Sir,
Subject: Unhygienic conditions in trains
Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I wish to draw the attention of the General Manager, Southern Railway
and the concerned authorities towards the prevailing unhygienic conditions in the trains.
Recently when I was travelling from Bengaluru city to Vasco aboard the Vasco Express, I found that the coach was
infested with cockroaches. On further observation, l found that all the coaches also had rodents problem. Seeing all this
was very disgusting. It was hard to sit watching the cockroaches and rodents running here and there. Moreover, the
toilets in the train were not clean. The canteen team and their uniform stank, the utensils used for serving beverages were
dirty and worn out; you would rather starve the journey if you didn’t pack food for the journey. It was painful to see
railway labourers working on the tracks for a living knowing that the tracks were full of human waste. India claims to
have considerable high technologies but no effort has been made to improve the lavatory system. The foreign tourists
travelling with us were very disappointed and were highly critical of the hygiene situation in our country. I wonder how
many thousand commuters have suffered in silence.
The unhygienic conditions need to be checked soon, as they are a health hazard. Regular monitoring is required. A
special agency should be appointed for this task.

I hope my letter would find a suitable space in your newspaper and the authorities make a note of the situation and take
remedial action.
Yours sincerely,

(i) Mushroom Growth of Slums in Big Cities
by Komal
In almost all big cities in the country, there is a mushroom growth of slums where people are living in inhuman
conditions. Slums arise from extensive urban growth. Unchecked land prices and unaffordable housing has forced the
poor to search for informal solutions, which has resulted in mushrooming of slums and squatter settlements.
Slums are largely inhabited by the poor and socially weak sections of society, which comprise heterogenous and
ethically multi-racial groups. People here live in unhygienic and congested places, devoid of basic necessities for a
healthy life like proper drainage, water supply and sanitation. It is because the local administrations always fail to

.
provide urban civic amenities and sewage facilities to these slum areas.
The authorities need to seriously deal with this incessant growth of slums. The best way to deal with this problem of
slums in cities would be to stop the migration of landless labourers from rural areas to the urban areas by providing
employment avenues in villages. Making provision for affordable housing for these emigrants may also prevent the
coming up of slums.
(ii) Chlorine Gas Leak Causes Panic in Local Factory
By reporter: Sonali Sharma
Meerut, September 11, 2024
A major chlorine gas leak occurred yesterday at a chemical plant located just outside the city, causing widespread
panic and significant health concerns among the local residents. The incident took place around 3:00 PM at XYZ
Chemical Plant, situated in the industrial area on the outskirts of Meerut.
According to initial reports, the leak was caused by a failure in the cooling system, which led to an increase in pressure
within the storage tank. This pressure buildup eventually caused the tank to rupture, releasing a large quantity of
chlorine gas into the atmosphere. Chlorine gas, known for its toxic properties, can cause severe respiratory issues and
other health complications upon inhalation.
Emergency response teams were quick to arrive at the scene, evacuating the plant and surrounding areas. Medical
teams treated over 50 individuals for symptoms ranging from mild respiratory distress to severe chemical burns.
Unfortunately, two workers who were in close proximity to the leak succumbed to their injuries.
The financial impact of the incident is still being assessed, but preliminary estimates suggest that the factory may face
losses amounting to several crores due to halted production and damage to equipment. The factory has been
temporarily shut down, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the leak and to assess the
extent of the damage. Authorities have assured the public that measures are being taken to prevent such incidents in
the future.
Residents are advised to stay indoors and keep windows closed until the air quality improves. The local administration
has assured the public that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure their safety.

French. M. Hamel was a French teacher and that day was going to be his last French lesson at the school. So he dressed
in his best Sunday clothes to mark this special occasion.
(ii) The poem 'Keeping Quiet' teaches us to take out some time from our busy schedules to introspect ourselves. It also
teaches us to stop being self-centered. It believes in the adage 'Live and let Live'. The world would be a much better and
happier place to live in if we follow the principles of unity, harmony and brotherhood.
(iii)Gandhiji decided to go to Muzzafarpur before Champaran because he wanted to obtain complete information about the
condition of the peasants from the lawyers who frequently represented the peasants in courts.
(iv)Unlike various other celebrities who express a strong dislike for interviews and consider it an encroachment upon their
privacy, Umberto Eco seems to kind of enjoy giving interviews considering the spirited manner in which he answers the
questions put forth to him by the interviewer, Mukund Padmanabhan. Eco readily and truthfully answers all the
questions in the most humble and sincere manner, delving into details, thus revealing the fact that he actually does not
mind sharing his experiences with others.
(v) In the story "Deep Water" by William Douglas, he decided to go to the YMCA pool to learn to swim because it was
considered safer compared to the Yakima River, which was known to be treacherous and had claimed many lives. The
YMCA pool was shallow at the beginning, making it an ideal place for beginners. Douglas believed it would be a good
and safe environment for him to overcome his fear of water and learn to swim with confidence.

