Topic: Tag Question

*What is Tag Question?

- tag questions are short question we use at the end of the statement to ask if we are correct or to ask
for agreement.
- Example: You haven’t been here before , have you?

*Rules of Tag Question:

If the main sentence is positive, the question tag is negative, if the statement is negative the question
tag is positive.
Example: "She can swim, can't she?" (Positive statement, negative tag)
"You don't like coffee, do you?" (Negative statement, positive tag)

*If you are making a negative statement and want to check that if it’s true, you use a positive question
tag.
- Example: You didn’t ask her about school, did you?
She shouldn’ve had her exam results by now, shouldn’t she?

*Take the same verb as the main verb in the statement they are attached to,as in the example above. If
the statement does not include an auxiliary verb, a modal verb or be as a main verb, you use do, does
or did in the question tag.
- Example: You think purple’s a bad color for a car, don’t you?
She hates me, doesn’t she?

*You can use question tags to show your reaction to what someone has said.
for example, you can show interest, surprise, doubt, or anger. in this case, you use a positive statement
and positive tags.
-Example: Oh, you think I’m stupid,do you?
A. I’ve used all the shampoo.
B. Oh, you have, have you? I’ll have to buy some more now.

*When you use an imperative, you can be more polite by using will you, would you or won’t you.
- Example: Be quiet, will you? I’m trying to concentrate.
Tidy your room now, would you?
Make me a cup of tea, won’t you?

*When you use a negative imperative, you only use “will you“.
- Example: Don’t tell Chris what I said, will you?

*You can also use “will you” and “won’t you” to emphasize anger or impatience.
- Example: Hurry up, will you? We’re already half an hour late.
Shut up, won’t you? I’m sick of hearing your voice.

*You can use shall we to make a suggestion using let’s.

- Example: let’s start again, shall we?

*You can use the question tag shall I after I’ll.

- Example: I’ll let you know if I’m going to sue’s later, shall I?
