X = log10 assigned value
σ
σ = the fixed standard deviation for the test
parameter
Column A 'Identification code': Enter any code that identifies the z-score. For example, this may be the
HPA laboratory identification code, a sample identifier allocated in your own laboratory, or the initials of a
member of your staff.
Column C 'Parameter': Enter the name of the selected parameter. For example, ACC, coliform,
enterococci.
Column D 'Your result': Enter your actual result for the selected parameter (not the log10 value). The
log10 value will be calculated automatically and will appear in the adjacent column to the right (Column
E).
Column F 'Participants; median': Enter the participants' median (assigned value) from the distribution
report for your selected parameter. The log10 value will be calculated automatically and will appear in the
adjacent column to the right (Column G).
Column H 'Fixed SD for z-score (σ): Enter the σ-value (fixed standard deviation value for the parameter)
which will normally be 0.35, except for Legionella enumerations where it is 0.55.
Your z-score will be calculated automatically and will appear in the adjacent column to the right
(Column I). If you are using Microsoft® Office 2007, automatic colour coding (green, amber, red) in the z-
score
cell will help to alert you to z-scores that exceed ± 2.0. It is usually recommended that z-scores
exceeding ± 2.0 are investigated to establish the possible cause.
