Jigging
The splines used from earlier process for jigging must be cleaned by stripping in etching tank. Splines are clamped well
with the flight bar to provide a good electrical contact. 4 nos. of splines used in each flight bar in the case of clamp
jigging and 6 nos. In pin jigging (but may vary according to the profile length). The profiles are jigged horizontally by
clamping both ends of the profile with spline using plastic clamp. Pin jigs are used for lighter section jigging. Sections are
jigged with a slope to avoid gas trapping and to minimize carry over, depending on the profiles.

SERVICES / b. Anodizing

Pre-treatment:
Cleaning:
The load is lifted by the crane and the profiles are dipped in a mild Alkaline cleaner bath. The load is then taken out and
quickly dipped in the next rinse tank to rinse thoroughly any residuals on the surface of the profile.

Etching:
Etching is done to produce a matt finish as per Customer’s requirement.
The load is dipped in a solution of caustic soda.
The load then taken out and rinsed immediately in two rinse tanks to remove any residue from the surface and to avoid
contamination of the next tanks.

De-smutting:
The load is dipped in desmut tank to remove the smut film caused by etching process. The load is then rinsed thoroughly
in two rinsing tanks.

Anodizing:
The load is dipped in anodizing bath that contains diluted Sulphuric acid with electrical current to form anodic film as
per customer’s requirement.

Electrolytic Colouring:
Tin Electrolytic Colouring: is also done to obtain bronze colour in various shades by using Tin Sulphate solution Anodized
load is dipped in Tin electrolyte bath depending on the shade required. The colouring metal deposits electrolytically into
the anodic film at particular voltage and time. When colouring is completed, the load is rinsed, matched and again
rinsed in 2 tanks before sealing.

Dyeing:
The anodized load is dipped in the dyeing bath to obtain a gold colour in various shades.
The gold bath contains dyeing solution. The dyeing time depending on the required shade.
When the dyeing time is over, the load is taken out, rinsed and matched with the standard sample.
The load is rinsed in 2 tanks before sealing.

Sealing:
All loads must be rinsed in the distilled water tank before taken into the sealing tank.
The load is dipped in the sealing tank containing boiling water.
When the sealing time is over, the load is taken out by the un-jigging operator, who will test and record the thickness and
sealing test as per QMSP 4-10.
Film Thickness is to be checked for all loads.

SERVICES / c. Crimping

c. Crimping
Purpose:
To reduce the heat transfer between the inner and the outter sides of the window, it can also serve as a decorative aspect
allowing bi-caloration.

Process
In this process, the profiles of thermally broken systems are joined together by means of a rigid and strong glass fibred
polyamide insulation strip which is thermal resistant in nature, minimizing the thermal conductivity.

- Thermal break
Gulf Extrusions provides its customers with thermally broken architectural systems, which help in conserving energy,
reducing water condensation as well as noise pollution. Systems that are currently offered are;
- SS-600 Hinged Systems
- SS-900 Sliding Systems
- Thermal Broken Curtain Wall Systems
- Montana 120mm Sliding System

Case Study: The new Montana Thermal Break 120mm Sliding System is designed for heavy duty (H-HC40) according to
the American National Standard. The results have been impressive and apply to energy conservation, sound reduction
and water and dust proofing. The Montana Thermal Break with 16mm glass fibre reinforced polyamide insulation has
the sought after properties of high thermal resistance, rigidity hardness and strength.

The importance of thermal conductivity in the aluminium frame becomes apparent when one considers that the frame
accounts for an average of 25% of the total window surface.
- Normal Aluminium Profiles: K=5.7 W/M2K
- With 16mmThermal Strip: K=3.3 W/M2K

The system consists of a single frame and shutter profile that will be used on all four sides with snap on track clips. The
16mm polyamide strips are introduced into the frame and shutter profiles, and are then externally crimped using special
tooling. The shear test of the crimped profile is tested to ensure maximum strength. The system covers two, three and
four shutters including profiles for top and bottom fixed lights. Special lids have been designed to cover the frame tracks
at the area where the sliding shutter is fixed.

