1. A block of mass 1 kg is attached to a spring with force constant 𝑘 = N/m. The CO4
4
motion of the block is governed by the equation:

𝑑2 𝑥 𝑘
+ 𝑥=0
𝑑𝑡 2 𝑚
3
where 𝑘 is force constant and 𝑚 is the mass of the body. It is pulled 10 m from its
equilibrium position and released from rest. Find the position of the block at any
time t.

2. Suppose the velocity of the flowing water is modeled by the vector field 𝑣⃗(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = CO3
2𝑥𝑧𝑖̂ − 𝑦 2 𝑗̂ + 4𝑦𝑧 𝑘̂ m/sec. Find the amount of water per second that flows (flux)
across the closed cube bounded by the planes 𝑥 = 0, 𝑥 = 1, 𝑦 = 0, 𝑦 = 1, 𝑧 = 0 and
𝑧 = 1.
3. 1 𝑑𝑁 (𝐾−𝑁)
Show that a logistic equation can be written as 𝑁 𝑑𝑡 = 𝑟 , where symbols have CO5
𝐾
their usual meanings. Deduce that 𝐾 is the limiting population size.
𝑑𝑥
4. Solve the logistic differential equation = 𝑥(𝑎 − 𝑏𝑥), where 𝑎, 𝑏 > 0. Also, find CO5
𝑑𝑡
the point of inflexion.

5. Using the principle of superposition, find the solution of the differential equation CO4
𝑦 ′ + 2𝑦 = 2 + 3𝑒 −2𝑡 if 𝑦1 (𝑡) = 1/2 is the solution of 𝑦 ′ + 2𝑦 = 1 and 𝑦2 (𝑡) =
𝑡𝑒 −2𝑡 is the solution of 𝑦 ′ + 2𝑦 = 𝑒 −2𝑡 .

6. Suppose 𝐹⃗ (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = 2𝑦 𝑖̂ + 𝑥 2 𝑗̂̂ + 𝑥𝑦 𝑘̂ and let 𝒞 be the curve of intersection of CO3

the plane 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 1 and the cylinder 𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 = 1. Use Green’s theorem to
compute the absolute value of the line integral.

7. The temperature at a point (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) in space is given by 𝑇(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = 𝑥 2 + CO4

𝑦 2 − 𝑧. A mosquito located at (1,1,2) desires to fly in such a direction that it
will get warm as much as possible. In what direction should it fly?

8. Find the circulation of field 𝑭 = (𝑥 2 − 𝑦)𝒊 + 4𝑧𝒋 + 𝑥 2 𝒌 around the curve 𝐶 CO3
in which the plane 𝑧 = 2 meets the cone 𝑧 = √𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 , counterclockwise as
shown in the figure below.
