8. Replace the three force and single couple acting on the bent pipe by a single equivalent force R
at point o . Specify the distance x from point O on the the x-axis through which the line of action
of R passes. The angle which 15kN make with the positive X– axis is 300 .

THREE- DIMENSIONAL FORCE SYSTEM

9. The light right angle – boom which supports the 400-kg cylinder is supported by three cables
and a joint at O attached to the vertical x-y surface. If the tension in cable BD (TBD) is 2770 N,
determine:

i. The scalar components of TBD

ii. The projection of TBD on BE
iii. The moment about point O due to TBD
iv. The resultant R in terms of vector (if TAC = 4810N, TBE= 654N. In addition to
TBD, consider the weight of the cylinder)

10.Three cables are attached to a bracket as shown. Replace the forces exerted by the cables with an
equivalent force-couple system at A and Determine the magnitude and point of application of the
resultant R. (Ans: R = 1607 i + 439j – 507k N, MA = 30i +17.68j + 118.9k N.m & (x,y,z) = ….)

12. Determine whether the force-and-couple system shown can be reduced to a single equivalent
force R. If it can, determine R and the point where the line of action of R intersects the yz plane.
If it cannot be so reduced, replace the given system with an equivalent wrench and determine its
resultant, and the point where its axis intersects the yz plane.
Ans : R = (20.0 N) i + (30.0 N) j - (10.00 N) k ;
y = - 0.540 m, z = - 0.420 m.
