Exercise 7 - Text around a Circle (self-
learning)
1. Create a new file. On the menu, choose Image -> Guides -> New Guide (by Percent).

2. Set Horizontal as Direction, and 50 as Position (in %).

3. Repeat the above step, and then set Vertical as Direction.

4. On the menu, choose View -> Snap to Guides.

5. Use Ellipse Select Tool to draw a circle.

6. On the menu, choose Select to Path to create a path from selection.

7. On the menu, choose Select -> None.

8. Go to the Paths panel.

Click the Visibility button.

Then, the path will become visible.

9. Go back to the Layers panel. Select the Text Tool.

10. Create one line of text. Type “Hello”.

11. Create another line of text. Type “World”.

12. Right-click the “Hello” layer, and then choose Text along Path.

13. Click the Visibility button of the “Hello” layer.

14. Create a new transparent layer.

15. Go to the Paths panel. Right-click “Path”, and then choose Path to Selection.

16. On the menu, choose Edit -> Fill with FG color.

17. On the menu, choose Select -> None.

18. Go back to the Layers panel. Choose the Rotate Tool.

19. Rotate the text.

20. On the menu, choose Layer -> Layer to the Image Size.

21. Select the “World” layer. Then, select the Flip Tool.

22. Click the Path button on the Tool Options panel so as to apply the flipping operation to
the path later.

23. Right-click the “World” layer, and then choose Text along the Path.

24. Create a new transparent layer.

25. Turn off the visibility of the “World” layer.

26. Go to the Paths panel. Right-click the path, and then choose Path to Selection.

27. On the menu, choose Edit -> Fill with FG color.

28. On the menu, choose Select -> None.

29. Go to the Paths panel. Turn off the Visibility of the Selection.

30. Go to the Layers Panel. Double-click the Background layer, and then set the opacity of
the layer to 0.

31. To export the changes, on the menu, choose File -> Export As.
Set ``ex7.png” as the file name, and then click the Export button.

Exercise 8 - Layer Mask

1. On the menu, choose File -> Open as Layers … to open the images ex8image1.jpeg and
ex8image2.jpeg.

2. On the Layers Panel, we should have two layers.

Right-click the top layer, and then choose Add Layer Mask.

3. Select a White mask and press Add.

The layer mask has now been added to the top layer. (A white box appears on the layer.)

Now, any operation performed on the canvas will apply to the mask instead of the layer
itself.

4. Set the foreground and background colors. (For example, set Black as the foreground
color and White as the background color.

5. Use the Rectangle Select Tool to select the upper portion of the image.

6. Use the Bucket Fill Tool to fill the selection.

After we click the selected rectangle, we will immediately see what’s beneath the mask.
Painting in Black makes the underlying layer visible.

7. Use the Rectangle Select Tool to select another portion of the image.

8. Change the foreground color to Gray, and then use the Bucket Fill Tool to apply the
foreground color to the selected region.

Now, we can note that different levels of gray applied to the layer mask determine the
opacity of the layer.

9. Choose File -> Save to save the file as ex8.xcf.

Exercise 9 - Selective Colorization

1. On the menu, choose File -> Open as Layers … to open the image ex9.jpeg.

2. On the Layers Panel, right-click the layer and choose Duplicate Layer.

3. Select the upper layer. On the menu, choose Colors -> Desaturate -> Color to Gray.

4. On the Layers panel, right-click the upper layer and choose Add Layer Mask.

5. Set the foreground color to Black.

6. Select the Paintbrush Tool.

7. Use the Paintbrush Tool to paint on the frontmost slice of orange.

8. Choose File -> Save to save the file as ex9.xcf.
