Introduction
The goal of the researcher is to investigate or dig deeper about the impact of
social media on social awareness of HUMSS students. This study will measure the
impact of social media on the social awareness of the HUMSS students. It is how
they understand and digest the information they see on social media.
It motivates the researchers to seek for answers regarding to some
questions about the impact of social media to determine whether social media has a
negative or positive impact in the HUMSS students' social awareness. It is important
to understand whether this exposure has a positive or negative effect on their social
awareness. (Olubunmi et al. 2016) suggest that while social media can help students
communicate and learn, too much time spent on these platforms may lead to
distractions and affect their academic performance. Similarly, Akbar and Özgül
(2018) highlight that while social media can offer academic benefits, it also takes
away time from studying and other educational activities. This study aims to
investigate the most relevant or frequently used social media platforms by students,
the type of topics they encounter or engage with, determine how often students
encounter certain social issues on these platforms, and how social media exposure
enhances social awareness. People are more likely to respond to emotionally
charged political messages on social media sites like Facebook, which leads to more
interactions (Tarullo, 2020). Wang and Cai (2018) found that many Chinese college
students have access to social media and know about politics in their own country
and worldwide. Despite the prevalent use of social media, empirical research is
needed to be able to identify its specific impact on the awareness of the students
(Disha Agarwal et al., 2024).
According to Olubunmi et al. (2016), based on the results of the study they
conducted, the majority of the students spend most of their time using social media
platforms therefore, exploring the social media and a wide variety of platforms
reduces the time they actually spend on studying which is a negative impact of social
media on students. According to Akbar and Özgül (2018), their study is about
determining activities performed by students on the social media platforms and how
much time they spent on these sites in their routine in daily life. After selecting the
research instrument and the target population, all is set to conduct the research.
Based on the results of the survey, Facebook and Twitter (X) was the most
commonly used social media platforms by the respondents. Students believed these
sites helped them academically, with their homework and encouraged them to
concentrate on their studies, affecting their academic performance positively. We
now live in a networked world where everyone is "connected" to everyone else
through a variety of communication channels. This world has become smaller due to
new communication methods and strategies. Communication has been transformed
by the new media culture of computer-mediated means of production, diffusion, and
exchange of ideas. All phases of communication, including acquisition, manipulation,
storage, and distribution, have become easier. With the help of the latest innovations
in the communication area, digital multimedia-rich communication is now possible,
and communication is now richer in entertaining and educational content as well as
more informative. In order to solve societal challenges, it is important that effective
digital modalities or content be designed and developed for communication (Niket
Mehta et al., 2015).
Theoretical Framework
This study is titled Social Media Impact Theory and it is developed and published by
Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad in 2023 by "Port Elizabeth Bay Book Publishing, Special Edition". It
is a theory that is focused on studying various ways of how social media is not only a set of
digital platforms for social interactions but can also be used to influence public opinion. The
impact of social media can be felt through various ways such as psychologically, sociological,
and economic. In this study, the impact of social media on social awareness of the HUMSS
students is under the sociological impact from the social media impact theory for the reason
that social awareness is incorporated with identifying social norms, understanding different
political views, and being updated with cultural trends (Rachmad, 2023).
Social media is a set of digital platforms where users can interact, collaborate, share
information, represent themselves, and communicate with other users freely. A common
characteristic of every social media platform is the freedom of dialogue of users which makes
social media have both positive and negative impacts on students (Kurniawan, et al., 2022).
Social media usage has caused changes in the pattern of social interaction up to this day. This
phenomenon had major impacts, such as the increased global connectivity. It needs to be
recognized that these impacts are not only positive and that it can also present challenges to
the people that are using social media such as the spread of inaccurate or harmful information
(Azzaakiyyah, 2023).

more variables.

by individuals or an organization that are made available online (Merriam Webster,
2024). Websites are relevant to the study as it is under the social media and students
often use different varieties of websites.

2022). In this study, these skills and habits that are gained by the researchers are
considered as acquisition.
PRECISION The degree refinement with which an operation is performed oar a
measurement stated (Meriam Webster, 2023). In this study, this will be the detail or
the right and accurate information if the researchers know their obligation.
