MOANA 2

Written by
Jared Bush & Dana Ledoux Miller
1.

A BEAUTIFUL Oceanian chant echoes as fireworks explode over

the shimmering water around the DISNEY CASTLE. As we
transition to the WDAS bumper, the chorus continues to ring
out, and we... SMASH TO OPENING TITLES OVER BLACK:

“MOANA 2”

SEQ. 102.0 - “MOANA OF MOTUNUI”

EXT. SANDY ATOLL - SHORE - DAWN

Push through the TITLE CARD to track across the vibrant ocean
toward an island we’ve never seen before as...

A SMALL SHELL washes up on the shore. Two curious eyes peer

cautiously out -- it’s a HERMIT CRAB! The eyes look around --
what is this strange place? It spots a NEW, BIGGER SHELL...
intriguing, albeit a little intimidating... but before it can
give the shell a closer look... WHOOSH... a pair of feet --
on the move -- hit the sand behind it... scaring the crab
back into its old shell.

EXT. DESERTED ISLAND - MOMENTS LATER

Those same FEET CRASH THROUGH the jungle floor. We catch

glimpses of a body... hands, limbs, moving with deft
precision... on the run... But from what?

Whoever this is breaks through the dense jungle reaching a

wide and deep ravine, LAUNCHING across it, landing on the
rocky outcropping on the other side, before turning to reveal
it’s... MOANA, our hero (3 years older, bolder, stronger).
Moana takes a beat to catch her breath, glancing just as that
beast chasing her... SUDDENLY flops through the foliage
revealing:

PUA! Wait... That’s who was making the “ferocious grunts”?

Yes... but only because the chunky little porker is out of
shape and sucking air.

MOANA
Almost there, just an easy little
hop. Kinda.

Pua looks at Moana pleadingly. Help. Please. Moana considers--

JUMP TO: Pua, slung over Moana’s back, as she climbs a steep
cliff face. A pebble breaks free as Moana grabs for a hand
hold -- it skitters down below. Pua tracks the tiny rock,
terror growing, as it falls. Down. Down.
2.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Hey, you wanted to come this time.
(reaching higher)
Just a littttllle... (higher)

Moana lunges, swings up and triumphantly arrives on the peak

to find... HEIHEI ALREADY THERE. Cluck. He pecks her nose.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Heihei? How?

Heihei just stares at her. Moana looks around, revealing...

she’s on the highest peak of a SMALL, DESERTED ISLAND.

Moana reaches for her necklace and pulls out a small SHELL,
which she places on the mountain. Her own small tradition...
Then she takes a CONCH SHELL from her belt and BAWOOOO! The
trumpeting sound rings out...

We GO WIDE, the tone echoing across the island... and the

gorgeous ocean surrounding it - clear to the horizon in every
direction... As the water shimmers... Moana listens...

MOANA (CONT’D)
Hear anything?

She glances back at Pua who GRUNTS, Nope. Moana gives a

playful commiserating look back, yeah me either. Moana SIGHS,
she really thought she’d hear a response this time.

MOANA (CONT’D)
There’s gotta be other people out
here. Other villages.
(hopeful, determined)
And one day, someone’s gonna
ans...wer...

But Moana trails off as she hears... a distant CONCH. What?!

Moana’s eyes go wide, has she done it?! But then she looks
over to realize... it’s just Heihei choking on a SHELL.
Heihei spits it up. Moana stares at him.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Never change.

Heihei stares blankly, then steps absently off the

cantilevered rock he and Pua are standing on, shifting the
balance, sending it off the cliff!

MOANA (CONT’D)
Whoa -- whoa -- whoa!

Moana lunges for Pua and catches him. Phew! But then Heihei
hops on her head and his weight sends all three tumbling!
3.

EXT. DESERTED ISLAND - NOOK - CONTINUOUS

Moana hits the jungle canopy. Thud. Oof. Her oar bounces off
her head before she crash lands in a secluded nook. She looks
up... realizes she’s looking at... a small HUMAN-MADE altar,
ancient but preserved dense foliage. Light splinters through
the leaves, casting golden rays as if her ancestors have
brought Moana to this place... to this moment...

Cluck! HEIHEI POPS UP from behind the altar straight into

Moana’s line of vision with... a SMALL STRANGE PIECE OF
POTTERY stuck on his head.

Moana stares at it... then plucks it off Heihei’s head. WHOA.

Moana recognizes this immediately... her eyes widening as if
she’s found the holy grail! She rubs the dirt off the pottery
to reveal the image:

AN ISLAND, with a CONSTELLATION ABOVE IT and PEOPLE BELOW IT.

As the etching is revealed, our ANCESTRAL CHORAL MOTIF swells

and there’s a spiritual rustling of the leaves... augmenting
the emotion on Moana’s face and the sparkle of welling tears
in her eyes which are already telling us: this is a big deal.

MOANA
Heihei!

Pua looks scoldingly at Heihei, Now you’re gonna get it!

MOANA (CONT’D)
You sweet beautiful chicken! This
is amazing! Ahhh!

Pua looks at Moana irritated. Why does Heihei get the love?!
But Moana’s already racing off. A BEAT, then she comes back.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Whattya waiting for?! Let’s go
home!

As Moana races off again... our SONG BEGINS!

SEQ. 105.0 - “WE’RE BACK” - SONG

EXT. SANDY BEACH - MOMENTS LATER

Moana runs across the sand, spooking the hermit crab who’s
struggling with that NEW SHELL, tipping over as he adjusts to
the weight of it. As Moana’s foot hits the water, the ocean
magically spirals around her footsteps!
4.

EXT. OPEN OCEAN - SUNSET

As the opening percussion kicks in... We race just above the

water 100 miles an hour... until we find MOANA’s CANOE... we
TRACK ALONG THE BOW... DAY PASSES INTO NIGHT as we find Moana
in complete control, a master with absolute confidence.

UNDERWATER: Fish swirl around the boat as it cuts the water

above us... on a straight trajectory.

As the wind blows in her hair... FISH jump alongside the

canoe. The sun threatens to sneak above the horizon, a
FRIGATE BIRD soars overhead...

Moana watches it fly toward the horizon... and squints... a

smile of anticipation sneaking across her face - she wakes
Pua - who startles, embarrassed to be caught sleeping.

MOANA
We’re back!

Heart racing, Moana climbs the mast, higher and higher, warm
sunlight catching her face as she reaches the top, and there,
past the swells, she sees HER ISLAND rising in the distance!

MOANA (CONT’D)
SAILING FROM THE HORIZON,
BACK TO OUR HOME OUR ISLAND.
COMING INTO OUR VIEW
BENEATH THE MORNING SKY.

Moana swings from one side of the canoe to the other, as she
picks up speed. She lands on the deck... Heihei tries to walk
off the canoe but is rescued by our old friend, THE OCEAN,
who deposits Heihei in Moana’s arms:

MOANA (CONT’D)
WE’RE BACK!
FROM NEW SHORES WE’VE BEEN EXPLORING,
RETURNING TO TELL OUR STORY.
CONNECTED WITH BOTH THE LAND AND SEA.

Pua runs to the front of the canoe, lets the wind flap his
big floppy pig ears. Cool! Until a pod of dolphins spook him!

MOANA (CONT’D)
OH FINALLY! WE’RE BACK!
TO WHO WE’RE MEANT TO BE.

Moana pulls another sail and it’s like a turbo boost.

MOANA (CONT’D)
WHO I’M MEANT TO BE.
VOYAGING THE SEA!
5.

As she rockets toward Motunui, CUT TO:

EXT. MOTUNUI - SAME TIME

Motunui is better than it’s ever been. Kites fly in the air
as... VILLAGERS happily start their day. CHIEF TUI and SINA
lead the others. They too have changed since we last saw them
- they’re lighter and more carefree, even with each other.

VILLAGERS
WE’RE BACK!

SINA & CHIEF TUI

THE VILLAGE IS LUSH AND THRIVING.

KIDS
WEAVING NEW KITES FOR FLYING.

A KID gets pulled off the ground by a gust of wind. Oh no!

Sina tugs him back down to earth before he can fly away.

KID
(a little freaked)
Whoa!

VILLAGERS & TUI & SINA

BUILDING NEW HOMES AND FAMILIES,
OUR PEOPLE JUST KEEP EXPANDING!

ALL
WE’RE BACK!

Tui gestures as a NEW FALE is completed.

CHIEF TUI
LET’S PULL THE ROOF HIGHER!

A GRUMPY OLD FARMER, KELE, tills the field.

KELE
I CAN’T WAIT TILL I RETIRE.

STORY-TELLING FALE: Sina honors a memorial for GRAMMA TALA.

SINA
THE ANCESTORS WOULD BE PROUD,
WHAT WAS ONCE WAS LOST HAS BEEN FOUND.

ON THE SHORE: Tui happily sees Moana’s canoe in the distance

and runs toward the shore.
6.

CHIEF TUI & FISHERMAN

FINALLY WE’RE BACK!
TO WHO WE’RE MEANT TO BE.

IN THE FIELDS: Farmers happily continue to tend their crops.

FARMERS
WHO WE’RE MEANT TO BE!

KELE
UGH, DO YOU HAVE TO SING?

FARMERS
YES WE HAVE TO SING!

OUTSIDE THE STORY-TELLING FALE: MONI (Motunui’s historian,

handsome, strong), places a BIG STONE on the ground so he can
sit and tell stories to a group of kids. Front and center is
a little girl, SIMEA (3, more on her later)...

MONI
HEY KIDS!
GATHER ROUND IF YOU WANNA HEAR ABOUT,
THE GREATEST WAYFINDER OF ALL TIME,
A LIVING LEGEND
AND SHE’S BESTIES WITH A DEMIGOD.
LIKE, SUPER BESTIES!

Moni’s SIAPOS tell the story of the following lyrics:

MONI (CONT’D)
TOGETHER THEY SAVED OUR LAND AND
THEN LIKE TOTALLY SET US FREE!
WHAT’S NEXT WE’LL SEE!
HOW MUCH BETTER COULD IT BE? UNLESS...
MAUI WAS ALSO FRIENDS WITH ME.

Moni shows a SIAPO drawing: of Maui and MONI! BFFs for life!

SUPER SASSY VILLAGE KID

Yeah, right.

Simea rolls her eyes in agreement. Before Moni can respond,

the kids see Moana’s canoe on the horizon. Simea leads the
charge to greet her, knocking Moni over.

EXCITED KID
LOOK!! SHE’S COMING!!!

MONI
WELCOME OUR BRAVE MOANA

KIDS
I WONDER WHAT SHE BROUGHT US?
7.

