To what extent has tourism positively contributed to your country’s economy?

Nepal is a country located within the folds of the Himalayas. Many tourists from around
the world visit to enjoy the breathtaking view of the alluring landscapes and examine the
natural and cultural heritage. Tourism has been the cornerstone of the nation’s
economy, generating annual revenue. Although there are some challenges to be faced
by the tourism industry, it has surely succeeded in catching the interest of foreigners
and contributing to the national economy in a great way.

Tourism directly injects foreign currency into the national economy. As tourists spend
money on accommodation, food, transportation, etc. in sectors like hotels, restaurants,
and small-scale industries, the money arrives at the government as a revenue that can
be used in the economic growth of the nation. Nepal’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is
contributed mostly by the income gained from tourism. In 2023, the World Travel and
Tourism Council estimated the contribution of tourism to Nepal’s GDP at approximately
8.6 percent.

At the same time, tourism plays a role in generating employment opportunities in Nepal.
Unemployment being a major problem, the country suffers a huge brain drain every year
which restricts development in the nation. However, to some extent, tourism has solved
this problem by providing job opportunities to youth in the country itself. Hotel and
accommodation staff, tour guides, trekking and Mountaineering guides, porters, event
organizers, photographers, security personnel, domestic and international airline staff,
etc. are some clear examples of jobs created by the tourism industry. Also, many
tourists visit Nepal to get involved in adventurous activities such as mountain climbing,
white water rafting, etc. To conduct these activities, manpower is needed.

Moreover, The demand for tourism services catalyzes investments in the development
of infrastructure. As more foreigners visit Nepal, the demand for infrastructural
development increases which can benefit the tourists as well as residents. The
government has proposed twenty-two National Pride Projects up to the present time,
among which many are to improve transportation and communication facilities in the
country. This also contributes to the development of sectors like education and health
in the rural parts of the country.

Nonetheless, Tourism in Nepal serves as a bridge connecting diverse cultures.

Possessing a hundred and twenty-five ethnic groups and a hundred and twenty-three
spoken languages, tourists arrive in Nepal to study about them. They are also here to
view and analyze the cultural heritages. All of these are the national pride of Nepal and
they are the identity of the country. So, having more tourists visiting Nepal will increase
its publicity around the world and this will surely contribute to the economic growth of
the nation.

Nepal holds immense potential in the development of the tourism sector.

The comeliness of nature and the diversity in culture situated here attracts thousands of
tourists every year. Despite some challenges, Nepal’s tourism industry remains resilient.
Hence Nepal should overcome its existing problems and challenges to strengthen the
tourism industry which will lead to a better economic contribution to the nation.