For better performance of the system, alignment cleats for the frame and shutter are used. Durable weather
sealment mastic is a must at all joints. Specially designed EPDM gaskets are made available with the system to enhance the
performance and create easy assembly. Other specially designed accessories such as rollers and flush handles come as
part of the system.

Thermal Break System functions to reduce thermal heat transmittance. Energy finds the weakest point between the walls,
frames and glass to pass from. It is apparent in the thermal analysis, where the isothermal lines are very constant at the
glass level, but there is more activity at the level of the frame where the energy flow is higher.

Building the Burj Khalifa, Dubai, UAE
Building the Burj Khalifa
Burj Khalifa (formerly known as Burj
Dubai), an iconic building symbolizing
modernity and engineering prowess
has reached a defining moment in
its history as the world’s tallest tower
and man-made structure making the
surrounding district the most prestigious
square kilometer in the world.

The tower design created by celebrity

architect Adrian Smith for Chicago
based Skidmore, Owings and
Merrill (SOM) is inspired from the
geometrics of the desert flower and the
patterning system employed in Islamic
architecture. It combines these historical
and cultural influences with cutting-
edge technology to achieve a high
performance building, which will set the
new standard for development in the
Middle East and become the model for
the future of the city of Dubai.

The high performance exterior cladding

system is employed to withstand
the extreme temperature during the
summer months of Dubai. Primary
materials include reflective glazing
aluminium and textured stainless
steel spandrel panels and the vertical
stainless tubular fins accentuating the
height and the slenderness of the tower.
Since aluminium profiles constitute
major binder of all façade elements,
Project consultants and concerned
technical personnel have given special
attention to this element and defined
strict quality regulations for aluminium
extruders and manufacturers to quality
for Burj Khalifa.

Gulf Extrusions is permanently looking ahead to the inevitable changes of the new era and to maintain the
leadership at the forefront of this highly challenging market; committed with great confidence the supply of
aluminium extrusions for this prestigious project after being nominated as the exclusive aluminium extruder and
supplier of extruded aluminium profiles for the tallest tower in the world.

Gulf Extrusions takes pride in being associated with this great inimitable engineering manifestation.

6. Material Safety Data sheets

MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET
Date: 31ST May 2020
PRODUCT HEALTH & SAFETY INFORMATION SHEET FOR ALUMINIUM EXTRUSIONS
GENERAL DATA
Pure aluminium is a soft, malleable, ductile, silvery metal, which is a good conductor of heat and electricity.
It can be alloyed with other elements to enhance and add to its natural characteristics. It can be supplied in a
variety of forms including sheet and extrusions.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Although it is generally agreed that aluminium is an inert substance, hazardous situations can arise when it is
subjected to various processes such as: - Anodizing, Polishing, Thermal break, Welding etc…

HAZARDS
The hazards associated with aluminium are as follows: -
Handling
Solid
• Possibility of sharp edges, use gloves when handling.
• Aluminium experiences no color changes when heated – use gloves to protect against burns.
• It must be free from moisture before charging into furnaces.
Liquid
When melting, casting and processing, appropriate protective equipment must be worn – glasses, goggles or
visor, metal shedding overalls, foundry footwear, and gloves.
All tools used with molten metal must be dry.

Gulf Extrusions LLC, Po Box 5598, Dubai, United Arab Emirates Tel: 00971 4 884 6146 Fax: 00971 4 884 6830 www.gulfex.com
Fire
Not a fire hazard except in finely divided form.
Explosion

Molten aluminium may explode upon contact with water, and many other substances including
oxidizing agents.
• All aluminium solids must be free from moisture before adding to molten metal.
• Finely divided aluminium may explode when mixed with halogen acids, halogenated solvents or
ammonium nitrate.
Health & Toxicity
• Aluminium is poorly absorbed by the body. Aluminium has never been found to be toxic except
under quite unusual conditions of exposure. At present, there is no direct clinical or experimental
evidence that aluminium is neurotoxic under ordinary conditions of environmental exposure.
• The HSE recommended long-term exposure limits (eight-hour time weighted average) for aluminium
metal and oxide in the air is 10mgm-3 – the same as for all other “nuisance dust”. However,
inhalation of any dust or fumes should be avoided.

