BASIC SKETCHING ALSO KNOWN AS
QUICK, FREEHAND DRAWING,
USUALLY NOT INTENDED AS A
FINISHED WORK, IS SOMETIMES
CALLED A SKETCH.
Tools used in
basic sketching
Graphite pencils come
in various hardness
levels (e.g., H for hard,
B for soft) and are
used for different
shading effects.
Kneaded erasers are flexible
and can lift graphite to create
highlights, while rubber
erasers are used for correcting
mistakes and cleaning up
sketches.
Bond paper is smooth and
suitable for practice sketches,
while sketchbook paper is
thicker and textured, allowing
for various sketching
techniques.
Blending stumps or
tortillons are tools used
to smooth and blend
pencil marks, creating
gradient effects and
soft transitions.
Rulers provide straight lines
and accurate measurements,
essential for creating precise
geometric shapes and
structures.
Compasses are used to
draw precise circles and
arcs. They are essential
for creating symmetrical
designs and geometric
shapes.
Types of basic
pencil shading
techniques
Hatching is when the lines all go
the same way, cross hatching
when they go in 2 or more
opposite directions.
A drawing technique in which areas of light
and shadow are created using nothing but
dots. The basic idea is simple: For darker
areas, you apply a greater number of dots and
keep them close together. Then for
progressively lighter areas, use fewer dots
and space them farther apart.
The easiest way to create shading is
to just build up darker tones with
random motions until you get the
desired look. This can also be the
quickest way to get shading done,
due to its loose and quick motion.
It is a shading technique that uses
small circles to create darker areas on a
drawing. This is done by placing a series
of small circles close together on the
paper. The closer the circles are, the
darker the shading will be.
Using small circular motion to cover the
entire area of your shading, as well as a
consistent pressure, will result in a
smooth, even tone. It takes slightly more
time than rushed, back and forth motion,
but it's so worth it. There may be areas
that are very small and don't allow
circular motion.
