Pneumatics: Direct and Indirect Control

NAME: TERM/SY:
SUBJECT/SECTION: INSTRUCTOR:

General Instructions:

1. Prepare all the components needed for the activity and build the circuit based on
the given diagram
2. Make sure that the energy supply is turned off before/while installing and
disconnecting of all devices.
3. Follow the proper procedure in disconnecting tubes/hoses.
4. Every laboratory activity must be detached from the workbook.
5. Estimated completion time: 45 minutes

Objectives:

1. To identify, differentiate and know the use of several pneumatic components

2. To read and understand pneumatic diagrams.
3. To visualize the role of pneumatics in Mechatronics and industrial automation.

Components/Devices/Equipment Needed:
Part I.
Single acting cylinder
3/2 WV (Single pilot)
Pushbutton switch (3/2 WV, Normally Closed)
Pushbutton switch (3/2 WV, Normally Open)
Part II.
Double Acting Cylinder
5/2 WV (Single and Double Pilot)
2- Pushbutton switch (3/2 WV, Normally Closed)
on/off switch (5/2 WV), Roller/Limit Switch (3/2 WV, Normally Closed)

Questions:

1. What is the function of Single Acting Cylinder?

2. What will happen to the cylinder if we used a 3/2 WV, Normally Open switch?
3. How can we use a 5/2 way processing valve to Single Acting Cylinder?
4. Give the difference between direct and indirect control.

Using Double Pilot 5/2 Way Valve

Questions:

1. What is a Double Acting Cylinder?

Pneumatic actuators that employ compressed air to move in both extension

and retraction are called double acting cylinders. It is appropriate for applications
needing continuous and controlled bi-directional movement because it does not
depend on a spring for return motion.

2. What is the difference between single pilot and double pilot 5/2 way valve?

When the pilot port receives a pneumatic signal, the single pilot valve
changes states. Removing the signal causes it to automatically return to its initial
state. To change states, a double pilot valve needs two different pneumatic
signals. It has latching capability, meaning it keeps its position even when the
signal is cut off.
3. In Figure 1.3, what will happen if the pushbutton is pressed and released?

The double-acting cylinder will extend when the pushbutton is pressed,

sending a pneumatic signal to the valve. The cylinder will retract and the valve will
revert to its initial position when the button is released.

4. In Figure 1.4, if the tubings of ports 4 and 2 are interchanged, what will happen to
the system?

The cylinder will move in the other direction if the tubings of ports 4 and 2
are switched. When instructed to retract, it will do so instead, and when
instructed to extend, it will extend.

5. In Figure 1.5, if we change switch S2 to roller, what will happen if switch S1 is

pressed and released?

By switching S2 to a roller switch, the system becomes semi-automatic.

Pressing S1 will cause the cylinder to lengthen. Depending on how the system is
configured, the roller switch will gauge the position of the cylinder and open the
valve to start retraction or other predetermined operations.

Conlusion:

Through the use of double-acting cylinders, this experiment educated students

about pneumatic control systems. In the analysis of direct and indirect control methods,
they found that while indirect control provides greater flexibility over longer distances,
direct control is straightforward but distance-limited. Pneumatic circuits were better
understood thanks to the experiment, which also discussed the functions of 3/2 and 5/2
way valves and the distinctions between normally open and normally closed
arrangements.
