ENGINEER
By: Michael Strickland
Where did it start (cited)?
Civil engineering has ancient origins. The earliest known civil engineering work dates back to the construction of the
Great Pyramids of Egypt, around 2,500 BCE. However, the formal recognition of civil engineering as a discipline
began in the 18th century during the Industrial Revolution when engineers began applying scientific principles to
infrastructure design (American Society of Civil Engineers).
How will you obtain the necessary education to get into this field? What will you do?
To pursue a career in civil engineering, I am set to attend Arkansas State University in the fall which offers a civil
engineering program. I will focus on courses in mathematics, physics, and computer-aided design. Afterward, I will
take the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam to become a licensed engineer.
What is the average salary of people that work in this field (cited)?
The average salary for civil engineers in the U.S. is approximately $88,000 per year, but with experience some
engineers are paid upwards of $170k+ (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Is this a comfortable salary for you? What will your lifestyle be like?
Yes, I believe this salary will provide a comfortable lifestyle. With a salary of $88,000, I plan on saving almost all of it
while living in an RV because why do I need to pay rent when I can pay the same amount for something just as good
as an apartment or house.
What do you need to do to ensure you can get a job in this field? What will that require?
Graduate from college and find the right place to work. Its extremely simple as Arkansas state has plenty of job areas
that come to find you and give you jobs.
How does the decline or growth influence your decision to pursue this career field?
It is a very open job field with a lot of needed jobs, therefore I am almost 100% guaranteed to get a job in this
position. Especially when it starts out above the middle class wage.
Embed one quote (cited):
“Civil engineering is expected to grow steadily in the coming decade as infrastructure needs increase across the
country” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Something that makes this career interesting (cited):
One of the most interesting aspects of civil engineering is the variety of projects civil engineers work on. From
designing highways and dams to working on bridges and city planning, no two days are the same (American Society
of Civil Engineers).
How do some of your talents match those that have success in this career field?
I am strong with some math and problem-solving, both of which are crucial for success in
civil engineering. Additionally, I enjoy working with others and collaborating on complex
projects, which fits well with the team-oriented nature of civil engineering.
Why don’t the career’s disadvantages stop you from pursuing it?
Despite the challenges, the opportunity to work on meaningful projects and the
financial rewards outweigh the disadvantages. I am willing to manage the long hours
and pressure, knowing that I’ll be working on projects that make a real difference.