IN THE “GARAGE”: LOTO (16, genius, peculiar engineer), grabs

some tools and heads toward shore.

LOTO
THE NEW CANOE NEEDS INSPECTING.
THERE’S ALWAYS SOMETHING TO FIX ON BOARD!

DANCERS & VILLAGERS

THE VILLAGE BELIEVES IN HER,
THE VILLAGE BELIEVES!

EXT. OPEN OCEAN BEYOND THE REEF - SAME TIME

As Moana nears the breakers on the reef, Tui awkwardly crests

the waves in his own canoe to greet her.

CHIEF TUI
I made it past the reef!
(dorky dad bobble)
Race “the chief” to shore?

MOANA
(grins)
Aw, Dad, it’s never much of a race.

Tui huffs, delighted, and turns his canoe. Moana barely

adjusts her oar and they race toward the lagoon!

Villagers on land and sea see what’s going on, they cheer,
race to the water’s edge. EVERYONE streaming to the shore.
Moana and Tui rip past other boats.

KIDS AND MOTHERS

THE LIFE IS BACK IN THE WATER!

Three TWEEN girls, THE MOANABES, dressed in Moana cosplay are

racing out on their canoe to greet Moana - they’re not great
at this, but they’re trying!

VILLAGERS
OUR PEOPLE HAVE COME OUT STRONGER

CHIEF TUI
THE VOYAGING PAST WE HONOR.
THANKS TO OUR DAUGHTER WOAH!

As they hurtle the reef, Moana splashes Tui.

MOANA
SAILING FROM THE HORIZON
CAN’T WAIT TO REACH MY ISLAND
THE HOME I’VE BEEN MISSING
AND THE LIFE I’M MEANT TO LEAD.
8.

VILLAGERS
WE’RE BACK!

VILLAGERS (CONT’D)
MOANA, SHE POINTS US TO THE
FUTURE OF MOTUNUI,
CONNECTED WITH BOTH THE LAND AND SEA.

TWO YOUNG DUDES drop from coconut trees to join the last of
their trio (TEENAGE OILY BOYS) as they rush along with the
other VILLAGERS to the shore - everyone is there...

MOANA
OH FINALLY WE’RE BACK
TO WHO WE’RE MEANT TO BE.
OF THE LAND AND SEA.

VILLAGERS
FINALLY WE’RE BACK!

Moana’s boat races up onto the sand and she jumps off and
lands on the shore.

MOANA
TO WHO WE’RE MEANT TO BE!

The villagers gather around, cheering, happy that she belts

out the last note and we go wide to meet the entire island.

SEQ. 110.0 - “MEET MOTUNUI”

EXT. MOTUNUI BEACH - A FEW MINUTES LATER

PUA struggles to push a HEAVY BASKET of FRUIT, but he’s

helped by Moana who hands the basket to a DUBIOUS KELE.

MOANA
New fruit! You’re gonna love it.

KELE
I don’t love anything.
(startling, as Heihei pops
out of the basket)
Aghh. I’m gonna eat this chicken!

Moana turns to unload more items when she comes face-to-face

with the excited Moanabes - dressed just like her.

MOANA
(Re: their outfits)
Mmmm, new look.
9.

MOANABE #2
Yup! And we even got our own Pua!

She lifts up... BUA, a bizarro version of Pua... plumper and

meaner. His oink is weird as hell. Moana clocks this, yikes!

MOANA
Oh...

MOANABES #1
His name is Bua!

Pua peeks around Moana, intimidated. But suddenly, commotion

from the crowd splits her attention as Loto barrels through.

LOTO
Coming through, coming through!

MOANABES
Hey! / watch it!

As Loto pushes past the Moanabes, Moana shoots them an

apologetic look - before turning and racing after her.

LOTO
New canoe, how’d she hold up? Lay
it on me.

MOANA
I mean, it takes a bit to rotate
the sail, but -

LOTO
(bulldozing)
Got it!

MOANA
No no no. Loto, you don’t-

LOTO
Move!

Loto swings her adze at the MAST and barely misses taking the
head off a VILLAGER - close call - who SQUEAKS, realizing she
sliced off his TOP KNOT!

MOANA
Oh - that -- Yikes --

Moana shoots the nearly decapitated dude a wary thumbs up.

You okay, bro? He’s a little dazed... but you know, alive.
But a spray of water to the face, pulls Moana’s attention.
10.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Whooo! Hey!

It’s... TUI, who just whipped his WET HAIR at her, more
playful than we’ve ever seen him. He laughs.

CHIEF TUI
It’s called a hair whip.
(gesturing)
Learned it from those guys.

He throws a quick glance at the Oily Boys looking “cool,”

whipping their hair. Then back to Moana.

CHIEF TUI (CONT’D)

So, how’d it go this time?

Moana plays coy, but she can’t help herself. She’s excited.
Tui puts the pieces together, realizing --

CHIEF TUI (CONT’D)

You found something!

As Moana darts off excitedly --

JUMP TO: MOANA’S HAND reaches into a BASKET and pulls out:
the POTTERY, holding it up for Tui. Whoa. This is huge!

MOANA
It was in a clearing - which I
found with a little help from...
Heihei - but - this isn’t from our
village - I don’t even know what
it’s made of, but it’s proof!
(looks to horizon)
There are other people out there. I
don’t know why we haven’t found
them yet, but Dad...
(points to island/stars)
That island... I think that’s where
they’re gonna be. I just have to
figure out how to find those stars.

Suddenly a WEIRD ASS SCREAM interrupts the moment, startling

Tui who bobbles the pottery, before Moana steadies it. THEY
BOTH TURN TO LOOK at a commotion amongst the crowd as a force
of nature pushes through:

SIMEA (O.S.)
MOANA!!!

MOANA
Little sis!
11.

Simea! Moana’s little sister, bombastic and cute, crashes

through the crowd like a bulldozer, pushing past Kele --
causing him to spill the basket!

SIMEA (O.S.)
BIG SIS!

MOANA
LITTLE SIS!

SIMEA
BIG SIS!!!!!!!
Moana scoops Simea up in a hug.

SIMEA (CONT’D)
You were gone forever!

MOANA
It was three days, but I missed you
every --

SIMEA
(grabbing Moana’s face)
What did you bring me?

MOANA
Bring you?

SIMEA
You said you’d bring me a present.

MOANA
(faux-confused)
Huh... well, let me see...

Moana makes a big deal about revealing this strange object.

SO PUMPED to see Simea’s reaction! Only for Simea to be...
completely unimpressed.

SIMEA
Whoa! What’s it do?

MOANA
What’s it -- !?!?

Moana considers... Oh, she’ll SHOW her ‘what it does!’

SEQ. 112.0 - “MISSED CONNECTIONS”

12.

INT. CAVERN OF THE ANCESTORS - A LITTLE LATER

Moana covers Simea’s eyes as she guides the excited tot into
the cavern... Sunlight cuts through from above.

SIMEA
Where are we going?

Simea can’t wait a second longer, she peeks through her

fingers and... WHOA. All the canoes have been cleared out,
except for Moana’s old canoe and the ANCESTRAL DRUM (from the
first film). Simea looks around in awe. Touching everything.

SIMEA (CONT’D)
Whoa...

MOANA
This is a place of our ancestors.
(as Simea explores)
Where I learned our people are
voyagers...

Moana watches Simea take it all in... remembering how it felt

her first time.

MOANA (CONT’D)
...where Gramma showed me who we are.

SIMEA
(lighting up)
Gramma...
(excited, she knows this)
She said to grab Maui by the ear
and tell him “I am Moana of
Motunui, you will board my boat and
restore the heart of Te Fiti.”

Simea hops onto the canoe and ‘performs’ the whole speech
with such passion, Moana has to fight to keep from laughing.

MOANA
Pretty good.

SIMEA
(humble brag)
Yeah.

Simea plops down beside Moana on the canoe.

SIMEA (CONT’D)
How long did it take?

MOANA
Uh... few weeks.
13.

SIMEA
WEEKS?! That’s longer than forever.

She falls dramatically into Moana’s arms.

MOANA
I know. But it was important...

Moana and Simea playfully walk toward the giant wall of

petroglyphs...

MOANA (CONT’D)
And if I hadn’t gone... I never
would’ve become a wayfinder.
(look to Vasa petroglyph)
Like our ancient chiefs. Like the
last great navigator, Tautai Vasa.

Moana looks wistfully at the petroglyph of VASA as we PUSH IN

on the image... before turning back to Simea to take in the
whole wall -- an ancient depiction of a familiar story: Te
Fiti in her island form with her SPIRAL HEART -- in the
center of the ocean surrounded by canoes and islands.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Before Maui stole Te Fiti’s
heart... and we stopped voyaging...
Tautai Vasa wanted to connect our
island to all the people of the
entire ocean... because together,
what we can do, how far we all can
go... it’s endless.
(then)
And now that I’m a wayfinder, it’s
my job to continue what he
started...

Moana holds the artifact for Simea to see and understand.

MOANA (CONT’D)
And this... this is my first clue
how...

Simea takes this in... this clearly means a lot to Moana,

but... she’s three! So... her priorities are different:

SIMEA
You should make Maui go, so you can
stay with ME!
14.

MOANA
(giggling, into POST-LAP)
Well, Maui is out DEMI-GODDING, but
if he ever shows up, you grab him
by the ear and tell him that.

As the girls giggle playfully, we PUSH TOWARD the waterfall

of the cavern, the rushing water TAKING US TO:

SEQ. 101.0 - “IT’S ME, IT’S MAUI”

EXT. OPEN OCEAN - JUST PAST GOLDEN HOUR

MATCH CUT: a DOWN SHOT, skimming across the surface of the

ocean, water rushing past until... SCRAAAAAAAAW! A GIANT
HAWK, rockets past, a trail of white water in his wake as he
races toward... a GROWING FOG BANK HE DISAPPEARS WITHIN!

MAUI (O.S.)
Chee hoo!

A beat, then we see a FLASH and hear a NOISE within. A single

BOOM. Foreboding. Like an ENORMOUS GATE OF HELL CLOSING. A
SHOCKWAVE ripples back out of the fog past camera, and the
swirling fog TRANSITIONS US TO:

INT. UNKNOWN REALM OF THE GODS - TIME UNKNOWN

Misty fog that moves unnaturally in a massive, forbidding

chamber, shifting and reforming around a HUGE, GLOWING PEARL-
LIKE ORB that tells us this is not a place meant for humans.

Then, from within the FOG... a GLOW... Maui’s fishhook. The

fog starts to clear, revealing: MAUI, demigod of the wind and
sea. He steps forward, full bad-ass, hook in hand. He takes
in the glowing pearl... IS THIS WHAT HE’S HERE FOR...?

