Machine Design Practice-I

Sessional Work I: Material Selection

1 What are the factors to be considered for the selection of materials for the design of machine
element? Discuss
2 Enumerate most commonly used engineering material and state at least one important property
and one application of each.
3. Write the objective and outcome of subject “Design of machine elements”
4. Define plain carbon steel. How it is designated according to Indian Standards.
5. Write the advantage of Cast iron as an engineering material.
6 Write the mechanical properties of the material used in the design of parts.
7 State difference between static and dynamic loading.

Sessional Work II: Fit and Tolerance

1 What are fits and tolerances? How are they designated?
2 Write short notes on the following : (a) Interchangeability; (b) Tolerance; (c) Allowance; and
(d) Fits.
3 What is meant by ‘hole basis system’ and ‘shaft basis system’?
4 The dimensions of the mating parts, according to basic hole system, are given as follows :
Hole : 25.00 mm and 25.02 mm , Shaft : 24.97 mm and 24.95 mm

Find the hole tolerance, shaft tolerance and allowance

Sessional Work III: Knuckle and Cotter Joint

1 Design a gib and cotter joint to resist safely a tensile load of 40kN. The material of gib, cotter
and rods is same for which the allowable safe stress are:
𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑚𝑎 𝑐 = 60 N/𝑚𝑚2 : 𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑚𝑎 𝑡 =25 N/𝑚𝑚2 : 𝑠𝑖𝑔𝑚𝑎 𝑡 = 20 N/𝑚𝑚2
2 Design a knuckle joint to transmit 150 kN. The design stresses may be taken as 75 MPa in
tension, 60 MPa in shear and 150 MPa in compression.
3 How a cotter joint is made. Discuss the application of a cotter joint.

Sessional Work IV: Key Joint and Shaft Coupling

1 Design a muff coupling which is used to connect two steels shafts transmitting 40 kW at 350 rpm.
The material for the shafts and key is plain carbon steel for which allowable shear and crushing
stresses may be taken as 40 MPa and 80 MPa respectively. The material for the muff is cast iron
for which the allowable shear stress may be assumed as 15 MPa.
2 What is the effect of Keyways cut into the shafts?
3 List the requirement of good shaft coupling.
4 Write the expression of stresses induced in Keneddy Key.
