3 Week 3 (June 10, 2024 - June 14, 2024)

During the third week of my attachment at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, I focused on community

health initiatives and further developed my understanding of patient care practices. Here are the

activities I engaged in:

Participating in Community Outreach Programs

At the beginning of the week, I took part in a community outreach program organized by the

hospital. This initiative aimed to promote awareness of maternal and child health services

available at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. I helped set up the event, which included health

screenings and educational sessions for community members. This experience highlighted the

importance of proactive health education and community engagement in improving health

outcomes.

Assisting in Health Education Sessions

Throughout the week, I assisted healthcare professionals in conducting health education sessions

for expectant mothers and caregivers. I learned about key topics such as prenatal care, nutrition

during pregnancy, and the importance of immunizations for children. Engaging with the

community allowed me to understand their health concerns and the barriers they face in

accessing healthcare services.

Shadowing Midwives in the Maternity Ward

I spent time in the maternity ward, shadowing midwives as they provided care to expectant

mothers. I observed the processes involved in prenatal check-ups, labor, and postnatal care. This
experience deepened my understanding of maternal health and the critical role midwives play in

ensuring safe deliveries and supporting new mothers.

Learning about Child Health Services

I also engaged with the pediatric department, where I learned about the various services offered

for children, including immunizations and growth monitoring. I assisted in weighing and

measuring children during routine check-ups, which helped me appreciate the importance of

early detection and intervention in pediatric care.

Participating in Case Discussions

On Thursday, I attended case discussions led by healthcare professionals in the maternity and

pediatric departments. These discussions focused on complex cases and the collaborative

approach required to address various health challenges. I learned about the importance of

teamwork and communication in providing comprehensive care to patients.

Engaging in Data Collection for Health Surveys

Towards the end of the week, I participated in data collection for a health survey aimed at

assessing community health needs. I assisted in administering questionnaires to community

members, gathering valuable information on their health status and access to healthcare services.

This experience emphasized the role of data in informing health policies and programs.

Reflecting on the Week's Experiences

On Friday, I took time to reflect on the experiences of the week, discussing my observations and

insights with my supervisor. This reflection helped me identify areas for personal growth and

development in my understanding of community health and social work practices.
