CSE 103: CIRCUIT AND SYSTEMS-I

Lecture 13

Dr. Amaad Khalil

Lecturer
DCSE, UET Peshawar
Introduction to Mesh Current Method
➢ The Mesh Current Method is well-organized method for solving a
circuit.

➢ A loop is any closed path around a circuit. To trace a loop, start at any
component terminal, and trace a path through connected elements
until get back to the starting point.
➢ A mesh is a restricted kind of loop; a mesh is a loop that contains no
other loops

➢ Trace the loops in the clockwise direction, the three loops in our
circuit

2
Introduction to Mesh Current Method
➢ The difference between mesh and nodal analysis is that nodal
analysis is an application of Kirchhoff’s current law, which is
used for calculating the voltages at each node in an equation.
While mesh analysis is an application of Kirchhoff’s voltage law
which is used for calculating the current.

➢ The Mesh Current Method is an alternative to the Node

Voltage Method for solving a circuit.

3
Introduction to Mesh Current Method
➢ Apply Kirchhoff’s voltage law around the two meshes, expressing
all voltages across resistors in terms of the mesh currents

4
Mesh Current Method
➢ Steps of Mesh current method
The Mesh Current Method is based on loop currents flowing around
meshes.
• Identify the meshes, (the open windows of the circuit).
• Assign a current variable to each mesh, using a consistent
direction (clockwise or counterclockwise).
• Write Kirchhoff's Voltage Law equations around each mesh.
• Solve the resulting system of equations for all mesh currents.
• Solve for other element currents and voltages you want using
Ohm's Law.

5
Mesh Current Method

➢ Identify the meshes

Circuit has two meshes. Identify two loop currents and call them iI
and iII.

➢ Direction
The loop current directions are the same, both flow in a clockwise
direction.
6
Mesh Current Method
➢ Write Kirchhoff's Voltage Law (KVL) around each mesh

7
Mesh Current Method
➢ Solve the system of mesh equations to find the currents

Now we know one of the loop currents.
