Chapter 3: Echoes in the Woods

The next day, Eira returned to the woods, heart pounding with every step. The
shadows felt thicker than usual, as if something unseen was crowding in on her.
Her fingers brushed the bark of an old cedar, its rough surface grounding her,
but she could not shake the feeling of being watched.
Her breath clouded the air in front of her as she moved, slow and deliberate.
Birds chirped high in the branches, but their songs were sharp, as if warning one
another. She scanned the trees for signs of the cloaked figure but found none.
Then, she heard it—a sound that did not belong. A soft hum, low and constant,
like the distant thrum of a beehive. It pulsed in the air, coming from the direction
where the stranger had vanished the day before.
Her legs felt like stone, unwilling to move. Her mind urged her to flee, but her
feet betrayed her, one step forward, then another. The hum grew louder. She
turned a corner in the trail and stopped short.
In the hollow of an old oak, she saw it—a shimmer in the air, like heat rising from
a summer road. The Veil. She’d heard her grandmother speak of it but had never
seen it herself.
Her breath caught in her chest. It was beautiful and terrible all at once, a living
ripple in the world that should not be. And from within it, something moved.
