● Textbook: Spark 2

Keywords:

● Past Continuous
● Past Simple
● Expressing Opinions
● Ongoing Action
● Completed Action
● Critical Thinking

Lesson Organization (PPP):

1. Presentation (Teacher-Led with Assistant Support):

○ Warm-Up (5 minutes):
The teacher begins by asking students about their weekend activities. For
example: "What did you do last weekend?" and "What were you doing at 4 PM
yesterday?"
Role of Assistant: Help students who need clarification, encourage shy students
to speak, and prompt them to use past tenses in their answers.
○ Grammar Explanation (10 minutes):
The teacher will explain the use of past continuous (e.g., "I was reading a book")
and past simple (e.g., "I read a book"). The assistant helps by providing examples
and asking follow-up questions to ensure understanding.
Critical Thinking: Ask students when to use each tense and why, based on
context (e.g., "Why do we say 'I was watching TV' and not 'I watched TV' when
talking about an action that was happening at a specific time in the past?").
Role of Assistant: Walk around the class to help students who may need extra
assistance or clarification.
2. Practice (Student Work with Assistant Support):
○ Grammar Exercise (5 minutes):
Students will complete a worksheet that focuses on using past continuous vs.
past simple.
Role of Assistant: Monitor the class and offer support when students need help
with identifying the correct tense. Assist students in explaining why a certain
tense is used in each sentence.
○ Expressing Opinions Exercise (5 minutes):
Students will practice expressing opinions using structures like "I think..." and
"In my opinion...".
Role of Assistant: Help students structure their opinions and encourage them to
use full sentences. Move around the room, assisting groups or pairs with
expressing themselves clearly.
3. Production (Group/Pair Work with Assistant Facilitation):
○ Speaking Practice (10 minutes):
In pairs, students will role-play a scenario where they describe what they were
doing last weekend (past continuous) and what they did last weekend (past
simple).
Role of Assistant: Walk around and listen to the pairs. Provide feedback on their
use of past tenses, offering help if needed. If a student is struggling, prompt them
with questions like, “What were you doing at 3 PM on Saturday?” to encourage
the use of past continuous.
○ Writing Exercise (10 minutes):
Students will write a brief paragraph about a recent event. They should use both
past continuous (for actions happening at a specific time) and past simple (for
completed actions).
Role of Assistant: Provide support to individual students as needed, checking for
proper tense usage and offering feedback on their writing.
Methodology:

● Task-Based Learning: Students will engage with tasks like grammar exercises,
speaking, and writing to practice past continuous and past simple.
● Collaborative Learning: Students will work in pairs and groups, helping each other
understand and use the target grammar.
● Interactive Learning: The assistant will facilitate the use of interactive online quizzes
and discussions to reinforce the grammar points.
● Critical Thinking: The assistant will prompt students to explain why they are using
certain tenses and when it is appropriate to use them.

Assessment:

● Formative Assessment:
○ Observe and provide feedback on students’ participation during group and pair
work.
○ Review their grammar worksheets and interactive quiz responses to identify areas
of difficulty.
○ Listen to their speaking practices and provide feedback on their use of past
continuous and past simple.
○ Evaluate students’ writing to check if they correctly use both tenses.

Homework:

● Opinion Writing:
○ Write a short paragraph about a famous person they admire, using both past
continuous and past simple tenses. They should also express their opinion about
why they admire this person.

Teacher Assistant Notes:

● During the lesson: Circulate around the class during pair and group activities to ensure
students are using the correct tenses and expressing themselves clearly.
● For struggling students: Provide additional support by asking guiding questions or
offering simpler examples to clarify their understanding.
● Be proactive: Ensure that all students participate and feel confident in asking for help
when needed.
