Free fall
Introduction

Gravity the universal force of The gravitational force is

attraction acting between all proportional to the mass of the
bodies of matter. It is what objects and inversely

ground.
Formula:

● Newton’s Law of Universal Gravitation:

Gravity on Earth
Earth's Gravitational Acceleration:

● Near the Earth's surface, gravity causes

objects to accelerate at approximately
9.8 m/s2
○ This acceleration is uniform for all
objects, regardless of their mass
(ignoring air resistance).
○ Example: If you drop a feather and a
ball in a vacuum, they will fall at the
same rate.
What is free fall
Free fall occurs when the only
force acting on an object is
gravity. Conditions for Free Fall:

● There is no air resistance ● In vacuum environments like

or any other force space.
opposing gravity during ● On Earth, it can be closely
true free fall. approximated by dropping
objects from a small height
in controlled environments.
Equation of free fall
Air resistance

Air resistance is the force acting on an object

that is moving through air flowing in the
opposite direction. The air “resists” the object's
movement, slowing it down by friction that is
created as the object collides with air
molecules.
Newton’s laws

● Newton’s First Law:

○ An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon
by a force (inertia).
● Newton’s Second Law:
○ Force is equal to mass times acceleration (F=ma).
○ Gravity acts as this force, making objects accelerate.
● Newton’s Third Law:
○ For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction
(though in free fall, air resistance or the ground provides
this reaction force).
Summary

● Gravity is a fundamental force that causes objects

to fall toward Earth.
● Free fall describes motion under the influence of
gravity alone.
● Real-world applications, like skydiving, demonstrate
these concepts in action.