THWIP THWIP THWIP... behind Maui the sound of a bat flapping

its wings echoes across the chamber -- reminds him where he
is and the DANGER that could be lurking here. He turns away
from the pearl... a predator on the prowl as he does a slow
360... looking for something... or someone. Music swells,
Maui grips his hook, tension building...

MAUI
(unexpectedly falsetto)
Yoo-hoo?

Mini-Maui, shakes his head, like “that’s your tough intro?”

Maui ignores Mini-Maui.
15.

Stepping out across the “stone” floor, the fog clearing with
each step to reveal ancient PETROGLYPHS carved in a familiar
shape: the silhouette of the same island Moana found on the
ancient pottery.

MAUI (CONT’D)
(calling out)
I’m not here to cause trouble. Just
a super-chiseled demigod passing
through. Now open the portal to the
island and I’ll be on my way.

MATANGI (O.S.)
And why would I break the rules for
you when you’ve already caused my
boss so much trouble?

MAUI
Hey, Nalo started it.

MATANGI (O.S.)
(I know that line...)
And you’ll finish it? Team up with
your --
(suddenly whispering right
in Maui’s ear)
-- precious human again...?

Maui reacts, swinging his hook defensively... but she’s

already gone. Who IS she?

MAUI
(covering well)
Team --? You mean the girl with the
canoe and the goofy little chicken?
We weren’t a team. I just used her to
get my hook.

Mini-Maui gives Maui a look like “what??” and smacks him.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Ow.
(he smacks Mini-Maui back,
but that hurts too)
Ow!

A swirling scoffing laugh tells us Matangi isn’t buying it.

Matangi swirls the fog, revealing more of the floor, which
reveals a MASSIVE PETROGLYPH of a SHADOWY GOD LOOMING OVER
THE PETROGLYPH OF MOTUFETŪ.
16.

MATANGI (O.S.)
Nalo is a god, Maui. If you try to
reconnect the people of the ocean
he will destroy you. And then he’ll
destroy her too.

MAUI
(darkening)
This is between him and me. Moana
has nothing to do with it.

A beat... then SUDDENLY, chaos. Hundreds of BAT WINGS flap in

the mist - revealing - a corporeal silhouette, with purple
eyes that seem to look right through Maui... MATANGI. Freaky.

She puts a sharp fingernail right on Maui’s chest... on the

MOANA TATTOO he earned at the end of the FIRST FILM.

MATANGI (O.S.)
You made her a wayfinder, Maui, so
now she has everything to do with
it.

ON MAUI as he grips his hook, which starts to glow... his

nostrils flare... HE WILL NOT LET MOANA BE THREATENED. As he
launches up to attack... Matangi explodes into HUNDREDS of
BATS and we pull BACK far enough to see the PETROGLYPH OF
MOTUFETŪ on the stone floor before we SMASH TO:

SEQ. 115.0 - “FEAST FOR A CHIEF”

EXT. VILLAGE - EVENING

DRUMS COME IN HOT. VILLAGE WOMEN dancing. Moana, holding the

pottery as she enters the party with Sina. Sina hugs her, so
proud of her daughter, as another VILLAGER puts a lei on
Moana’s head. Moni rushes over to gawk.

MONI
Mystery island... cool!

LOTO
(pops up, with adze)
I’d like a sample of that --

Moana yanks it out of Loto’s destructive reach as the DANCING

KID (from the first movie, but 3 years older!) crosses in
front of her doing some weird little dance moves.

DANCING KID
(sing-song but cool)
Moana’s gonna find peeeeple.
17.

He’s joined by the Moanabes... who CRUSH... doing the same

dance we saw him do in the first film. Moana pauses long
enough to surprise them by serving her own moves back -- They
are all stunned as Moana winks.

Simea - in Sina’s arms - mimics Moana’s last dance move.

Adorable as hell... Moana laughs and turns to look at the
FEAST - still untouched. Why is no one eating yet?

MOANA
Well, eat up! We don’t want the
pork getting cold.

Pua groans. Moana looks down to see Pua AND Bua... as Pua
stares at her with big, pleading eyes -- Bua grunts,
offended.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Ooooo, gotta stop doing that.

The glow of a torch hits Moana as Tui steps up beside her.

CHIEF TUI
Moana, tonight isn’t just a feast...

A BEAT, as the mood changes. The drumbeat falls away. Sina

and Simea join them... and Moana looks to see the whole
community gathering around... lighting torches expectantly...
including the Moanabes who drag along Bua. Something big is
happening, but Moana isn’t sure what.

CHIEF TUI (CONT’D)

Long ago, there was a title given
to the last great wayfinder with
dreams as big as yours... a sacred
title, more than a chief: a Tautai.
Leader, connector of the entire
sea.

Tui turns to Moana, his proud emotion building.

CHIEF TUI (CONT’D)

My dear, would you honor us
tonight, by accepting this title,
our people’s first Tautai in a
thousand years...
(then, tearing)
And show us all just how far we’ll
go.

A beat as Tui’s words land. Moana is moved by the faith her

people have in her... tears threaten to spill over as she
smiles big, accepting the title and hopeful that she’ll live
up to it!
18.

SEQ. 120.0 - “CALL FROM THE ANCESTORS”

INT. FALE VAI - SHORE - A LITTLE LATER

The whole village is gathered around. Moana watches as the

‘ava is prepared. Squeezing the liquid from the fibers.

Moana looks to her people... she feels the immense love and
responsibility of this ceremony. It’s a proud moment...

Outside, the ocean waves tenderly crash along the shore.

BUT... As if summoned, the WIND PICKS UP, rippling through
the crowd... Marking a change in the weather... not enough
for alarm... but enough for Sina to notice the shifting
atmosphere.

CHIEF TUI
Tonight we drink from our ancestors’
bowl, as Tautai Vasa once did, to
bestow this title... on you... to
connect to our past, our present and
the future that lies beyond.

Chief Tui pours some of the ‘ava out of his bowl and onto the
dirt floor, an offering to the ancestors. He drinks the rest.

CHIEF TUI (CONT’D)

May the ancestors continue to guide
us.

Then it’s Moana’s turn. She accepts the cup from Moni and
looks at the faces of all the people she loves: Sina, Simea.

SIMEA
Biiiiig Sissss!

MOANA
(raising her cup)
I am honored to serve our people.
May the ancestors continue to guide
us.

As Moana lifts the cup, the ‘ava ripples... something strange

is happening. But before she can process... there is a
crackling all around the fale... And then -- CRACK!! A bolt
of lightning WHITES-OUT THE CEREMONY AND...

EXT. OPEN OCEAN - NIGHT - VISION

MOANA SNAPS AWAKE: the ground shifts beneath her as she

realizes she’s on an ANCIENT VOYAGING CANOE. On the SAIL: is
the same pattern from the pottery: island, stars, people.
19.

And at the bow: A WAYFINDER with a commanding presence. Moana

recognizes him immediately:

MOANA
(awed)
Tautai Vasa.

TAUTAI VASA, the same ancestor we saw forge new paths in the
first film -- is here on the canoe, leading a small crew
across the open ocean.

Moana watches as Vasa blows the conch. He waits, hears

nothing. He looks to the Constellation motif on the sail. The
same as the one Moana found on the pottery! Then Vasa turns
toward the MATCHING CONSTELLATION at the horizon, only in
reality... the ISLAND is missing...

TAUTAI VASA
(growing concern)
Motufetū... should be under the
stars...

As Moana steps forward, she sees Vasa is worried. Moana

follows Vasa’s gaze, just as the constellation is obscured by
an unnaturally growing lightning storm --

QUICK CUTS: Vasa shouts commands as they battle against a

WILD and UNPREDICTABLE STORM. VASA STRUGGLES TO FIND HIS WAY.

TAUTAI VASA (CONT’D)

(calling out to his crew)
Bind the sail! Lift the oar!

ON VASA: as a flash of PURPLE LIGHTNING draws his eye upward.

REVEALING a MONSTROUS STORM dominating the sky. For a brief
instant an ENRAGED FACE appears in the clouds, etched in
purple lightning.

THUNDER like no other BOOMS angrily... then --

WHAM! A wave hits them broadside and throws Moana from the
canoe --

MOANA IS THROWN OFF -- tumbling through sky and water before

she opens her eyes to see: she’s face-to-face with an
enormous ‘aumakua WHALE SHARK with glowing tatau patterns.
But just as Moana takes in this awe-inspiring moment, it
swims past her and Moana finds she’s...

On the SHORES OF MOTUNUI: But it’s empty. And overgrown as if

no one has lived here for a long time. What is happening?
20.

MOANA
(whispers, to herself)
Where are my... people...?

Then a voice, behind her:

TAUTAI VASA (O.S.)

(urgent)
Tautai Moana!

Moana spins and finds TAUTAI VASA, glowing in his ancestral

form, desperation in his eyes.

TAUTAI VASA (CONT’D)

This is your future if you cannot
find others, in isolation this is
how your story ends.

MOANA
(her own anxiety growing)
I don’t under... stand --

TAUTAI VASA
Returning Te Fiti’s heart was the
beginning, you must brave the
storm, reconnect our people, find
Motufetū.

MOANA
But I don’t know how to reach it...

TAUTAI VASA
A fire in the sky will guide you.

As Tautai Vasa starts toward the water... Moana, near frantic

for answers, follows after him --

MOANA
Wait... I don’t even know how far
it is...

TAUTAI VASA
Farther than I was able to go...
(as he swims away, O.S.)
Find Motufetū. Reconnect us all.

The weight of Vasa’s directive lands on Moana -- she still

has questions as Vasa transforms back to his ‘aumakua, whale
shark form, and swims away... guiding Moana’s eye toward...
MOTUFETŪ?!

The distinct shape of the island RISES impossibly a few

hundred yards from Motunui.
21.

As the Whale Shark reaches it, BIOLUMINESCENT CHANNELS GLOW

AROUND IT -- LIGHTING UP THE SEA AND MOTUNUI rocketing toward
Moana until the glare of the bioluminescence glow engulfs her
- brighter and brighter --

INT. FALE VAI - SNAP BACK TO REAL TIME

Kaboom! MOANA IS BLASTED BY LIGHTNING. Sina and Tui race

toward her.

CHIEF TUI
NO! MOANA!

SINA
Moana!

Moana wakes up with a deep inhale. She takes in her mom and
dad -- remembering with urgency what she’s just discovered --

MOANA
Motufetū, the island I have to find
is Motufetū.

