the following specification particularly describes the invention and the manner in which it is to
be performed.
FIELD OF INVENTION

The present invention relates to the field of intelligent transportation systems (ITS)
and smart parking management solutions, more particularly, to a smart system for
object detection in parking spot counter.

5 BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Efficient parking management is increasingly becoming a critical concern in urban

areas, commercial complexes, and public facilities. Traditional methods of parking
management often involve manual counting of vehicles or the use of basic sensor
technologies, which can be both labor-intensive and prone to errors. As the number
10 of vehicles on the road continues to grow, the demand for effective parking
solutions has escalated, necessitating the development of more advanced systems.

Conventional parking management systems typically rely on simple technologies

such as boom barriers, ticketing systems, and basic sensors like inductive loops,
pressure sensors, or ultrasonic detectors. These systems, while functional, present
15 several drawbacks that hinder their efficiency and accuracy. Manual counting
requires human intervention, which is not only time-consuming but also increases
labour costs. Human error can lead to inaccurate counting and reporting of available
parking spaces. Manual processes cannot provide real-time updates, leading to
potential delays and confusion for drivers searching for parking. These sensors
20 require installation under the pavement, which can be costly and disruptive to
existing infrastructure. Physical sensors are susceptible to wear and tear, requiring
regular maintenance and replacements. Environmental factors such as debris, water,
and temperature variations can affect sensor accuracy, leading to false readings.
Ultrasonic sensors may have limited range and can be affected by environmental
25 noise, leading to inaccuracies in vehicle detection. The effectiveness of ultrasonic
sensors is highly dependent on their precise positioning and alignment.
Conventional systems often fail to provide real-time information, resulting in
outdated and inaccurate data on parking availability. Without real-time data,
parking management cannot optimize the utilization of available spaces, leading to

2
inefficiencies. Expanding traditional parking systems to accommodate larger
parking areas involves significant costs in terms of additional sensors, infrastructure
modifications, and labor. Integrating conventional systems with modern
technologies and platforms can be complex and costly. Drivers often face
5 difficulties in finding available parking spots, leading to frustration and wasted
time. Traditional systems lack advanced features such as real-time notifications,
reservation capabilities, and historical data analysis, which can enhance user
experience and operational efficiency.

Therefore, there remains a need in the art for a smart system for object
10 detection in parking spot counter that does not suffer from the above-mentioned
deficiencies or at least provides a viable, economical and effective solution.

In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, the system

20 includes

a. Sensors:

Cameras: High-resolution cameras are installed at strategic locations to capture

images or videos of the parking area.

Ultrasonic Sensors: These sensors detect the presence of vehicles in parking spots
25 by measuring distance.

Infrared Sensors: Used to detect vehicles by sensing the heat they emit.

8
Magnetic Sensors: Detect vehicles through disruptions in the magnetic field caused
by metallic objects.

b. Processing Unit:

Microcontroller/Microprocessor: Handles data processing and runs detection

5 algorithms.

Edge Devices: Perform real-time processing to reduce latency.

c. Communication Module:

Wi-Fi/Bluetooth: Enables wireless communication with a central server.

LoRa: Provides long-range, low-power communication capabilities.

10 d. Software:

Object Detection Algorithm: Machine learning models such as Mask R-CNN

(Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks) are used for detecting
vehicles.

Data Processing: Filters and analyzes data from sensors.

15 User Interface: Displays parking spot status in real-time through a mobile app or
web dashboard.

In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, the system the

input video, the Mask R-CNN object detection model is utilized to identify cars and
their bounding boxes. Once these bounding boxes are obtained, the Intersection
20 over Union (IoU) for each pair of bounding boxes and parking spot coordinates is
computed. If the IoU value for any parking spot exceeds a specified threshold, that
parking spot is classified as occupied.

a. Detection of Parking Spots:

The initial stage of the parking space detection system involves identifying the
25 parking slots. Several methods can accomplish this, including detecting parking
lines using edge detectors offered by OpenCV. However, this strategy's reliability
diminishes in parking areas without predetermined boundaries. An alternative

9
approach assumes that vehicles remaining immobile for an extended duration are
parked. Valid parking spaces, in this context, refer to designated zones where
stationary vehicles are located. This approach is also prone to false positives and
negatives. When automation demonstrates its lack of reliability, manual
5 intervention may be necessary. Our technique differs from space-based methods as
it does not require labeling and training for each individual parking facility. Instead,
it requires the initial marking of parking lot boundaries and surrounding road areas
during setup. Our method involves selecting a frame from the camera or stream of
the parking area and manually indicating the parking regions. The Matplotlib
10 module in Python, with its Polygon Selector feature, enables precise selection of
polygonal regions.

b. Parking Booking and Management Model:

The system allows users to input their credentials, choose a location, and select a
date and time for their reservation. The system verifies the availability and allows
15 users to review and confirm their booking. An administrator can then review and
either accept or reject the reservation, informing the user of the status and
completing the transaction if accepted.

3. Benefits for Society:

20 Reduced Time Spent Searching: Parking spot management systems eliminate the
need to circle around for an open spot, saving drivers considerable time.

Less Stress Levels: Knowing a spot is reserved in advance reduces anxiety, making
driving more enjoyable and stress-free.

Enhanced Efficiency: Drivers can plan their trips more efficiently by reserving a
25 parking space in advance, which is especially helpful for time-sensitive
appointments or errands.

Better Accessibility: Parking management systems can integrate accessibility

features, making it easier for drivers with impairments to find and book accessible
parking spaces.

10
Potential Cost Savings: Demand-driven dynamic pricing can offer more affordable
parking options during off-peak hours.
