Acute - An angle that when measured is less than 90°


Add/ Addition - Plus the two numbers together, e.g 1 + 2 = 3
Algebra - Using letters in the space of unknown numbers.
Angle -The space, measured in degrees, between two lines that
meet.
Approximate - To estimate using a number, amount or total.
Arc - A section of the circumference of a circle.
Area - The space inside a shape. This is calculated in different
ways depending on the shape
Average - Also known as the mean, the average looks at all the
results and add them together. You then divide by the total that
there is. This gives an average score overall, taking into account
all al the data.
Axis - A set of axes have an x axis and a yaxis.

Base - The bottom of something eg/ shape
Bidmas - The order in which you perform the operations. This
stands for Brackets, Indices, Division, Multiplication, Addition
and Subtraction.
Brackets - These are included in many maths questions and look
like these (). You must complete the sum inside the brackets
first.
Base The bottom of something eg/ shape.
Binomial is a polynomial with only terms.

Capacity - The amount a container can hold
Complex conjugate- another complex number that has the
same real part as the original complex number and the
imaginary part has the same magnitude but opposite sign.
Centre - The middle
Circumference - The distance around the outside of a circle.
Calculate - Work out
Congruent - This fancy word is used when looking at shapes. It
means the same.
Consecutive - Numbers that follow each other in an unbroken
sequence.
Cube - A symmetrical 3D shape made up of 6 equal square
faces. An example of this shape is a rubix cube.
Cube number - A cube number is a number times by itself 3
times. Eg/ 1 x 1 x 1 = 1, 2 x 2 x 2 = 8.....
Cuboid - A 3D shape made up of 6 rectangular faces. An
example of this shape is a cereal box.
Cumulative Frequency - A running total of the frequencies.
Cylinder - A shape that has a pair of parallel sides and
oval/circular bases. An example of this shape is a Pringles tube.
Coefficient- is a number or symbol that is multiplied by a
variable in an algebraic expression.
cosine is defined as the ratio of the length of the adjacent side
to that of the longest side i.e. the hypotenuse.
constant -is a value that doesn't change

Dividing polynomials- is an arithmetic operation that involves
dividing one polynomial by another.
Decimal- is a number that represents a part of a whole number
Degree - A unit used for measuring angles
Denominator - The bottom number of a fraction
Diameter - The line that passes through a circle, from edge to
edge, through the centre. It is also twice the radius
measurement.
Division - Splitting a number into a smaller one.
Discrete - Discrete is a type of data. It can only take certain
values. For example, if you are calculating with people, you
cannot have of a person.

Exponent is defined as the method of expressing large numbers
in terms of powers.
equation -a set of numbers that contain operations and can
contain a variable.
Equilateral - A triangle with equal sides and angles.
Estimate - To make an approximation (guess)
Even - This can relate to the even numbers 2, 4, 6, 8.... Or
having an even chance in probabilitiy. This mean you have the
same chance as one thing happening than the other.

Function notation- is an equation that is written as a function


in terms of the independent variable.
Factor - Are number that can go into other numbers. Eg. The
factors of 6 are: 1,2,3,6 because 1 x 6 = 6 and 2 x 3 = 6
Factorise - This is the opposite of expanding. Factorise means
putting the brackets back in by looking for common factors. Eg.
4x + 44(x+1)
Fraction - A fraction is part of a whole. The amount which the
whole is spilt up into, in down to the denominator. Eg. 1/5 is 1
out of 5 equal parts.
Frequency - Frequency means the total number.
Formula -A rule defined by symbols. Eg/ The formula for the
Area of a rectangle = I x w (Length x Width).
Figure – Two dimensional shape.
Formula – An equation stating a rule.
Function – The relationship between the 2 variables.
Fibonacci sequence- is a sequence in which each number is
the sum of the two preceding one.

geometric mean- is an average or mean that demonstrates the central tendency


of a group of numbers
geometric sequence- is a sequence of numbers in which the ratio of every two
successive terms is the constant.

