Audits and performance monitoring


A system is in place to monitor the effectiveness of the WHSSMS and to implement
improvement actions. This is important to ensure that external validation of WHS procedures
is occurring.
Measures could include:
 audits/reviews are completed to schedule.
 required training (including refresher training) for audit/review roles to schedule
 audits/reviews address process and implementation
 results are reported to management via defined mechanism.
 Actions from audits, reviews and monitoring relating to WHSMS are completed to
schedule to ensure system is continuously improved.

Training and competence: A system is in place to ensure employees have necessary skills
and knowledge to effectively do their job. This is of vital importance to ensure that all staff
have WHS skills and knowledge.
Measures could include:
 required training completed to schedule
 reduction in number of incidents related to inadequate/insufficient training
 positive findings from survey or tests on competency and knowledge

Procedures: A system is in place for the development, implementation and review and
revision of effective operating and maintenance procedures. Procedures are key to ensuring
that all staff follow procedures at all times and consistently.
Measures could include:
 procedures issued and reviewed and revised to schedule
 number of procedures current and available on staff intranet.
 reduction in number of incidents with cause(s) relating to inadequate procedures

Emergency preparedness or response: A system is in place for responding to emergency


situations including development of plan, its implementation and post-emergency clean-up
and recovery. Vital to ensuring that appropriate action is taken in the event of an emergency.
Measures could include:
 Emergency exercises completed to schedule
 Required training (including refresher training) for specific roles in emergency
completed to schedule
 Emergency equipment tested to schedule and is capable of achieving anticipated
performance