SEQ. 125.0 - “WHAT’S IT MEAN?!”

INT. STORYTELLING FALE - MOMENTS LATER

A VERY OLD SIAPO unfurls with the silhouette of Motufetū.

MONI (O.S.)
Ok. Took some searching, but...

POP WIDE TO REVEAL: Moana leaning over the siapo, flanked by

her parents as they listen attentively to Moni, Motunui’s
storyteller...

MOANA
Motufetū...

CHIEF TUI
What... is it...?

Moni reveals another ancient siapo -- this one depicting

Motufetū at the center of 8 CHANNELS.

MONI
An ancient island... where the
channels of the ocean once came
together, connecting the people of
the entire sea.
22.

Moana, Sina and Tui react, understanding its importance.

MONI (CONT’D)
Until it was... lost... cursed...

MOANA
Cursed?

Moni reveals another siapo -- this with Nalo rising above

cursing the island (our “Nalo motif”) in siapo form.

MONI
(big bummer energy)
In a terrible storm... of a power-
hungry god... Nalo...

As Moana looks at the siapo, FLASHBACK TO:

The unnatural storm from her vision, the angry face of a GOD
etched by lightning in clouds: THIS IS NALO, God of Storms.

MONI (CONT’D)
Who believed he’d be stronger by
separating the people of the ocean,
to weaken us... end our story.

Moana reacts, remembering Vasa gave her that same warning.

MONI (CONT’D)
(more grounded)
Our ancestors believed reaching
Motufetū would break Nalo’s
curse... restore the channels. It’s
the only way to bring our people
together again.

MOANA
Or our story ends...

CHIEF TUI
We need to convene a council if --

Moana looks to Tui, seeing his concern, but before she can
respond... a brilliant light outside starts to glow the whole
fale. Outside, people gasp.

VILLAGER (O.S.)
CHIEF!!

SEQ. 127.0 - “CONSIDER THE COST”

23.

EXT. VILLAGE - MOMENTS LATER

Moana exits the fale and looks up to see... A COMET IN THE

SKY. It’s like an alien spaceship in the sky. Seeing it...
Moana remembers Vasa’s words.

MOANA
A fire in the sky...
(internal, concerned)
He wants me to follow it...

Tui, realizing the inevitability of what’s to come, starts to

worry. This is happening so fast.

CHIEF TUI
To new stars... it could take a
lifetime...
(then)
Tautai Vasa didn’t make it back at
all.

The thought of Moana leaving forever is unfathomable. Sina

takes Tui’s hand, trying to comfort.

SINA
It’s a call from the ancestors,
Tui...

CHIEF TUI
But if we never see her again...
I...

Before Moana can process this --

SIMEA (O.S.)
What do you mean, never see you
again?

Moana turns to see Simea has heard this whole thing.

MOANA
Simea -- no, I’m -- I mean, that’s -
-

SIMEA
I don’t want you to leave!

Simea runs off, Moana starts after her, but Tui beats her too
it. Moana watches them go, tears welling in her eyes, warring
emotions pulsing through her. She and Sina silhouetted by the
light of the comet.

MOANA
Mom...?
24.

Sina holds Moana’s hand, knowing how hard this is, because
it’s hard for her too.

MOANA (CONT’D)
...This.. it’s so fast... what
if...

SINA
(her heart breaking)
You’re Tautai now, Moana... for
some changes, we never feel
ready...

As that lands, Sina leaves Moana alone with her thoughts in

the glow of the comet as OUR SONG BEGINS.

SEQ. 153.0 - “BEYOND - (MOANA’S LAUNCH)” - SONG

Moana looks to the water... the comet glowing above.

MOANA
I KNOW THESE STARS ABOVE THE OCEAN
NOW NEW SKIES CALL ME BY NAME
AND SUDDENLY NOTHING FEELS THE SAME

The build grows...

MOANA (CONT’D)
I KNOW THE PATH THAT MUST BE CHOSEN
BUT THIS IS BIGGER THAN BEFORE
WINDS HAVE CHANGED,
TIDES TURN ME FAR AWAY FROM SHORE

Building again.

MOANA (CONT’D)
WHAT WAITS FOR ME
FOREVER FAR FROM HOME
FROM EVERYTHING
AND EVERYONE I’VE EVER KNOWN

MOANA (CONT’D)
WHAT LIES BEYOND?
UNDER SKIES I’VE NEVER SEEN
WILL I LOSE MYSELF BETWEEN
MY HOME AND WHAT’S UNKNOWN
IF I GO BEYOND
LEAVING ALL I LOVE BEHIND
WITH THE FUTURE OF OUR PEOPLE STILL TO FIND
CAN I GO BEYOND?
25.

Moana runs up to a fale and sees her dad inside talking to

council members. She watches them for a moment, then turns to
leave, grabbing a torch as the FIRE leads us to:

The cavern of the wayfinders. And the symbol of Tautai Vasa

etched in stone.

MOANA (CONT’D)
THERE IS DESTINY IN MOTION
AND IT’S ONLY JUST BEGUN
NOW WILL THIS LIFE I’VE WORKED SO
HARD FOR COME UNDONE?

Moana searches the cavern wall for answers to questions she

can’t even formulate. She looks out over the lagoon and sees:

Tautai Vasa, in his glowing ancestral form, pushing off on

his canoe toward the waterfall. He turns and nods for her to
follow... as he disappears...

MOANA (CONT’D)
THEY’RE CALLING ME
I MUST REPLY
BUT IF I LEAVE
HOW COULD I EVER SAY GOODBYE?

A wave crashes REVEALING: Moana on her canoe chasing after

Vasa across the vast ocean. Her island shrinking in the
distance as she sails toward Motufetū.

MOANA (CONT’D)
WHAT LIES BEYOND?
ON THE VAST UNCHARTED SEA
WILL I LOSE MYSELF BETWEEN
ALL THAT WE KNOW RIGHT HERE AND
WHAT’S OUT THERE
BEYOND...
LEAVING ALL I LOVE BEHIND
WITH THE FUTURE OF OUR PEOPLE STILL
TO FIND
WILL I GO BEYOND?

Moana sits with Simea, watching her sleep. Questioning how

she’ll leave this little girl for the unforeseen future.

MOANA (CONT’D)
IF I’M NOT HERE TO HOLD HER HAND...
WILL SHE GROW TO UNDERSTAND?

Moana sits at the shore... wrestling with her decision. A

glow appears in the lagoon... and ‘aumakua MANTA RAY.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Gramma!
26.

Moana rushes to the short to hug her.

GRAMMA TALA
I’LL ALWAYS BE RIGHT BESIDE YOU...
BUT PERHAPS YOU’RE MEANT FOR MORE..

JUMP FORWARD IN TIME: They dance on the lava rock. Moana

tries to keep up with Gramma Tala, but she’s out of sync.

GRAMMA TALA (CONT’D)

Oh, what are you so worried about?

MOANA
It’s not like last time.

GRAMMA TALA
(quirks a brow)
Last time you weren’t old enough to
understand all you could lose... or
learn.
(then)
But here we are... together still...
just a little different...

Tala leans into Moana pressing their foreheads together in a

hongi.

GRAMMA TALA (CONT’D)

I can’t see where your story
leads... but we never stop choosing
who we are.

Moana watches Tala swim away as a manta ray. Above her... the
comet burns brighter. Moana knows she must make the hard
choice, and she must make it now. Moana runs back to her
parents, they can see she’s decided to go and they’re
proud... even though they fear how hard it will be.

MOANA (PRELAP)
This is bigger than Motunui, bigger
than us... so I will sail to this
new sky to reconnect the people of
the entire ocean... and then...
(meaning the people of the
ocean...)
We will return... together.

Moana addresses the village from the main fale. The crowd
CHEERS as we rise above them to the altar of chiefs, high
above in the mountains of Motunui.

CUT AHEAD: to Moana climbing the mountain with determination.

27.

MOANA (CONT’D)
I’LL GO BEYOND
AND ALTHOUGH I DON’T KNOW WHEN
I WILL REACH THESE SANDS AGAIN
CAUSE I KNOW WHO I AM
I AM MOANA!
OF THE LAND AND OF THE SEA
AND I PROMISE THAT IS WHO I’LL
ALWAYS BE.

The chorus continues.

MOANA (CONT’D)
I MUST GO
I WILL GO
THEN WE’LL KNOW
WHAT LIES BEYOND!

As the camera swirls around Moana, she looks to the comet

ahead... her village behind her... accepting the call. SONG
ENDS.

SEQ. 155.0 - “PREPARING TO LEAVE”

INT. FALE NEAR THE SHORE - DAY

Time to get to work. Sina guides Moana through preparations.

SINA
Moana, you need a crew - Heihei and
Pua don’t count.

Heihei ignores Sina, too dumb to be offended. But Pua’s not.

MOANA
It’s the other side of the ocean,
how could I ask them to--

SINA
Our people will rise if you let
them.
(then)
Last time the chicken made it.

Heihei is like, cluck, yup. Moana considers, then...

MOANA
Well, then I’m gonna need a bigger
canoe.

LOTO (PRELAP)
Yes! Brand new--
28.

INT. LOTO’S BOAT HOUSE - A LITTLE LATER

Moana tries to focus on Loto as she swings back and forth.

LOTO
-- sleek, double-hulled design. My
best canoe yet... sweet, top-of-the-
line upgrades, for the crew, I mean-
-

MOANA
Loto! I’d like you on the crew.

LOTO
Oh... well, we should do better
than this.

Loto smashes the model to pieces, and Moana ducks to avoid

the pieces whizzing over Moana’s head. That was close!

TIGHT ON A TARO PLANT: TWO HANDS delicately pat the dirt

before we REVEAL Moana hovering over Kele as he tends his
taro.

JUMP TO: Kele ranting while Moana listens patiently. Behind

him, his APPRENTICE preens for Moana’s attention.

KELE
A farmer on the sea?

MOANA
We’re gonna need to eat more than
fish --

KELE
You’d need irrigation, plant
propagation - take even my best
apprentice - you’d starve!

MOANA
Exactly. We need a master.

KELE
Yes, you do need -

MOANA
Thanks, Kele! You’re the best!

Moana bolts before he can take it back. Kele shakes his head.

KELE
Walked into that one.
29.

INT. STORY-TELLING FALE - A LITTLE LATER

MAUI’S SIAPO - his form dominates the fale as Moana

approaches... wishing he was here to join her crew.

MOANA
Hey, Maui... it’s... been awhile.
Um, I don’t know where you are, but
I could really use your help.

A beat as... A SHADOW FIGURE APPEARS behind the siapo. Is

that... is that...??

