CIVIL

ENGINEER
By: Michael Strickland
Where did it start (cited)?
Civil engineering has ancient origins. The earliest known civil engineering work dates back to the construction of the
Great Pyramids of Egypt, around 2,500 BCE. However, the formal recognition of civil engineering as a discipline
began in the 18th century during the Industrial Revolution when engineers began applying scientific principles to
infrastructure design (American Society of Civil Engineers).

Why is it important (cited)?

Civil engineering is crucial because it focuses on designing, building, and maintaining the infrastructure that society
depends on. Without civil engineers, there would be no reliable roads, bridges, water systems, or buildings to
support growing populations (National Society of Professional Engineers).

How has it evolved (cited)?

Civil engineering has evolved from rudimentary construction methods to the integration of advanced technology,
such as computer-aided design (CAD), geotechnical engineering, and sustainable building practices. The focus has
also shifted towards sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change and population growth (National
Academy of Engineering).

“Civil engineering is the profession that makes the world a safer, more efficient, and better place to live in”
(National Society of Professional Engineers).
What level of education do people entering this field need (cited)?
A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field is required to enter this career. Some positions may require
further qualifications such as a master's degree or certification as a Professional Engineer (PE) after passing licensing
exams (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

How will you obtain the necessary education to get into this field? What will you do?
To pursue a career in civil engineering, I am set to attend Arkansas State University in the fall which offers a civil
engineering program. I will focus on courses in mathematics, physics, and computer-aided design. Afterward, I will
take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam to become a licensed engineer.

What is the average salary of people that work in this field (cited)?
The average salary for civil engineers in the U.S. is approximately $88,000 per year, but with experience some
engineers are paid upwards of $170k+ (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Is this a comfortable salary for you? What will your lifestyle be like?
Yes, I believe this salary will provide a comfortable lifestyle. With a salary of $88,000, I plan on saving almost all of it
while living in an RV because why do I need to pay rent when I can pay the same amount for something just as good
as an apartment or house.

“Civil engineers earn a competitive salary, and many find the profession rewarding both financially and intellectually”
(American Society of Civil Engineers).
How difficult or easy is it to get a job in this field (cited)?
The demand for civil engineers is generally strong, but it can vary based on geographic location and economic
conditions. Large infrastructure projects tend to boost demand, but competition can be fierce for positions with top
firms (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Is the field expected to grow or decline in the near future (cited)?

The civil engineering field is expected to grow by 6% from 2021 to 2031, which is about as fast as the average for all
occupations. Growth is driven by the need to repair and upgrade infrastructure in the U.S. (U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics).

What do you need to do to ensure you can get a job in this field? What will that require?
Graduate from college and find the right place to work. Its extremely simple as Arkansas state has plenty of job areas
that come to find you and give you jobs.

How does the decline or growth influence your decision to pursue this career field?
It is a very open job field with a lot of needed jobs, therefore I am almost 100% guaranteed to get a job in this
position. Especially when it starts out above the middle class wage.

“Civil engineering is expected to grow steadily in the coming decade as infrastructure needs increase across the
country” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Something that makes this career interesting (cited):
One of the most interesting aspects of civil engineering is the variety of projects civil engineers work on. From
designing highways and dams to working on bridges and city planning, no two days are the same (American Society
of Civil Engineers).

What about this job is exciting to you?

I find the prospect of working on large-scale projects exciting. The idea that my work will directly contribute to the
construction of bridges, roads, and buildings that millions of people will use is inspiring to me.

What do people in this job do every day (cited)?

Civil engineers spend their days designing plans, conducting site assessments, managing projects, and working with
construction teams to ensure that designs are built to specification. They also handle project budgets, ensure
safety compliance, and may work on technical reports (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).

How do the job’s daily tasks make it more appealing to you?

I enjoy problem-solving and the idea of tackling complex challenges daily. Civil engineers need to think critically and
apply scientific knowledge to real-world situations, which aligns with my strengths.

Embed one quote (cited):

“Civil engineers are problem-solvers, working on everything from bridges to skyscrapers to make our daily lives
easier and safer” (American Society of Civil Engineers).
What talents and skills does a person need to be successful in this career (cited)?
Successful civil engineers need strong analytical skills, creativity, attention to detail, and
proficiency in mathematics and physics. They also need excellent communication skills to
work effectively with teams (National Society of Professional Engineers).

How do some of your talents match those that have success in this career field?
I am strong with some math and problem-solving, both of which are crucial for success in
civil engineering. Additionally, I enjoy working with others and collaborating on complex
projects, which fits well with the team-oriented nature of civil engineering.

What skills do you have?

I am very skilled in critical thinking and problem solving, but I am also very skilled with 3D
CAD and software which is used for this field.

What are the advantages of this career choice (cited)?

Advantages of a career in civil engineering include job security, competitive salary,
opportunities for advancement, and the satisfaction of working on impactful projects
(American Society of Civil Engineers, ).
What are the disadvantages of this career choice (cited)?
Disadvantages can include long hours, especially when working on large projects,
and the pressure of meeting deadlines and staying within budget. The work can also
be physically demanding, as engineers may need to visit construction sites (U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics, ).

Why don’t the career’s disadvantages stop you from pursuing it?
Despite the challenges, the opportunity to work on meaningful projects and the
financial rewards outweigh the disadvantages. I am willing to manage the long hours
and pressure, knowing that I’ll be working on projects that make a real difference.

What advantages of the career are especially appealing to you?

The opportunity to work on large-scale infrastructure projects that improve society
and the chance for job stability and advancement are especially appealing to me.