PRECAUTIONS
Storage
Keep dry, away from incompatible materials, including nitrates, acids and alkalis, which may result in fire and
explosion.
Spillage
Solid aluminium presents no problem. Spillages of molten aluminium freeze up very quickly but substantial
amounts may be dammed using DRY sand or DRY Alumina.
Disposal
(Recycle) Finely divided aluminium may be reactive and its hazard characteristics should be determined prior
to disposal.
Transport
Solid and liquid aluminium is not classified as dangerous for conveyance by Road / Sea / Air-Plane.

FINISHES AND SECONDARY PROCESSES

Polyester Powder Coating
• Adequately cured and adherent coatings of polyester may be expected to present negligible hazard
under normal conditions of use where risk of transfer into the body is minimal. Some colored
coatings contain pigments of lead compounds which, although they are of low solubility, should not
be used where they are likely to be sucked or chewed by children.
• Dust from sawing etc… presents the normal hazard of any dust and should be controlled by
extraction.
• Dust from colored powder should be collected by vacuum and disposed of by approved means.
• Burning of the coating can produce harmful materials which will vary and depend upon the factors
present during combustion but could include acrolein and other aldehydes, phthalic anhydride,
phenol, nitrogen oxides, amines, hydrogen cyanide and low molecular weight free isocyanate.

Gulf Extrusions LLC, Po Box 5598, Dubai, United Arab Emirates Tel: 00971 4 884 6146 Fax: 00971 4 884 6830 www.gulfex.com
WELDING
• MIG welding or plasma arc cutting of aluminium alloys can generate ozone, nitric oxides and
Ultraviolet radiation. Ozone over exposure may result in mucous membrane irritation, as well as
other pulmonary discomforts.
• Fumes may also arise from volatilization of the electrodes or its coatings. The inhalation of freshly
formed metallic oxides such as cadmium, chrome, nickel that may be present as alloying
constituents may cause welding fume fever.
• Good ventilation is recommended and observance of normal protective measures generally
applicable to welding operators.
• It should be noted ozone could be generated quite a distance from the arc.

THERMAL BREAK
FILLING
This product involves the exothermic interaction of two chemicals to form a polyurethane polymer; the
manufacture recommendations for handling the components must be followed. In addition, the presence of
water, which modifies the reaction, must be avoided. Extraction of air from the process area is essential.
There are two mandatory rules during filling: -
• There must be no smoking in the department – it is suggested that the ‘miner’s code’ be adopted.
This is not primarily a fire hazard: the chemical fumes will decompose if drawn through red-hot
burning tobacco giving highly toxic products.
• Fire, most likely of electrical plant origin, is extremely dangerous: all precautions to prevent it must
be taken. If there is a fire, however there must be no attempt to extinguish it – immediate
evacuation must be the rule. The local fire service must be informed of this potential hazard and
may recommend the local provision of rescue, breathing equipment and the appropriate training in
its use.
AFTER CURING & MILLING
There is an almost identical material used to line and/or coat potable water and food containers. The two
components used to create the thermal break, when dispensed in the correct ratio, are completely inert
when they have reacted together and are fully cured. The material supplier regularly monitors the plant to
ensure the ratios and dispensing is correct.

SAWING
Provided the material has been dispensed correctly as above, no hazardous fumes are given off when sawing
through the material. The dust is a different proposition simply because it is a dust and any dust particle can
be considered hazardous. We recommend that the sawing operation is fitted with an exhaust facility to draw
off and collect the dust particles. Any not collected should be regularly cleaned from the floor using a
vacuum cleaner and dust from both should be carefully disposed of. The burning of the dust or inhalation
through a lighted cigarette etc. can produce harmful products.
