VI Semester B.E. (Civil Engineering) Degree Examination, June/July 2017

(2K11 Scheme)
CE 606 : NUMERICAL METHODS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING (Elective – I)
Time : 3 Hours Max. Marks : 100

Instructions : i) Answer any five full questions.

ii) Assume any missing data suitably.

1. a) Solve by Cramer’s rule. 10

2x – y + 3z = 8
–x + 2y + z = 4
3x + y – 4z = 0

b) Solve the given system of equations using factorisation method. 10

3x + 2y – z = 4
2x + 4y + 2z = 8
–x + 2y + 4z = 5

2. a) Explain the steps in Matrix Inversion Method. 10

b) Solve the following set of equations using Gauss-Seidel method. 10
x1 + 8x2 + x3 = 10
x1 + x2 + 7x3 = 9
9x1 + x2 + x3 = 11

3. a) Find the value of ! # by Newton-Raphson’s method. 10

b) Solve the equation by Regula-Falsi method 10
x3 – 9x + 1 = 0

4. a) Solve the initial value problem, given the boundary condition y(0) = 0, x0 = 0.

5. A simply supported beam AB of span 12 m supports a load of zero intensity at

left support. Linearly varying to 20 kN/m at right support. Evaluate the area of the
moment diagram due to loading on the beam. Assume an interval of 1 m. Solve
by both Trapezoidal and Simpson’s rules. 20

6. A beam of length 16 m with uniform EI is supported. Freely at its ends. The beam
carries UDL of intensity 20 kN/m over its entire span. Determine the maximum
slope and maximum deflection using four segments and adopting Newmark’s
method. 20

7. a) Explain central differences. 6

b) Transform the boundary value problem 14

O ! O O N

y(0) = 0 and y(1) = 100

into a corresponding approximate finite difference equation and hence solve it
assuming a step size of h = 0.25.

8. A cantilever of length 10 m supports a UDL of 16 kN/m over its entire span.

Estimate the deflections at every quarter span points. 20