MOANA (CONT’D)
Maui!

Moana tears open the Siapo ------- but, it’s only Moni.

MOANA (CONT’D)
(damn)
Oh, Moni.

MONI
(oblivious)
It’s both of us, actually. Maui and
me. It’s part of a series.

PULL OUT to reveal: Moni’s series of fanfic siapos.

MOANA
Wow...

Moana takes it in... and as Moni continues to ramble, an idea

starts to form, not a lightbulb so much as a revelation!

MONI
It’s too bad Maui isn’t here - you
really need someone who knows all
the old stories and someone who’s
like, super strong, and has great
hair --

MOANA
(leading)
I think I know someone else kinda
like that...

Moni doesn’t get it. He looks at her imploringly, like WHO?

Would love to meet him (or her)! A BEAT, Moana gives him an
exasperated look, YOU OBVIOUSLY!

MONI
(holy shit, realizing)
YES!!!!!!
30.
MONI (CONT’D)
I’m going with Moana on a call from
the ancestors!
(off Moana, running off!)
WOOOO!!! Get ready for some
eyewitness accounts, people!

OFF Moana smiling, excited about the team she’s put together.

INT. MOANA’S PARENTS' FALE - LIVING AREA - DAY

Moana finishes tying up her new outfit. It’s go time. Just

gotta pick up one last BASKET. Oof. It’s heavier than she
thought. She peeks inside... finds Simea.

SIMEA
I’m coming with you.

MOANA
(her heart breaking)
I’ll be back as soon as I can... I
promise.

SIMEA
What if you don’t come back...?

Moana thinks a beat, trying to find the perfect words to calm

her sister’s fears... but then has a different idea.

SEQ. 160.0 - “THE OCEAN IS OUR FRIEND”

EXT. SECLUDED COVE - EARLY MORNING

It’s just Moana and Simea... standing in the golden water.

MOANA
The Ocean is my friend. Our
friend...
(pause)
It connects us. So... there is
nowhere I could ever go that I
won’t be with you.

Simea thinks a moment, then takes a sea star from her anklet
and hands it to Moana.

SIMEA
So you can take a piece from home.

Moana smiles, moved, as Simea puts the sea star in her

necklace.
31.

SEQ. 164.0 - “FAREWELL TO THEE”

EXT. MOTUNUI BEACH - GOLDEN HOUR

Moana emerges from the tree line and is surprised to find the
entire village waiting for her, singing. As she approaches,
they part - creating a path to the canoe.

ON MOANA: Emotion threatens to overwhelm. She’s come a long

way from the girl who ran off in the middle of the night...

Tui, Sina and Simea wait for her. They hug one last time.

SEQ. 165.0 “SETTING SAIL”

JUMPING FORWARD: The VILLAGE continues to sing building

louder and stronger as the CANOE is launched into the water.
Moana looks back once more at her family. They wave goodbye.
Simea works hard to be strong for her sister.

Dozens of villagers sail out next to her, the Moanabes and

the Oily Boys giving her one last cheer. As they recede,
Moana grabs the rope, looking out at the horizon.

The comet lights the way ahead as Moana looks out to the
promise of a new future... then calls back to the crew with a
grin:

MOANA
Might want to hold on.

Moana pulls the sail, the canoe takes off sending Pua
crashing backward into the hold, and they’re off... A WAVE
splashes across the bow wiping frame CRASHING US INTO:

SEQ. 175.0 - “CAGE FIGHT”

INT. UNKNOWN LOCATION - UNKNOWN TIME

CLOSE ON: A BAT perched on MAUI’S HOOK. We descend... to find

the HOOK is suspended by a THICK ROPE... which holds a CAGE
made of A GIANT FISH SKELETON, where we find MAUI...
IMPRISONED. WTF?! But MAUI LOOKS DETERMINED... DEFIANT as he
breathes deeply, mana rising, summoning his strength.

MAUI
(to himself, hyping)
Ok, ok, ok... One more time...
(then, to others O.S.)
This is not the end of our story!
32.
MAUI (CONT’D)
This is not where our destiny is
denied! TOGETHER WE RISE AS ONE!
TOGETHER WE TAKE OUR FREEEEDOM!!!!

POP WIDE TO:

INT. GROSS “DUNGEON” - CONTINUOUS

This place is way grosser than we thought and Maui’s big

speech has been to an audience of... gross little
MUDSKIPPERS. They stare at Maui, uninterested. But Maui isn’t
going to take indifference as an answer. He fixates on one of
the mudskippers --

MAUI
That guy gets it! Yup, I mean you,
handsome. Now all ya gotta do is
GET MY HOOK!
(Mini-Maui points to Hook)
Get my hook!

Mini-Maui has little faith, but to his surprise, the

MUDSKIPPERS, start to pile up on one another... making a
mudskipper pyramid to reach the hook!

MAUI (O.S.) (CONT’D)

Ha?! YES! Yes! Come on, you got it!
Yes! That’s what I’m talking about!
HA! You’re doing it! Higher! That’s
it, Higher! We’re almost there,
just a little high-- No, no, high--
what are you?

GLUGLEGLUGOOP! Suddenly a loud, disgusting noise erupts

followed by a geyser of “OCEAN VOMIT” that knocks the pyramid
down and washes most of the mudskippers away.

As one of the mudskippers munches on goo, Mini-Maui draws a

TALLY MARK on Maui’s shoulder... one of dozens... They’ve
been at this... awhile. Mini-Maui looks to Maui, bummed.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Don’t worry, come on, you know me,
I’ll get us out of here.

Mini-Maui points to the Moana tattoo, like can she help? Maui
kicks his feet, trying to build some momentum.

MAUI (CONT’D)
(off Mini-Maui, offended)
No, I don’t need her to save me...
again...
(off Mini-Maui)
33.
MAUI (CONT’D)
‘Cause she’ll die.
(off Mini-Maui)
Nalo hates humans even more than he
hates me. And, let me tell you
something... he hates me a lot.
(Mini-Maui is like, yup)
So the farther ‘Curly’ is from any
of this the better.
(starts to swing the cage)
We’re -- on -- our -- own!

And with that, Maui swings himself up and grabs the rope with
his teeth. He’s going to climb to get his hook one awkward
chomp at a time!

MAUI (CONT’D)
Ha ha! Yeah, I got it!

Then Maui looks up to see... MATANGI swoop down onto his

hook. Still in shadow, but enjoying the show. Maui sighs.

MATANGI
Mmmm... I would let you out...
but... I’m really hoping to meet
your little friend...
(then, sweetly)
...I have plans for you both.

MAUI
What -- WHAT?! Hey! HEY!

MATANGI (O.S.)
Enjoy your lunch!

And with that Matangi cackles and flies out of the way to
reveal another “PUKE DUMP” above him... and it spews!

SEQ 202.0 - “OUT TO SEA”

EXT. OPEN OCEAN - ON THE MAST - DAY

TRANSITION TO: A wave splashing up and scaring Pua! Moana

rushes past, climbing the mast to get a better view of the
COMET, breathing in the beauty. But as she turns --

BOCK! Heihei surprises her out of nowhere. How the hell did
he get up here?

WHACK! The mast bobbles. WTF? Moana looks down to see...

LOTO, CHOPPING IT!
34.

MOANA
Loto?! What are you doing?

LOTO
I’m making improvements!

Moana zips down the mast.

MOANA
Okay, the canoe is perfect as it is.

LOTO
Perfection’s a myth. There is only
failing, then learning, then death.

She tosses her ADZE, which nearly impales PUA, who backs up,
but SLIDES as the CANOE turns, because... MONI isn’t steering
it well, as he tries to PAINT A SIAPO of MOANA. MOANA CLOCKS
THEY ARE NOW OFF COURSE FROM THE COMET.

MOANA
Moni! The oar?!

Moni, oblivious to what she means, paints an OAR into his

SIAPO of Moana leading the voyage.

MONI
Oh, of course! That’s why you’re
the wayfinder!

MOANA PUTS THEM BACK ON COURSE, BUT -- WHACK!

MOANA
No, no, no!

Loto whacks a rope, moving the sail, which pivots the boat,
ruining Moni’s siapo as his paint strokes get messed up.
Everyone slides the other way, including Pua. Moana, fixes
their path, so they are heading toward the comet.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Guys, the entire ocean is kinda
counting on us, so we gotta rise to
the moment, stay on course and keep
everyone on the canoe.
(then, realizing)
Wait... where’s the farmer?

Pua, dazed from sliding, stumbles into the... CARGO HOLD.

KELE (O.S.)
Ow!
35.

What? Moana leans down to see... Kele is hiding in the cargo

hold, covering his eyes and looking down.

KELE (CONT’D)
When will the canoe stop moving?

MOANA
Well, we’re kind of on the ocean --
(off the canoe’s wild
swing, careening to Loto)
MONI!

LOTO
(misunderstanding)
Loto. Moni’s the other one.

WHACK! Loto chops a rope and the sail swings, now they’re
really off course! The comet literally going in the opposite
direction as they start to go backwards. The MAST hits Moni,
who drops the siapo he’s painting into the water.

MOANA
Guys - we’ll never make it -- WHOO--
if you don’t embrace the ocean --

LOTO
You can’t embrace a liquid --

KELE (O.S.)
Also I cannot swim!

MOANA
Umm, you know it feels like you
could’ve -- ok...

MONI
(re: faces on wet siapo)
Aww, now everyone looks sad.

KELE (O.S.)
And whoever designed this canoe
forgot a bathroom!

Moana looks to the Ocean, who’s like, they don’t get it - do

something! Moana looks at the comet, back to the crew then
gets an idea. And she DOES A DANCE MOVE. STOMP-CLAP-CLAP-
STOMP. The crew is like what the hell does that mean?

LOTO
I am unclear as to what you are
doing.
36.

MOANA
(imploringly cornier!)
Guys, we wanna reach Motufetū?
Break Nalo’s curse? We’ve gotta
come together... find... our
rhythm.

KELE
I don’t do sing-a-longs!

As Kele shuts his cargo hold, Moana swings over on a rope.

(Same shot with Pua and Heihei, Moana will just be swinging
by in the deep background, super corny, finger-gun style.)

MOANA
Oh we’ll see about that!

SEQ. 205.0 - “WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THIS?” - SONG

Moana jumps to MONI, who is trying to draw a siapo, but Moana

picks him up, pulling him around the canoe as the ocean
pivots the oar up and down, see-sawing them.

MOANA
GET UP AND GET ON YOUR FEET -
IT’S TIME TO LIVE YOUR OWN STORY

MONI
Whoa!

