AZAD JAMMU & KASHMIR

History:
After the partition of Sub-Continent in 1947, the princely States were given
the option of joining either India or Pakistan. However, Hari Singh, the Maharaja of
Jammu and Kashmir, wanted Jammu and Kashmir to remain independent. In order
to buy some time, he signed a stand-still agreement, which sidestepped the
agreement that each princely State would join either India or Pakistan . In view of
geographical, religious and historical links the people of Jammu & Kashmir state
demanded freedom, instead, entered into an unfortunate conspiracy with the
Hindu leadership and acceded to India. This sparked the liberation movement of
the Muslim population of the State against the Dogra and Indian forces in Kashmir.
As a result of this freedom movement, a part of the State was liberated from the
Dogra-cum-fadian domination in October 1947, and named Azad State of Jammu &
Kashmir.
It has its own elected President, Prime Minister, Legislature, High Court, Supreme
Court and Official Flag.
Geography and climate:
The northern part of Azad Jammu and Kashmir encompasses the lower area
of the Himalayas, including Jamgarh Peak (4,734 meters). However, Sarwaali Peak”
(6326 meters) in Neelum Valley is the highest peak in the State. Fertile, green,
mountainous valleys are characteristic of Azad Kashmir's geography, making it one
of the most beautiful regions of the Subcontinent. The region receives rainfall in
both the winter and the summer. Muzaffarabad and Pattan are among the wettest
areas of Pakistan. Throughout most of the region, the average rainfall exceeds
1400 mm, with the highest average rainfall occurring near Muzaffarabad (around
1800 mm). During the summer season, monsoon floods of the rivers Jhelum and
Neelum are common due to extreme rains and snow melting .
People & Culture:
Azad Jammu and Kashmir is a fascinating land of people, languages &
culture. The texture of present population is composed of races claiming their
descent from Semitic, Mongoloid, Aryans, Persians, and Turks& Arabs. The people
of districts Kotli, Mirpur & Bhimber are sturdy, simple, truthful and deeply attached
to their land. The culture of this area resembles to that of the adjoining area of
Punjab. The people of districts Poonch, Bagh, Haveli & Sudhnoti are adventure
loving and there are numerous anecdotes of their matchless valor as well as
inspiring sacrifices for freedom. While Muzaffarabad District has its own distinctive
culture. The people of the State are intelligent ingenious, hardworking, dynamic &
skillful.
Tourist Destinations:
The State of Jammu and Kashmir embodies the poetry of nature, which no
human language can interpret in words. Majestic ice capped mountains, verdant
woods, lively rivers and placid lakes form the landscape of the state. Its snow-
covered peaks, dense forests, winding rivers, turbulent foaming streams, wheat
scented valleys, velvet green plateaus and climate varying from arctic to tropical,
all join together to make it an excellent tourist attraction. Valleys like Neelum,
Jhelum, Leepa, Sudan Gali, Mehmood Gali, Devi Gali, Ganga Choti, Rawalakot,
Banjonsa,Valley Binah, Khoi Ratta, Tata pani, Samahni, Mangla lake and Baghsar
unfold delightful scenic beauty and provide a feast of pleasure to a discerning
tourist’s eyes.
Azad Kashmir is also blessed with a varied mountainous landscape ranging
from low hills to high mountains (2000 to 6000 meters) most suitable for soft to
medium adventure tourism. The area provides excellent opportunities for rock
climbing, trekking, mountaineering, summer camping and hikes. Moreover blessed
with large number of rivers and streams, the state offers great potential for white
water sports like rafting, canoeing and kayaking.

DISTRICTS MUZAFFARABAD & HATIAN

Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad state of Jammu & Kashmir, is situated at
the confluence of the Jhelum & Neelum Rivers. Its elevation is 724 meters (ASL)
and at a distance of 138 kilometers from Rawalpindi and about 76 kilometers from
Abbottabad. Muzaffarabad has been named after Sultan Muzaffar Khan, the chief of
the Bomba Dynasty (in 1652). Cradled by lofty mountains, Muzaffarabad is a blend
of varied cultures and languages. Being the capital of the State it has all the
necessary facilities of life. In addition, there are two historical forts, the Red &
Black Fort, situated on the sides of river Neelum. The Neelum River streams,
proudly through the hub of the town, joins river Jhelum at Domel and plays a
dominant role in the micro climate of Muzaffarabad. The capital city of Azad Jammu
& Kashmir, “Muzaffarabad” also serves as a base camp for the tourist, intending to
visit tourist spots and other historical, cultural and traditional aspects of AJK.
Muzaffarabad is not only the hub of political and cultural activities but also has
various spots for leisure. Domel, the junction point of Neelum & Jhelum Rivers,
presents a magic beauty from here. “Lohaar Gali” situated 9 Kilometers from the
city on Abbottabad road, offers a bird eye view of the capital city. At night, the
lights of the city present an unforgettable scene from this point. Similarly,
Muzaffarabad city can be viewed from Sathra of Tariq Abad by-pass road and Maira
Tanolian.
Red fort:
Muzaffarabad Fort, generally known as Red Fort is a witness to the ancient
history of this great city. It is said that construction of Fort was initially taken up by
chuk rulers to counter the offensives of the intruders. However, Sultan Muzaffar
Khan, the founder of Muzaffarabad town finally completed it in 1646. During the
Mughal rule in Kashmir, this fort lost its importance, as they were more interested
in other parts of their empire. But when Durrani’s took over the rule of this area, it
again came in to being lime light and its importance was recovered. Afterwards
after the Dogra rule of Maharaja Gulab Singh and Maharaja Ranbir Singh, the fort
was reconstructed and extended according to their political and militarial
requirements. However towards the end of 1947, the Dogra’s fled away leaving the
fort wide open to anybody. Since then it has braved devastating floods, ravages of
time, and other hazards to project its inherent glory and historical background.
Barsala:
Historical tourist lodge Barsalla is located at a distance of 100 kilometer
from Islamabad and 40 kilometers from Muree. On the way to Muzaffarabad it is
only 3 kilo meters from Kohala Bridge that is entry point in AJK. This Lodge was
firstly built in Dogra rule but historical importance is due to founder of Pakistan
Mohammad Ali Jinnah who was stayed here in 1944 when he was returning from
Srinagar. That particular chair is still present in this lodge on which Quaid was
seated. Dograas rulers used to stay here while traveling between Rawalpindi and
Srinagar. AJK Tourism Department has repaired it after it was hit by 2005 earth
quake and now it has seven rooms for tourists. In summer season cool breeze from
river Jhelum gives a pleasant touch. This historical resort is a memorable place for

their heart. The adjacent Pir Asimar, Pawna, Danna and the areas in the bottom of

and Bani Hafiz were reported to be completely destroyed when the mountains
collided very badly and got converted into heaps of rubble burying about 575
people underneath.
The collapsed mountain peaks and the rubble of the four villages blocked the
natural flow of the water which resulted in the creation of a natural Lake stretched
over an area of about 3 Kms. This newly born lake was named as “Zilzaal Lake”