11. Answer any two of following three question in 40 to 50 words each.
(i) The Maharaja wanted to be extremely careful while dealing with the hundredth tiger which was supposed to be the
reason for his death. On encountering the hundredth one, he took a careful aim at the tiger and shot it. When it fell in a
crumpled heap, he was overcome with joy and left the place hastily.
(ii) Dr. Sadao was not sent to war along with the troops because he was attending to General Takima, who had suffered
several heart attacks. The general did not believe in any other doctors because they were trained by Germans and in his
opinion, Germans were ruthless. Also, Dr. Sadao was exceptional in terms of his medical knowledge and was the only
'eligible' enough to operate the general.
(iii)Derry experienced a profound sense of self-doubt and isolation due to his physical handicap and disfigured face. He
found it challenging to be in the presence of others as they constantly served as a reminder of his perceived
unattractiveness. Consequently, he chose to distance himself from social interactions, believing that his appearance
rendered him unworthy of affection and acceptance. Thus, he adopted a reclusive lifestyle.
12. Answer any ONE of following TWO question in 120to 150 words each.
(i) Mukesh dared to dream of a different life and decided not to pursue his family business of bangle making. This was
because he no longer wanted to live life in abject poverty. He not only was aware about the condition of his family but
also observed the miseries around him. So, he decided not to accept his life of misery in the name of destiny. He dreamt
of a better future despite the fact that he was born in a poverty-ridden family in the caste of bangle makers. He wanted to
break free from the vicious circle of sahukars and middlemen and carve a new beginning for himself by becoming a
motor mechanic. He knew that the chances of his success were bleak, but he also knew what it was like to work in glass
furnaces that were neither well-lit nor well-ventilated. They were dingy places with high temperatures. He had seen
5/6
.
poverty, miserable health conditions, and a life without any amenities, not even the basic ones. He had observed that the
youngsters were weighed down by the pressure of their parents to follow the family business and had forgotten to dream
of an alternative world. So Mukesh's dream of going to a garage and learning to be a motor-mechanic was an attempt to
break free from the mind-numbing toil.
(ii) The poet smiles as she bids farewell to her mother and assures her that they would meet again. As she looks at her
mother, who looks pale and weak due to old age, her heart is pained to think that her mother might not live long. She
smiles, but her smile is only an effort to cover up the hidden fear and pain in her heart. It is a smile put on deliberately to
hide her tears.
Her situation is quite ironical. Though she tells her mother that she'll see her soon, she doubts if she will ever see her
alive again. The repetition of the word 'smile' shows that it is a long and cheerful one. The smile is also significant
because it must have comforted both the mother and the daughter and kindled in them the hope that the mother would
survive long enough for the two to meet again.
13. Answer any ONE of following TWO question in 120to 150 words each.
(i) I have no apprehensions regarding the humanistic and professional traits of Dr. Sadao but I was distraught at his decision
of saving the American soldier. It was so because being the caretaker of their children I was very much attached to them
and what exactly worried me was the thought of what would happen to the children if their father was found out as a
“traitor.” I regard Sadao as an excellent surgeon and a human being but I will always bear this grievance against him.
That day not only I but the gardener and other staff too stood against our master’s shocking empathy for the enemy. I
had no qualms in expressing my prejudice against the American prisoner through my refusal in following my master's
order of washing the prisoner. Even Hana's words couldn't convince me. We warned Sadao and Hana that they were
taking a bad risk. When they did not pay any heed to our suggestion then we all left their place telling them that we
would not stay any longer if the American prisoner lived there. Although I had to take this decision reluctantly because I
was very attached to the kids.
Later when we rejoined our duties at Sadao’s house I used Sulphur to disinfect the room used by the American.
(ii) I still cherish the stroll from school to home that I enjoyed during my childhood. My home was hardly a ten-minute walk
from my school. But it used to take almost half an hour for me to reach my home because I was riveted by all the fun
and games in the streets. I used to see new or sometimes strange things happening there, and then there were the shops
and the bazaar that I loved to see. Sometimes there would be a performing monkey or a snake charmer. Other times there
would be the cyclist who had not got off his bike for three days. There were the spinning wheels. The Maariyaata temple
was a great attraction. There used to be all sorts of shops and stalls. There used to be a hunter gypsy with a lemur in a
cage, and people selling needles, clay pots, and instruments for cleaning ears. There used to be some political party
arranging mikes. At times there I got to see a puppet or a magic show. There used to be coffee clubs in the bazaar. Some
people could be seen sitting in front of the shops, chopping onions. Then, according to the season, there used to be
people selling fruits, sweets, tasty fried snacks, payasam, halwa, boiled tamarind seeds, and iced lollies.