Moana aggressively pulls Moni to steer the oar.

MOANA
EVEN IF YOU DISAGREE
TRYING IS MANDATORY
LOOK AROUND

MONI
[WEEEE!]

MOANA
WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THIS!

KELE
Everything’s better than this!

Moana goes back to find Kele in the cargo hold, and tries to
pull him out.

MOANA
C’MON, YOU JUST NEED SOME SUN
YA CAN’T STAY IN THERE FOREVER
YOU’RE GONNA MISS ALL THE FUN
(MORE)
37.
MOANA (CONT’D)
DON’T YOU KNOW T’GETHER’S BETTER
CAN’T YOU SEE?!
NOTHING IS BETTER THAN THIS!

KELE
I’m gonna be sick.

MOANA
Well, I know what’ll help that!

MOANA/MONI
FEEL THE WIND AS WE’RE RIDING THE
WAVES

Moana steers the canoe with Moni, he’s having fun. But then
Loto pops in to frame.

LOTO
THE ODDS ARE WE’LL END UP IN WATERY
GRAVES

MOANA
Loto!

LOTO
Observation!

TIME TRANSITIONS: From here we go to Kele, getting knocked

around the cargo hold by his coconuts.

MOANA/MONI
YEAH WE’RE EBBING AND FLOWING!
THERE’S NO SIGN OF SLOWIN’!
WE KNOW WHERE WE’RE GOING!
SO WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THIS?

We go back to the deck, where Moana and Moni dance, as we

push track through several times of day, and various weather.

MOANA/MONI (CONT’D)
WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THIS?
WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THIS?
WE’RE STARTING TO HIT A STRIDE
I’M IN FOR A CRAZY RIDE
WE’LL BE THERE IN NO TIME
BECAUSE WE’RE IN THIS TOGETHER
WOAHHH NOTHING IS BETTER THAN THIS!

We find Kele peering out of his dark cargo hold.

KELE
Think I’m going insane on the sea.

Moana dances by with Moni, extra corny.

38.

MOANA
This is so great!

KELE
Just give me one grain of sand and
a tree.

Moana and Moni try to pull Kele from the cargo hold.

MOANA/MONI
YEAH WE’RE SO IN THE MOMENT
WE’RE ROCKIN’ AND ROLLIN’
WE’RE FRIENDS WITH THE OCEAN
SO NOTHING IS BETTER THAN THIS!

LOTO
Wrong.

MOANA
What?

LOTO
(rap time!)
WELLLLLLL...
LET ME GIVE YOU A CORRECTION EVEN
THOUGH THIS SONG IS CLEVER
THE ANSWER TO YOUR QUESTION,
“WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE BETTER?”
TECHNICALLY SPEAKING, PERFECTION’S
A MYTH

Loto tests something out on Heihei. Satisfied. Moves on.

LOTO (CONT’D)
EVEN THOUGH THE JOURNEY’S EPIC
SOMETHING BETTER COULD EXIST
BUT THAT’S WHY I’M ALWAYS
DESIGNING, ALIGNING
COMBINING IDEAS, AND ALWAYS
REFINING

Loto chops and smashes pieces of the canoe, making Moana lose
her mind, but Loto’s slippery and keeps popping up on
different parts of the boat like a whack-a-mole.

LOTO (CONT’D)
I’M A REAL BRIGHT THINKER
AND A GENIUS WHEN I TINKER
WITH A LOVE OF PROBLEM SOLVING
AS A MODEL CANOE SINKER

Moana tries to stop her - that’s it for Loto’s verse - but

NOPE LOTO ISN’T DONE -- Loto amps it up A LOT!
39.

LOTO (CONT’D)
WE’RE FAILING FANTASTICALLY,
YES WE’RE A MESS
AND WE’RE MESSING UP DRASTICALLY
FALLING ON YOUR FACE IS THE BEST!
IF YOU DO IT WRONG THAN YOU RUN
ANOTHER TEST, YES!

Moana finally corners Loto.

LOTO (CONT’D)
IT’S REALLY SIMPLE ACTUALLY
THE MOTTO OF LOTO TILL HER VERY
LAST BREATH
THERE’S REALLY ONLY FAILING,
THEN LEARNING, THEN DEATH.

Crickets. Moana stares at Loto, everyone does. Then Moana

pulls one little rope and the SAIL OPENS full and they rocket
off, like she just hit the afterburners.

LOTO (CONT’D)
Woah wa-WOAHHHH!

And now, we’re all back in as they speed off with the ocean
cosigning their journey by giving them a boost!

ALL (EXCEPT KELE)

WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THIS?!

MONI
LITERALLY NOTHING BETTER THAN THIS!

MONI/MOANA/LOTO
WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN THIS?
WHOA!

MONI
REALLY TRULY NOTHING BETTER THAN
THIS!

MOANA
C’mon Kele! The ocean’s our friend!

MONI/LOTO
WE’RE STARTING TO UNDERSTAND!

KELE
Just take me back to land!

MONI
WE’LL GET TO THAT ISLAND

Moana draws a “heart” in the water

40.

- CUT TO: Simea, seeing the same heart in the water on the
shore-- a little sea-mail if you will -- she knows it’s from
Moana. She jumps for joy, splashing in the water!

- CUT BACK TO: Moana’s side, and Moana gets that same
splash/faceful of water.

ALL (EXCEPT KELE)

EVEN IF IT’S TAKING FOREVER
WOAHH! NOTHING IS BETTER THAN THIS!

The Ocean joins the percussion as they finally pull Kele out
of the cargo hold! He’s scared, but Moana glances at the
coconuts and gets an idea!

MONI
Everybody now!

MOANA
FEEL THE AIR...

ALL (EXCEPT KELE)

IN OUR HAIR...

MOANA
WATCH US SOAR...

ALL (EXCEPT KELE)

MAN THE OAR...

MOANA
GOING WHERE...

ALL (EXCEPT KELE)

NO ONE’S GONE BEFORE!
WOAH! WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN
THIS?!

Kele, in full COCONUT FLOATIES is closer and closer to the

edge of the boat... He’s considering this for the first
time... as annoying as it is, their enthusiasm is infectious.

MOANA
You’ve got it Kele!

On this last line, Moana, Loto, and Moni -- do choreographed

spins around Kele...

ALL
WHOA... WHAT COULD BE BETTER
THANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN...
41.

In the pregnant pause of this moment -- Kele decides... screw

it! A very here-goes-nothing kind of attitude... as everyone
waits, he prepares to jump when --

BOOM!!!! THE COMET JUST... EXPLODES. LIKE DEAD. WTF?!

But Moni, who’s had his back to the comet waiting his big
moment, finally gets it and sings the biggest note ever!

MONI
THISSSS!!!!

Only to realize he’s all alone. He spins around and sees what
everyone else does -- the comet is no more. As give another
explosive pop... our SONG ENDS.

SEQ. 210.0 - “M. I. FALLOUT / WHERE’S THE OCEAN?”

EXT. OPEN OCEAN - EARLY MORNING - CONTINUOUS

Moana stares at the exploded comet. The Crew all stares WIDE-
EYED, looking utterly confused.

KELE
Isn’t that what we were supposed to
follow?

MOANA
Uh... let’s -- nobody pa...nic--
(another explosion)
I’m sure this happened for a
reason...
(then)
Yeah, it’s probably a good thing,
right? -- whoooa!

WHOOSH! The canoe lurches in the opposite direction and

everyone goes sprawling. Moana’s like WTF?!

MOANA (CONT’D)
Moni, grab the oar!

Moni rushes over to help Moana. Together they try to shift

the giant steering oar, but the canoe doesn’t change course.

MONI
I’m trying! Something’s wrong with
the canoe!
42.

LOTO
(defensive)
It is not the canoe! It’s the
current!

MOANA
What?!

Moana jumps down on the outrigger, to get a better view but

also to implore the Ocean for a little help.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Hey Ocean, so I kinda wasn’t given
a lot of directions...

POP WIDE: canoe is spinning out of control on a wild current.

MOANA (O.S.) (CONT’D)

Other than... follow the comet!
(back on Moana)
So, if you’re telling me to change
course a little thumbs up would be
super awesome!

WHOOSH, the current pulls them more and they accelerate,

trapped in a mysterious current...

KELE (O.S.)
Land? Land?!

Kele’s exclamation pulls Moana’s eyes forward to... something

on the horizon, shimmering, getting closer... an island...?

MONI
It’s (AWED) Motufetū! We found it!
Really quickly...

As they all squint to see... the silhouette coming more into

focus... Even Moana, for just a moment, wants to believe!

LOTO
Do I hear... people?

The crew starts to smile... But Moana’s spidey-senses are

tingling... Moana squints, then... her expression changes...
realizing what they are actually looking at. Her heart drops.

MOANA
That’s no island... and those
aren’t “people.”

REVEAL: a HUGE KAKAMORA BARGE coming out of the fog!

43.

SEQ. 215.0 - “KAKAMORA!”

Moni gasps. The first time he’s seeing “monsters.” A beat.

The whole crew watches, gobsmacked.

MOANA MONI
Kaka -- Mora!

That lands on all of them as the Kakamora extend their sails,

they pick up speed toward Moana and her crew, closing the
gap! We hear their war cry.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Okay... We gotta go!

Moana springs into action, quickly moving past her panicked

crew to prepare the boat for action. The KAKAMORA BARGE
charges CLOSER! Their ROARS are getting LOUDER! CLOSER,
CLOSER!! Until finally, THE BARGE LOOMS OVER THEM. They stare
up, anticipating their deaths.

KELE
This is so embarrassing! A farmer,
murdered by coconuts!

But... the Kakamora barge just... races PAST Moana’s canoe.

LOTO
(huh, that’s weird)
So, they’re just ignoring us.
That’s good... is that good?

But Moana knows there must be something else going on, looks
ahead to see the CURRENT accelerating... sucking the ocean
toward... BLOOOOSH! A GINORMOUS 1000 FOOT WIDE MONSTER CLAM
that’s SUCKING THE ENTIRE OCEAN INTO ITS GAPING MAW!! THAT’S
WHAT IS CREATING THE CURRENT!! And it obliterates one of the
Kakamora mini-barges as it snaps shut.

On MOANA: This is insane, even for her, let alone the crew.

MOANA
Ok! You guys... cargo hold!

Moana shoves her frozen crew down into the hold, swallowing
her own fear - she GETS TO WORK SAVING THE DAY in a dazzling
display of balletic athleticism and sheer guts.

EXT. MOANA’S CANOE - OPEN OCEAN - MOMENTS LATER

ZOOOOOOM!! Moana ties a rope from the Kakamora barge to her

canoe, slingshotting around the side, faster and faster!
44.

