2. (a)A lamp is connected in series with an inductor and an AC source .What happens to the
brightness of a lamp if a key is plugged on and an iron is inserted inside the inductor?
(b) A vertical rectangular coil of sides 5cm by 2cm has 10 turns and carries a current of
2A. Calculate the torque on the coil when it is placed in a uniform horizontal magnetic
field of 0.1T with its plane.
(i) Parallel to the field
(ii) Perpendicular to the field
(iii) 600 to the field
(c )Describe the factors which determine the magnitude and direction of force
experienced by a current carrying conductor in a magnetic field.
(d) What is the maximum torque on a 400turns circular coil of radius 0.75 cm that
Carrying a current of 1.6mA and resides in a uniform magnetic field of 0.25 T?
3. (a)Explain four factor that affect the sensitivity of galvanometer.
(b)A moving galvanometer is suspended by the hair spring of torsional constant 9x10-6
NM per degree. If the current of 52mA is raised through the coil of 0.02m2 having 15
number of turn and the radial field of 0.03T. calculate the defection of the coil
(c)Draw an hysteresis loop for a soft iron and then indicate retentivity and coercivity
(d)Explain at least four components of earth’s magnetic field then show the relationship
between the main components.

5. (a)Derive the formula for the torque acting in rectangular current carrying coil in
magnetic field
(b)Derive the expression for the magnetic flux density B for a circular coil at the centre.
(c)An electron with charge e and mass m is initially projected with speed v at right angles
to a uniform magnetic field B,
(i)Explain why the path of the electron is circular
(ii)Show that the the time to describe one complete circle is independent of the speed of
the electron.
6. (a) A coil of 100 turn is linked by a magnetic flux of 2mWb. If this flux is revered in a
time of 2minute, calculate the average e.m.f induced in the coil.
(b) A straight wire of a length 50cm and the resistance of 10Ω moves side ways with the
velocity of 15m/s at right angle to the flux density 2 X10-5 T. calculate
(i)Induced E.M.F (ii) induced current.
7. Explain the following phenomenon by giving reason(s) per each statement
(a)Increasing the current sensitivity is not necessarily increase its voltage sensitivity
(b)Galvanometer cannot used as such to measure the current in a given circuit
(c)No force is experienced by a stationary charge in a magnetic field
(d)Why cores of a transformer is laminated
(e)No two magnetic lines of force intersect each other
(f)Why core of electromagnet made of ferromagnetic materials?
(g)For converting a galvanometer into an ammeter a shunt of small resistance value is
used in parallel where as in the case of a voltmeter a resistance of large value is used in
series .why
(h)The electric field is defined as the electric force per unit charge. Explain why the
magnetic field cannot be defined as the magnetic force per unit charge.
8. (a)In Bohr’s model of hydrogen atom, the electron circulates around nucleus on a path of
radius 0.053𝑛𝑚at a frequency of 6.8 𝑥1015 𝑟𝑒𝑣/𝑠. Calculate the magnetic field at the
centre of the orbit. What is the effective dipole moment?
(b) Show that the magnetic flux density at any point on the axis of a plane circular coil is
𝜇0𝑁𝐼𝑎2
given by 𝐵 = 2(𝑎2 + 𝑥 2 )3⁄

(c) Two moving coil galvanometer are identical in all aspects except that one has a coil of
100 turns and resistance of 20𝛺and the other coil has 200turns and resistance of 50𝛺.
Compare
(i) Their current sensitivities
(ii) Their voltage sensitivities
(iii) Their deflections when joined in series to a source of constant 𝑒. 𝑚. 𝑓 of internal
resistance 25𝛺
