Design of Eccentrically Loaded Riveted Joint
OBJECTIVE: To design the rivet for bracket is attached to a vertical column by means of
six identical rivets as shown in Fig. It is subjected to an eccentric force of 60 kN at a distance
of 200 mm from the centre of the column. The maximum permissible shear stress for the rivets
is 150 N/mm2.

THEORY:
In many applications, a machine member is subjected to load such that a bending moment is
developed in addition to direct normal or shear loading. Such type of loading is commonly
known as eccentric loading. In this lesson design methodology will be discussed for riveted
joints subjected to eccentric loading.

The bracket, in this case, is connected to the wall by four rivets as shown in figure. The force,
in addition to inducing direct shear of magnitude 4F in each rivet, causes the whole assembly
to rotate. Hence additional shear forces appear in the rivets. Once again, the problem is a
statically indeterminate one and additional assumptions are required. These are as following:
1. Magnitude of additional shear force is proportional to the distance between the rivet
centre and the centroid of the rivet assembly, whose co-ordinates are defined as
2. Direction of the force is perpendicular to the line joining centroid of the rivet group
and the rivet centre and the sense is governed by the rotation of the bracket.

Noting that for identical rivets the centroid is the geometric centre of the rectangle, the force in
the ith rivet is
fi α li
fi = ali
Where a = proportional constant and li =distance of the ith rivet from centroid.

Taking moment about the centroid

Σ fi li = FL
or a= FL / Σ li2
Thus the additional force is

fi = FL li/ Σ li2
The net force in the ith rivet is obtained by parallelogram law of vector addition as

where θi =angle between the lines of action of the forces shown in the figure.
For safe designing we must have

= max (fi / A) <= ss

where ss = allowable shear stress of the rivet.

Using the above criterion calculate the appropriate dimension of rivet and then choose
standardize size.

DESIGN PROCEDURE:
1. Find the centroid of given rivet system.
2. Calculate direct shear load on each rivet.
3. Calculate secondary shear load on each rivet.
4. Calculate resultant load on those rivets which are critically loaded.
5. Calculate the diameter of rivet.
6. Standardize the diameter to get proper dimension (refer design data handbook)
7. Propose the suitable material and proper head of the rivet.
8. Check for failure of joint on different parameters such as crushing, & tearing etc.

RESULT:
Required diameter of rivet is:

CONCLUSION:
On the basis of check for strength, tearing and crushing etc. safety of design is to be stated.