The Crew watch from the hold, amazed.

LOTO
Woah! She’s using centrifugal force
to increase our velocity!
(then, looking O.S.)
Moana!

Loto points to the Kakamora, who see what Moana is doing and
begin shooting darts at her. One Kakamora, KOTU, seems
especially aggressive. He fires at her, but Moana knocks his
darts back at him. Cocky, she gives a cheeky wave.

MOANA
Buh-Bye! Thanks for the ride--!

But just as Moana thinks she’s in the clear, her canoe hits a
piece of reef below and -- RIPPPPPPPPCRASHHHH!!! The ROPES
connecting both canoes SNAG HARD on a hidden UNDERWATER REEF,
tangling Moana’s canoe around the Kakamora Barge! No! It
swings them together and they crash into each other hard.

Moana gets her bearings and as the Kakamora growl at her, she
grips her oar like a weapon. She knows she’s outnumbered.
Smiles, kinda.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Bring it on Coco --
(THWIP THWIP THWIP THWIP)
--nuts.

MOANA IS SUDDENLY PARALYZED. She falls, her back full of

darts as we rack to find Kotu, the coolest warrior of all
time, and kid of the Kakamora chief, is BEHIND HER!

Kele chuckles-- too far past fear to be coherent.

WHIP PAN OVER: to the crew in the hold. Everyone looks to

Kele like, why did you laugh?! THWIP THWIP THWIP. Kotu shoots
them too. THWIP... one more for the pig. Right in the bacon.
THWIP... the last dart inexplicably misses Heihei and hits a
ROPE right by his head.

SEQ. 227.0 - “SLIP, SLIDIN’ AWAY”

PUNCH WIDE: to see all the Kakamora in a murderous rage! They

are going to finish Moana and her crew off as Moana, total
bag of bones tries to reason with the Kakamora! Kotu
approaches twirling his weapon menacingly...

MOANA
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Listen to me! We
are on a shacred voyage!
45.
MOANA (CONT’D)
You will releash ush --oof-- you --
wait! Wait!

Heihei pecks the rope one more time, releasing the sail,
which reveals... the IMAGE OF MOTUFETŪ. And... suddenly,
EVERYTHING STOPS! Moana looks around -- what does this mean?

The Chief interrupts by raising an EVEN GNARLIER WEAPON.

Moana pauses. Doesn’t seem like a good sign. A LONG TENSE
BEAT and then... the CHIEF WAVES IT IN THE AIR, a CHEER!

INSERT: Several Kakamora swoop in and raise Heihei on their

shoulders like a hero! And cart him off enthusiastically.

And all the Kakamora cheer and celebrate!!!!

EXT. KAKAMORA BARGE - A LITTLE LATER

We jump forward in time. The atmosphere is jubilant - like

coconut Mardi Gras. Moana and her whole team are dropped HARD
onto the Kakamora barge... except for Heihei who is gently
set down with care.

MOANA
What ish happening...?

SUDDENLY, one of the Kakamora a unfurls one of Moni’s siapos:

it’s another MAUI/MONI FANART PIECE... of them kicking
Kakamora ass. Oopsie. The Kakamora gestures, Did you do this?

MONI
That is... fan fic.

KELE
You dolt, their ashking if you drew
it, ‘caushe they want you to
transhlate that picture.

The Kakamora shift to form a... DOT-GRAPHIC PICTURE.

Rudimentary stuff BUT Moni gets it... it’s THEIR HISTORY!
It’s absurd and ridiculous, there’s no way he should
understand this much but, he inexplicably does! It’s a gift!

As Moni interprets, the crew is incredulous. They don’t get

any of this... how the --

home island is in the same sea as
Motufetū - and when Nalo divided
the ocean to weaken the people of
the sea, your ancestors were
disconnected from their home, but
you thought you’d finally found the
way back when you ran into this
GIANT CLAM and now you’re worried
you’ll stay separated forever.

MOANA
This whole time... they’ve just
been trying to get home?

We sit in this moment, Moana realizing she has more in common

with the Kakamora than she thought. The Chief communicates
something, points to Moana and the crew... then gestures to
the CLAM. This time, Moana gets it.

MOANA (CONT’D)
But... if we help you defeat the
clam... you’ll help us reach
Motufetū... together.

The Chief nods.

KELE
HELLO?! We’re still jelly! How’re
we gonna beat that?! Floppy can’t
even wiggle a finger!

LOTO
Well, our muscles are full of neuro-
toxin. Wait, wait! Hang on, a clam
is basically one giant muscle, so
we get close enough with that
stuff, shoot it in the ganglion,
it’s goodnight clam and helloooo
Motufetū.

Moana looks to the Kakamora chief, who, along with his

advisors, look stunned, they’d never considered that. They
nod then throw up affirmative shakas. Great!

MOANA
(to Kakamora, excited)
Do you think it’ll work?!

Yes, but... the chief points to Moana, she’s on the hook.

MOANA (CONT’D)
(realizing)
Oh -- you want us to do it.
(Moana’s head tilts back)
47.
MOANA (CONT’D)
Ogh-- It’d be easier if we’re not
jelly?

There’s a clicking sound on the PLINKO BOARD OFF SCREEN.

INSERT MONI -- translating:

MONI
Ooo! Don’t worry! They can fix
that!

MOANA
(head still tilted back)
How?

In answer, Moana is thrown to the ground. HARD CUT TO:

INT. KAKAMORA BARGE - TOXIN ROOM

A giant gross BLOBFISH. Moana’s like, huh?! It moves closer

until it slides over top of Moana and her crew -- even Pua --
LIKE A GIANT SLUG SLIMING THEM... AWFUL. They emerge all
various degrees of nauseated - except Loto who’s having the
best moment of her life! WHOA.

LOTO
Tastes like coconut...
(then)
It went right over the top of us,
didn’t it!

Moana sits up, covered in slime. Pua, shivers from the trauma
of that experience.

MOANA
(wipes slime off her face)
Okay! Where do we get the toxin for
the clam?

CUT TO: A Kakamora tickles the Blobfish’s nose with a feather

and it blobfish sneezes out the toxin. The Kakamora catch it
in a vat, but it hits one in the face and he falls flat on
his face. Kele closes his eyes, this is all a nightmare.

LOTO
(re: Blobfish)
A dream from both ends.

SEQ. 250.0 - “SALUTE TO THE CHOSEN ONE”

48.

EXT. MOANA’S CANOE - A LITTLE LATER

The reef holding the barge and the canoe cracks a bit more!
They don’t have much time! Moana clocks this as she readies
the Canoe, ropes pulled, equipment tied. Heihei stowed.

MOANA
C’mon, we gotta go!

A Kakamora drum beat kicks in as THUD! Kotu ziplines down

onto the canoe. He dips the ARROW into a bowl of NEUROTOXIN
and holds it out to Moana. As Moana tries to take it... Kotu
doesn’t let go. A mini standoff.

MOANA (CONT’D)
We made a deal. We take out the
clam... and then you’re helping us
get to Motufetū.
(then, struggling, Kotu is
inexplicably strong)
You are small but mighty.

The Kakamora chief signals and Kotu reluctantly relents and

catapults himself back up on the barge. The Kakamora loosen
the rope pulley, sending our team toward the clam. As the
Clam “growls,” Pua cowers. Moana looks back to the Kakamora.
The Chief looks at Moana and does a SLAP RHYTHM on his shell.

MONI
(figuring it out, cool)
Whoa! I think it’s a warriors’
salute... To show respect...

As the crew look up, the ENTIRE CREW OF KAKAMORA do it too.

It’s unexpectedly emotional... Until:

KELE
Or it’s goodbye in case we croak.

BRRRRAGHHH! The Giant Clam bellows horribly, a gust of wind

envelops them as they approach it.

SEQ. 255.0 - “GO TIME!”

EXT. WATER - CONTINUOUS

Moana and her crew get closer, about to CROSS INTO THE
INTERIOR of the CLAM SHELL. Pua hates this. The water gets
rougher, tendrils slither out, nearly touching Heihei before
Pua yanks him back to safety.
49.

MONI
(looking around)
Uhhh...

KELE
How do we shoot a ganglion if we
don’t know what it looks like?

LOTO
I think we’re gonna know what a
ganglion looks like when we see it.

The music swells and swells and.........The cutest little

ganglion in the world reveals itself, with pretty little
bioluminescent lights signaling straight to its center like a
silly little bullseye. Impossibly easy.

MOANA
Huh.

LOTO
(Whispered)
Yeah...

The team looks at each other. Moana is surprised by how small

it is. Like, NBD. She shrugs.

MOANA
So, I just --
(mimes touching ganglion)
-- and Motufetū here we come?

MONI
Mission accomplished--

But just as Moni says that... again...the REEF fractures

nearly all the way, yanking the Kakamora barge, causing Moana
to drop the spear as the canoe careens WAY OFF COURSE! Moana
panics, nearly falling into the abyss!

MOANA
No no no!

LOTO
And this is why you always have a
back up!

Loto presents ANOTHER SPEAR! But as she grins -- WHAP! Loto

gets hit in the face by a falling Heihei, and DROPS the
second spear too! But she holds up yet ANOTHER SPEAR.

LOTO (CONT’D)
And a third!
50.

But WHAM! Kele tumbles into her. There goes the third spear.

LOTO (CONT’D)
Well... a fourth would be lunacy.

CRACK! The reef gives out again! Death is imminent! Moana

looks around, panicked -- then sees it - one of the spears
lodged below... she reaches for it but can’t get close
enough... As SCHHLLUURRRRRP!!! Moana’s canoe is being SUCKED
DEEPER INTO THE CLAM, the crew is TERRIFIED!

But-- a NOISE -- cuts through the mist of the clam --

KOTU! Emerges through the mist ziplining in glorious SLO-MO.

He fires off a MASSIVE TOXIN-FILLED SPEAR AND BOOM! Toxin
explodes all over the GANGLION. The Crew GO WILD! The Clam
gurgles and spasms, they’ve done it!

But... CRACK! THE SHUDDERING OF THE CLAM shatters the reef

completely... and now the Barge is being sucked in, too! And
the clam itself is shutting, with Moana and her crew inside!

MOANA
We gotta get out!

Moana and Kotu realize that the clam is closing too quickly
and both race to the rope... which is straining under the
intense pull of their canoe! Moana struggles with all her
might, but as she looks over, Kotu stops helping.

Kotu looks at the barge, which is being pulled toward the

clam faster - they’re gonna die too! Kotu looks to his barge,
his Kakamora family. And then... looks back to the rope,
knowing what he must do. At the same time, Moana realizes
he’s planning on severing the connection to save his barge.

