5 Week 5 (June 24, 2024 - June 28, 2024)

During the fifth week of my attachment at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, I focused on enhancing

my understanding of patient care in specialized departments, particularly in the areas of maternal

and child health, as well as chronic disease management. Here are the activities I engaged in:

Shadowing in the Maternity Ward

At the beginning of the week, I spent significant time in the maternity ward, shadowing

midwives and obstetricians. I observed prenatal check-ups, labor and delivery processes, and

postnatal care. This experience provided me with insights into the importance of maternal health

services and the role of healthcare providers in ensuring safe deliveries and supporting new

mothers.

Participating in Antenatal Clinics

I assisted in the antenatal clinics, where I learned about the various assessments conducted for

expectant mothers. I helped in measuring blood pressure, checking fetal heart rates, and

documenting patient information. Engaging with mothers-to-be allowed me to understand their

concerns and the importance of regular prenatal visits.

Learning About Family Planning Services

On Wednesday, I participated in family planning counseling sessions. I learned about the

different contraceptive options available and the significance of informed choice in family

planning. I assisted healthcare professionals in providing information to patients, addressing their

questions, and ensuring they understood their options.

Engaging in Pediatric Care

I spent time in the pediatric department, where I observed the management of various childhood

illnesses and routine immunizations. I assisted in weighing and measuring children during their

check-ups and learned about the importance of early detection and intervention in pediatric care.

Participating in Chronic Disease Management

Towards the end of the week, I engaged with the chronic disease management team, focusing on

conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. I observed patient education sessions where

healthcare providers discussed lifestyle modifications, medication adherence, and regular

monitoring. This experience emphasized the importance of patient education in managing

chronic diseases effectively.

Assisting in Health Education Workshops

On Friday, I participated in health education workshops aimed at raising awareness about

maternal and child health issues in the community. I helped prepare educational materials and

assisted in facilitating discussions with community members. This outreach effort highlighted the

hospital's commitment to promoting health education and preventive care.

Reflecting on the Week's Experiences

At the end of the week, I took time to reflect on my experiences and discuss my observations

with my supervisor. This reflection helped me consolidate my learning and identify areas for

further development in my understanding of maternal and child health services.
