Objective:
This SOP outlines the safe and efficient procedures for loading and unloading goods on and off
vehicles to ensure minimal damage, prevent injury, and ensure compliance with safety
regulations.
Scope:
This SOP applies to all personnel involved in the loading and unloading of goods at the
warehouse, storage areas, or during transportation. It covers trucks, trailers, and other vehicles
used for transportation.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): All personnel must wear appropriate PPE,
including safety boots, high-visibility vests, gloves, and hard hats.
Training: Only trained personnel should be involved in loading and unloading
operations.
Equipment Inspection: Inspect forklifts, pallet jacks, trolleys, or any equipment used for
loading and unloading to ensure they are in good working condition.
Clear Pathway: Ensure the loading/unloading area is clear of obstacles, wet spots, or any
hazards.
First Aid: Ensure first aid kits are available and employees know where they are located.
Weather Conditions: Avoid loading/unloading in severe weather conditions such as
heavy rain, snow, or high winds.
Verify Orders: Ensure that the correct goods are to be loaded/unloaded as per the
manifest, packing list, or delivery note.
Vehicle Positioning:
o For loading, ensure the vehicle is positioned at the dock or loading area with
brakes applied.
o For unloading, ensure the vehicle is parked securely with the engine turned off,
and the handbrake applied.
Signage: Place appropriate signage, such as "Loading/Unloading in Progress" to notify
other personnel of the activity.

Check for Weight Limits: Ensure that the weight capacity of the vehicle and loading
equipment is not exceeded.
3. Loading Process
Check for Proper Securing: Make sure items are properly secured to prevent shifting
during transport. This can involve using straps, ropes, or load bars.
Start with Heavy Items: Load heavier items first, placing them closest to the vehicle’s
center of gravity.
Stacking: If stacking goods, ensure they are stacked securely and evenly to prevent any
shifting or collapse during transportation.
Balance the Load: Distribute weight evenly across the vehicle’s cargo area to maintain
vehicle stability.
Use Equipment: Use forklifts, pallet jacks, or manual handling equipment to move
items. Manual lifting should be done using safe lifting techniques (e.g., bend at the knees,
not the waist).
Check for Spillage or Leakage: For liquids or perishable goods, check for any spillage
or leakage before loading.
4. Unloading Process
Confirm Inventory: Verify the number and type of items to be unloaded against the
shipping manifest or order.
Unload from Rear to Front: Begin unloading from the rear of the vehicle, ensuring the
first item is removed first to prevent damage to other items.
Use Equipment Safely: Use forklifts, hoists, or other appropriate tools to unload heavy
or bulky items. Do not manually lift heavy loads unless necessary.
Handling Fragile Items: For fragile items, handle with extra care and use padding or
cushioning where necessary to prevent damage.
Check for Damage: Inspect goods as they are unloaded for any visible damage or
discrepancies. Document any damage immediately and inform the appropriate personnel.
Maintain Cleanliness: Ensure the unloading area remains clean and tidy. Immediately
remove any waste packaging or debris.
5. Post-Loading/Unloading Activities
Inspect the Vehicle: After unloading, inspect the vehicle for any damage, cleanliness,
and potential issues.
Return Equipment: Return all equipment (e.g., pallet jacks, forklifts) to their proper
storage locations after use.
Documentation: Ensure that the loading/unloading has been properly documented in the
system, including any discrepancies or damages.
Secure the Vehicle: Before the vehicle departs, make sure the load is fully secured, and
the vehicle is safe for transport.
6. Emergency Procedures
7. Responsibilities
Supervisor: Ensure all safety protocols are being followed, conduct regular inspections,
and ensure staff are trained.
Loader/Unloader: Follow all safety procedures, report any issues or accidents, and
ensure the goods are handled appropriately.
Driver: Ensure the vehicle is in good condition, secure the load after loading, and
communicate any potential issues to the supervisor.
8. Conclusion
The loading and unloading process should always prioritize safety, efficiency, and minimizing
damage to goods. Regular training and adherence to this SOP will ensure that operations are
carried out smoothly and in compliance with workplace safety regulations.
