ABOUT THE HOSPITAL
Desh Bhagat Hospital is a multi-specialty hospital located within the campus of Desh
Bhagat University in Punjab, India. The hospital offers a range of medical services,
including emergency care, diagnostic testing, and treatment for various health
conditions ¹. With a focus on providing high-quality patient care, the hospital is
equipped with modern facilities and staffed by experienced healthcare professionals.
As part of Desh Bhagat University, the hospital also plays a key role in the education
and training of medical students, offering them hands-on experience in a real-world
healthcare setting.
HOSPITAL RECEPTION
A hospital reception serves as the first point of contact for patients, visitors, and staff. It's a bustling
hub where information is exchanged, appointments are scheduled, and initial inquiries are
addressed.
Receptionists, often the face of the hospital, play a crucial role in creating a welcoming and efficient
environment. They handle administrative tasks like patient registration, appointment scheduling,
and billing. Additionally, they provide essential information, guide visitors to the appropriate
departments, and assist in emergency situations.
A well-organized reception area contributes to a positive patient experience, reducing wait times
and minimizing confusion. By maintaining a professional and compassionate demeanor,
receptionists can help alleviate stress and anxiety, fostering a positive atmosphere within the
hospital.
EMERGENCY WARD
The Emergency Department (ED) is a critical care unit that provides immediate medical attention
to patients who require urgent care. The ED is a fast-paced, dynamic environment that operates
24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Objectives
1. Provide immediate medical attention: To provide prompt and effective medical care to
patients who present with acute illnesses or injuries.
2. Stabilize and triage patients: To stabilize patients who are critically ill or injured and
triage them for further treatment.
3. Diagnose and treat emergency conditions: To diagnose and treat emergency medical
conditions, such as heart attacks, strokes, and trauma.
Services Provided:
1. Emergency medical care: Treatment for acute illnesses and injuries, such as chest pain,
difficulty breathing, and severe trauma.
2. Urgent care: Treatment for non-life-threatening conditions, such as minor injuries, colds,
and flu.
3. Diagnostic testing: Access to diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, CT scans, and laboratory
tests.
OPD (Outpatient Department) is a crucial part of a hospital where patients receive diagnosis,
consultation, and treatment without requiring overnight hospitalization.
It serves as the primary point of contact between patients and healthcare providers. The Role of
Pharmacy in OPD:
Over-the-Counter (OTC) Medications: They provide advice and dispense OTC medications for
minor ailments.
Drug Information:
Medication Counseling: Pharmacists educate patients about their medications, including dosage,
side effects, and interactions.
Provider Consultation: They provide drug information and advice to OPD physicians, helping
them make informed prescribing decisions.
Disease State Management: They provide specialized care for patients with chronic conditions,
such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma.
Vaccine Administration:
Pharmacists administer vaccines to OPD patients as per immunization schedules and guidelines.
By working closely with OPD physicians and other healthcare providers, pharmacists contribute
to improving patient outcomes, reducing medication errors, and enhancing overall healthcare
delivery.
OPERATION THEATRE
Operation theaters are specialized rooms within hospitals where surgical procedures are performed.
These sterile environments require a high level of precision and meticulous attention to detail.
Anesthesia: Pharmacists prepare and dispense anesthetic drugs, ensuring accurate dosages and
minimizing risks.
Pre-Operative Medications: They prepare and dispense medications to sedate patients or control
anxiety.
Sterile Compounding: They prepare sterile solutions and intravenous medications for
administration during surgery.
Post-Operative Medication Management:
Pain Management: Pharmacists help manage post-operative pain by preparing and dispensing
appropriate medications.
Aseptic Techniques:
Strict Adherence: Pharmacists follow strict aseptic techniques to maintain sterility and prevent
contamination of medications and surgical equipment.
DISPENSING OF DRUGS
Drug dispensing is a crucial process in pharmacy, involving the accurate preparation and delivery
of medications to patients. It begins with receiving a prescription, which is carefully reviewed by
a pharmacist to ensure clarity and accuracy. The pharmacist then selects the appropriate
medications, considering factors like dosage, strength, and quantity.
Next, the pharmacist prepares the medication, which may involve counting pills, measuring
liquids, or compounding specific formulations. The medication is then placed in a suitable
container and labeled with essential information, including the patient's name, prescription
number, medication name, strength, dosage, and administration instructions.
Before dispensing, the pharmacist conducts a final check to verify the accuracy of the medication
and label.
They may also provide patient counseling, explaining the medication's purpose, dosage, side
effects, and potential interactions with other drugs. The pharmacist then hands the medication to
the patient or caregiver, ensuring they understand how to use it correctly.
Throughout the dispensing process, pharmacists prioritize patient safety and adhere to strict
quality control measures. They maintain accurate records of dispensed medications and may also
provide additional services, such as medication therapy management or adherence counseling.
X-RAY
X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation used in hospitals for diagnostic imaging. They
penetrate the body to varying degrees, creating images of internal structures like bones and organs.
This allows doctors to diagnose fractures, infections, and diseases. Common applications include
chest X-rays to detect lung conditions, dental X-rays for tooth health, and mammograms for breast
cancer screening. X-rays are quick, non-invasive, and crucial for guiding treatment decisions. With
advances in technology, digital X-rays provide clearer images and reduce radiation exposure,
enhancing patient safety and diagnostic accuracy
FIRST AID
First aid is the immediate care given to a person who has been injured or suddenly taken ill. It
involves basic medical care to stabilize a casualty's condition until definitive medical care can be
provided. Pharmacists, with their knowledge of medications and medical conditions, play a crucial
role in first aid.
Pharmacists can provide essential information on how to use over-the-counter medications for
common injuries like cuts, burns, and sprains. They can also advise on the appropriate dosage and
duration of treatment. Additionally, pharmacists can help identify potential drug interactions and
side effects, ensuring safe and effective use of medications during first aid situations.
By educating the public on first aid principles and providing access to essential medications,
pharmacists contribute to improving public health and safety. They empower individuals to
respond effectively to emergencies, potentially saving lives and minimizing the impact of injuries
and illnesses.
Uses of First Aid
First aid is a crucial skill that can be applied in various situations to save lives and prevent further
injury. Here are some of its key uses:
Treating Minor Injuries: Addressing cuts, scrapes, burns, and sprains with appropriate cleaning,
dressing, and medication.
Managing Severe Bleeding: Controlling bleeding by applying direct pressure and using pressure
bandages.
Responding to Choking: Performing the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge objects from the airway.
Addressing Heatstroke and Heat Exhaustion: Providing immediate cooling measures and
rehydration.
Managing Hypothermia: Warming the body gradually and preventing further heat loss.
Maintaining Airway, Breathing, and Circulation (ABCs): Ensuring that the victim can breathe and
their heart is functioning.
Preventing Shock: Elevating the legs and keeping the victim warm.
Promoting Recovery
Preventing Infection: Cleaning wounds and applying antiseptic to reduce the risk of infection.
By understanding and applying basic first aid principles, individuals can respond effectively to
emergencies and significantly improve the outcomes of accidents and illnesses.
