The Unitary Method

What is the Unitary Method?

The unitary method is a way of solving problems by first finding the value of one unit and then using that to find the value of many units.

In simple terms, it's about finding how much 1 unit costs or is worth, and then multiplying or dividing that by the required number of units.

Steps to Solve Using the Unitary Method:

1. Find the value of 1 unit:

This means you divide the total value by the number of units to get the value of just one unit.
2. Multiply the value of 1 unit by the required number of units.

Example 1: Finding the Cost of One Item

Let’s say you want to buy 5 books, and the total cost is $30.
You want to know how much one book costs.

1. Step 1: Find the cost of one book.

Divide the total cost by the number of books:
30 ÷ 5 = 6
So, one book costs $6.
2. Step 2: Multiply the cost of one book by the number of books.
If you wanted to buy 10 books, you would multiply:
6 × 10 = 60
So, 10 books would cost $60.

Example 2: Finding the Total Cost for Multiple Units

Let’s say it costs $3 for 1 pencil.

You want to buy 8 pencils.

1. Step 1: Find the cost of one pencil.

The cost of one pencil is given as $3.
2. Step 2: Multiply the cost of one pencil by the number of pencils you want.
3 × 8 = 24
So, 8 pencils will cost $24.

Example 3: Solving with Fractions or Decimals

Let’s say you know that 1 kg of sugar costs $2.5. How much would 6 kg of sugar cost?

1. Step 1: Find the cost of 1 kg of sugar.

The cost of 1 kg of sugar is $2.5.
2. Step 2: Multiply the cost of 1 kg by the number of kg.
2.5 × 6 = 15
So, 6 kg of sugar will cost $15.
Real-World Significance of the Unitary Method

1. Shopping:
o The unitary method is used to find out the price of one item and then calculate the total price for many items.
o Example: If you buy several items from a store, you can use the unitary method to calculate how much each item costs.
2. Travel:
o The unitary method helps in calculating the cost of a trip per kilometer or per person.
o Example: If a bus charges $20 for 10 kilometers, you can find the cost of traveling 1 kilometer using the unitary method.
3. Time and Work Problems:
o The unitary method is often used to calculate how long something will take or how much work will be done when you
know the rate of work.
o Example: If one person can complete a task in 5 hours, how many people are needed to complete it in 1 hour?
4. Cooking:
o If a recipe calls for certain quantities of ingredients for 4 people, you can use the unitary method to adjust the recipe for
more or fewer people.

Unitary Method Formula:

 For finding the value of 1 unit:

Value of 1 unit=Total ValueNumber of units\text{Value of 1 unit} = \frac{\text{Total Value}}{\text{Number of
units}}Value of 1 unit=Number of unitsTotal Value
 For finding the value of many units:
Total Value=Value of 1 unit×Number of units\text{Total Value} = \text{Value of 1 unit} \times \text{Number of
units}Total Value=Value of 1 unit×Number of units