Greatest Common Factor - The greatest common factor (GCF) of


a set of numbers is the largest factor that all the numbers share.
Geometry – A study of angles, curves and lines in 2 and 3
dimensions
Graph - pictorial representation of statistical data or of a
functional relationship between variables.
Graphing polynomial function - touch the x-axis at zeros with
even multiplicities.

harmonic sequence-is a progression formed by taking the


reciprocals of an arithmetic progression
Heptagon - Polygon with 7 sides
Hexagon - Polygon with 6 sides
harmonic mean- is a type of average that's used to calculate
the average of ratios or rates.
Hypotenuse - Longest side of a right angled triangle.

Intercept- is the point where a graph of a function or equation
crosses an axis on a Cartesian coordinate system

inverse function - is defined as a function, which can reverse
into another function
Infinite - Unlimited number or number without an end.
Integers- are the collection of whole numbers and negative
numbers.
Isometric - Containing equal measurements

Jointly Proportional - I variable directly proportional to other
variables one at a time.

kilogram- ( is the base unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI), having the unit
symbol kg.

Kilometer- is a metric unit used to measure length or distance.

Lowest terms- is a term used to describe a fraction where the
numerator and denominator have no common factors other
than 1
linear equation- is an equation in which the highest power of
the variable is always 1.
Least Common Denominator - Smallest whole number used as
denominator for two or more fractions.
Linear – Reffering to a straight line.
line segment- is a part of a line that connects two points which
are considered to be its endpoints.
less-than -sign is a mathematical symbol that denotes an
inequality between two values.

Multiplication is the method of finding the product of two or
more numbers.
Median - After putting your data in order, the median is the
middle value.
Midpoint - In the middle of a line or two points.
Multinomial- an algebraic expression has two or more unlike
terms .
Multiple - the numbers you get when you multiply a certain
number by an integer.
Monomial – A single term in algebraic expression

Numerator - The top number of a Fraction
Number- is a mathematical object used for counting,
measuring, and labeling.
Nonagon- is a polygon that has 9 sides, 9 interior angles and 9
exterior angles.
numerical expression- is a mathematical statement that
combines numbers and mathematical operations, such as
addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.

number sentence- is a combination of numbers and


mathematical operations that children are often required to
solve.

its denominator like 6/8.
Proportion - Equality of 2 ratios
Product – Multiply the terms.
Perimeter – The distance area the outside of a shape.

Quotient- is the answer obtained when we divide one number
by another
quadratic surd- is an expression containing square roots, such
that the number under the square root is a rational number and
is not a perfect square.
Quadrilateral - Polygon with 4 sides
Qualitative Data - Data categories such as food, sport, hobbies
Quantitative Data - Data that can be counted or measured.
Quadrangle - Polygon with 4 angles

Radius - Distance from circumference to center of a circle.
Ratio - Relation or comparison between 2 quantities.
Range - Measures the spread of a data set. This is calculated by
taking the lowest number away from the highest number.
right angle - is an angle that measures exactly 90 degrees, or a
quarter turn.
Reciprocals - Two mumbers whose product is one.
remainder theorem- in math states that when a polynomial is
divided by a linear polynomial, the remainder is equal to the
value of the polynomial at a specific value of x
Remainder- is the value left after the division
Rhombus - Parallelogram having all sides and opposite angles
equal.
Right angle - Angle measuring 90 degrees
rational number -is a real number.
Radical- is a mathematical symbol that represents a root of a
number, such as a square root or cube roo

Sample Space - All the possible outcomes that could happen
from an experiment.
Scale Factor - A number expressing how large or small the
enlargement of a shape is,
Scalene - A type of Triangle that has 3 unequal sides.

triangle is the ratio of the side opposite the angle to the
hypotenuse.

Skew lines - those lines not lying in the same plane in space.
Solid - 3D shape with length, width & height.
Speed - The movement of something over a distance in a given
time.
Square root - A number that multiplies by itself produces
original number.
Straight angle - An angle which measures 180 degrees .

at a point. These can be found touching the outer of a circle.
Term - A number in a sequence.
Tessellation - A pattern of shapes that fit together with no gaps.
Transpose- is to move something from one side of an equation
to another
Trapezium - A 4 sided shape with 2 parallel sides.
Transformation - To manipulate a shape. In total, there are four
transformations.
Triangle – Polygon with 3 sides.
Trigonometry (trig) – A study of triangles.
Trinomial – Algebraic expression with 3 terms.
