is my way of getting to know the
different species that make up our
world. It is exciting! I also like
making abstract designs, but I

Did you know…?
Some Features of Paper: Weight
Weight is an indirect measure of the thickness of the paper.
Although there is a correlation between weight and thickness, it
also depends on the density, so you cannot simply go by the
weight.

Weights of paper suitable for origami range from 20 to 180g/m2,

that is to say, from tissue paper to thin cardstock. The thickness is
so important that often authors recommend a specific thickness for their models; this is due to
the fact that it is a limiting factor, there are some models that it’s simply not possible to fold
from paper over a certain thickness.

The evolution of origami has led to the existence of models that

require very thin papers but with high strength, like tissue foil,
which is suitable for some models but not for others; but the
general trend is towards folding from as thin paper as possible.

The problem of thickness becomes

evident when we have accumulated a
large number of layers and they become more difficult to fold; on
the other hand, if the paper is very thin it makes it more difficult
to handle, it wrinkles easily and lacks “body”, so that the models
can end up very well folded but without consistency.

A good thickness is evident in the finished figure; especially in the edges, looking rounded and
gentle rather than cold and sharp.
