INTRODUCTION

One of the crucial issues in the construction industry is motivation at workplace. By adopting
relevant motivation theories, execute small research on workplace motivation that would
improve construction professionals’ productivity and efficiency. To meet the purpose of the
research, carry out interview with construction professionals (i.e., engineer, architect,
interior designer, etc) to determine motivation variables. In addition to that, motivation
variables from human resources personnel are in need, to sync the variables collected
earlier. Each interview shall not last more than one hour. You must record and transcribe
each interview using Google Docs voice dictation or other method that you find suitable.
Transcripts must be analysed using thematic narrative analysis. At the end of the project,
proposed motivation framework for construction professionals. In a group of 4 people,
execute group project and assignment.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

Aim
Aim of the project is to recommend motivation variables among construction
professionals. Kindly fulfill the aim of the project by completing four objectives as
follow:

Objectives:
Objective 1: To identify motivation variables among construction professionals in
different position

Objective 2: To explore variables used by construction organisation through its


human resources division to boost construction professionals’ motivation
Objective 3: To examine motivation variables among construction professionals
Objective 4: To propose recommendation (framework) of motivation for construction
professionals

TASK ALLOCATION

Task 1: Group Project (20%)


• Data collection – carry out interview session with construction professionals by
utilize the following interview questions.

i) Objective 1: To identify motivation variables among construction professional


in different position
1. Introduce yourself (position, years of service with current company)
2. Have you experience resignation? If yes, what are the contributing factors
to this situation?
3. What is/are your expectation from your employer that influence your level
of motivation at workplace? How this situation affects your motivation
level?

ii) Objective 2: To explore variables used by construction organisation through


its human resources division to boost construction professionals’ motivation.
1. Based on your experience, what were the challenges in dealing with
construction professionals especially the professional (i.e. engineer,
architect, quantity surveyor, etc)
2. Can you elaborate indicator of demotivated / problematic employees
3. What are employment packages (terms and conditions in employment
contract) which related to motivation factors such as bonus, increment,
career path.
4. In your opinion, what factors contributing to motivation at work for
construction professionals. And why?

• Data analysis
i) To fulfill objective 3: By adopting thematic analysis, carry out individual
motivation variables among construction professionals and variables
from human resources personnel’s perspective. The followings are
proposed theme that might be included in your analysis: family matters,
recognition, work-life balance, career path. Each theme might have sub-
theme where you may arrange it into it suitable theme. You may propose
your own theme / sub-theme based on your analysis. There is no right or
wrong answer as the data is rich in information and based on your
understanding. Kindly utilize it accordingly.

ii) To fulfill objective 3: Execute group thematic analysis by combining all


individual motivation variables. Produce group thematic analysis for your
group. Kindly re-analyze theme and its data.
iii) To fulfill objective 4: Proposed framework for construction professionals’
motivation variables. You may propose either in narrative form,
framework type or any types that best suits your data.

Task 2: Group Assignment (30%)

Students must demonstrate understanding of self-learnt topics by submitting a


written report on the data gathered during the class group project. The report must
be no more than 20 pages long, with 1.5 spacing and using Arial 11. The suggested
contents are as follows. Please limit your readings and include citations/references
for each sentence.