MOANA (CONT’D)
WAIT! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! HEY!
DON’T!

But Kotu takes a final look at his father and SEVERS the
rope. And WHOOOOOOOOSH!!! THE CLAM’S SHELL STARTS TO HEAVE
TOGETHER, and in a MASSIVE WHIRLPOOL TSUNAMI, Moana’s worst
nightmare comes true as THEIR CANOE GETS SUCKED INSIDE THE
CLAM -- AND THEN THE CLAM SHUTS!! THEY’RE GONE!

ON THE KAKAMORA BARGE: The KAKAMORA look devastated as they

realize they lost Kotu and their best shot at finding
Motufetū. The Blobfish sobs.

SEQ. 260.0 - “CLAM CHOW”

51.

INT. MOANA’S CANOE - PAHUA’S GUTS

Moana’s canoe rushes through a Willy Wonka-esque log-flume

ride through the Clam’s digestive tract!! Ewwwww!! Agghhhh!!
Everyone is SCREAMING as they plunge over the side!

EVERYONE
AAGGGGGHHH!!!! / (ADLIBS APLENTY!)

SEQ. 310.0 - “TALKING TRASH”

INT. CLAM TUNNEL - CONTINUOUS

Everyone’s falling out of control. In the midst of the chaos

Moana tries to reach Moni.

MOANA
Moni?!
(long falling yell)
Moooooonnnnniiiiii!

MONI
Moannnaaa!

FFWHOOSH! Moana is sucked backwards - DISAPPEARING into the

fog. We cannot see which way she is going and Moni has a
split-second to process how bad this is before FFWHOOSH! He’s
sucked in the opposite direction down a different tunnel.

EXT. PAHUA TRASH-PILES - MOMENTS LATER

SMASH DOWN! We’re with Moni as he flies out of control and

finally lands on some weird incline and flops to an awkward
stop on his back - looking STRAIGHT UP at their CANOE -
teetering precariously at the top of the giant trash pile.

A beat and then a MONSTER SKULL enters frame right over his
face. BOCK! It’s just Heihei. But, still scary!

MONI
AGHHH!

Moni turns to find something even scarier: KELE’S BUTTCRACK.

MONI (CONT’D)
AAGHHHH!

POP WIDE: as Moni’s scream echoes through the massive,

cavernous and terrifying chamber. More trash piles and
monster bones scattered throughout, cloaked in a mysterious,
pervasive fog - the place seems totally inhospitable to life.
52.

BACK ON: Loto taking it all in... she’s FASCINATED.

MONI (CONT’D)
(calling out)
Moana?! MOANA!?

KELE
(looking off-screen)
Kaaakaaamora! YOU DID THIS!!

Reveal, Kele, full of rage picks up a BONE LIKE A WEAPON and

throws it at Kotu! But the coconut begins to RISE! That’s no
Kakamora, it’s a MONSTER under the ground, rearing up!

KELE (CONT’D)
Made... made an assumption there.

The monster looks threateningly at our team, but Kotu leaps

from nowhere and darts it. A beat as the monster suddenly
swells up like a balloon, and... then deflates with a long
HIGH-PITCHED SQUEAL that peters out... then makes A WET FART
NOISE that squirts one BIG BLOOSH! Loto inspects the goo.

LOTO
Fascinating... it’s like an acid.

But then they realize... it IS ACID... and the ground beneath

them deteriorates and gives out... and splits open and
FFWHOOSH they all go tumbling down!

SEQ. 313.0 - “DO THE KIP UP”

INT. DANK DUNGEON - CONTINUOUS

WHAM! The crew slam into the slimy ground below - followed by
a SHIT TON of debris. We lose the crew for a moment... before
we SEE TWO EYES OPEN... Certainly a monster of some sort...
it’s hard to tell. It blinks open its eyes and --

MAUI
(falsetto)
Can I get a chee hoo?

IT’S F-ING MAUI! We’re in his prison cell. This is where eh’s
been this whole time! He’s still trapped inside his cage, but
he’s not hanging anymore. He’s flat on his face. HUGE WIN.

Hands bound, Maui does a KIP UP (google it) and lands on his
feet, feeling good despite how ridiculous he looks.
53.

MAUI (CONT’D)
(looks up to see his hook
still dangling)
Now I just gotta get my baby.

His hands are pinned by the cage on either side so he can’t

bring them together which makes what he’s about to attempt
not impossible... but really embarrassing to watch:

Maui tilts over sideways (like he’s in one of those awkward

inflatable sumo suits) and grabs at a rope. It takes a beat
but he’s getting it when he comes face-to-face with MONI!

MAUI (CONT’D)
Agggh!

MONI
Mauiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii....????????

Maui loses his grip, his “cage” rolls him around like he’s a
giant inflatable ball. As he lies on his back, like a stuck
turtle, Loto, Kele and Moni lean over... huddled together,
totally starstruck (Moni most of all).

MONI (CONT’D)
The tattoo moves. The tattoo moves!

Loto pokes it. Mini-Maui tries to hide behind other tattoos.

MAUI
Hey - no! No, no, no! listen to me -
I am a demigo - ow - stop it!

LOTO
(geeking out)
Whoooohoooohooo.

MONI
Lucky! I want to be slapped by the
tattoo.

MAUI
HEY!

Maui ROLLS himself back upright, like a teeter-totter, not

graceful, not cool... and a little off balance, but his face
projects absolute dignity and in-charge-ness.

As Moni gets closer and closer to him, Maui accidentally

rolls back over to the side and out of frame.

MAUI (O.S.) (CONT’D)

Just -- okay, guys, could you
please - just roll me back --
54.

MONI
(a little too into it)
-- I’ll roll you back --

MAUI (O.S.)
No, no, no! Not him!

Loto rolls him back. Maui remains... dignified. As the

rolling is happening Kele is deeply unimpressed.

KELE
(aside, to Moni)
This is what happens when you meet
your heroes.

MONI
(totally enraptured)
I know, right?

MAUI
Okay, rule number one. You never
saw me like this. Even though I
still look very cool.

KELE
You look like a kidney stone.

MAUI
And you look like someone who would
know what that is.

CLONK, from somewhere up above, Pua falls loose and lands on

Maui’s head. He hits the ground, grumbling.... Maui looks
suddenly... Hungry.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Well, hello, Bacon. Okay, I feel
like there’s some backstory that I
need to be caught up on --

LOTO
Oh, uh...

MAUI
(Moni starts to answer)
Actually, you know what - scratch
that. I don’t wanna get attached if
y’all -
(makes death gesture and
noise, Mini-Maui pokes him)
Which, which you guys won’t -
You’re not gonna do that, I don’t
even know why I said that.
55.
MAUI (CONT’D)
The point is, there’s some serious
god stuff going down, so I’ma go
handle ma business.

Maui gets back to work: he awkwardly throws the rope and

manages to lasso his hook, pulls it down, catches it with one
hand behind the back (showing off).

The crew watches - what’s he gonna do next? Bust through the

cage?? Nope. He SHIFTS into a... MAUI-BUG! Oh no - is he on
the fritz? Nope, the Maui bug zooms up and out of the bars.
He’s free! And then SHIFTS in quick succession: Shark. Hawk.
MAUI. He’s still got it! And he’s totally showing off again.
A nod and a wink to the humans, it’s been real. Moni passes
out from Maui’s coolness.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Alright, be back in a bit. Until
then, stay alive, talk to no one.
And if ya see a crazy bat lady,
run. She’s the worst.
(Mini-Maui, wrap it up!)
Stay away or you will die. Be good!
Maui, out!

BAGOCK! Heihei pops out of the mouth of a mudskipper.

MAUI (CONT’D)
(happy)
Boat snack!
(horror dawning)
Boat snack.

Maui and Mini-Maui share a look. This is bad bad bad.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Where’s Moana?

SEQ. 317.0 - “MOANA, YOU IN DANGER, GIRL”

EXT. UNKNOWN LOCATION - UNKNOWN TIME

It’s foggy all around as Moana opens her eyes -- having just
crash-landed through the clam... and is suddenly face-to-face
with... Simea! sitting on her chest!! How is this possible?
Moana doesn’t care! Simea lunges in for a hug -- Moana
reciprocates squeezing tightly --

MOANA
Simea?! SIMEA!
(wait, this isn’t right)
How are you... here...?
56.

SIMEA
(sweet whisper)
I’m not. You got sucked inside a
giant clam and our story will end,
‘cause now you’ll never help the
people of the ocean and your
ancestors will be like “Moana, we
hate you forever...”
(then, suddenly)
**Bat noises**

Moana pulls back to look at Simea, confused. As she does,

POP! POP! One bat ear and then another pops out of Simea’s
head. What? Then POP! A creepy, fangy bat smile. WTF???

Moana jerks away -- and we POP WIDE TO REVEAL:

EXT. CLAM CAVERN - CONTINUOUS

Moana jolts awake and suddenly realizes she’s face to face

with a FERAL BAT, Peka.

MOANA
Aghh!

She jumps up, and grabs her oar to fight Peka off, but Peka
latches onto the oar and won’t come off. Moana tries to shake
the bat free -- all while trying to get her bearings -- but
Peka isn’t going anywhere. This goes on longer than it
should... when finally! Peka flies off, exiting through...
the MOUTH of the clam “cave” that Moana has fallen into. Warm
light shines from the OUTSIDE of the cave mouth. Moana
realizes this is her way out -- she’s got to get up to that
exit. But as she contemplates this she realizes... Peka is
still on her oar, and as she tries to whack him off --
WHOOSH! Hundreds of bats swarm her!

SEQ. 320.0 - “MEET MATANGI”

ONE BAZILLION BATS RACE AROUND MOANA, THY’RE EVERYWHERE.

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?! She swats, trying to find a path in
the darkness they’ve created! She reaches out to the Cave
wall and manages to get a good hold. She’s gonna climb out of
this cave!!!

MOANA (CONT’D)
(psyching herself up)
I got this... I got this.

MATANGI
You got this.
57.

Moana startles, totally freaked, discovering: MATANGI, a

purple-eyed demigod, bold, seductive, UPSIDE-DOWN, hovering
above her, descending from the air, with the help of a
magical, SIAPO CLOTH. She chuckles at Moana’s startle. It’s
the first time we’ve gotten a good look at her and... she’s
lithe, strategic and knows Moana’s her meal ticket.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
Relax, I don’t bite. Peka might.

Peka aggressively bites a piece of bone. Matangi’s

unsettlingly cool as she circles, sizing Moana up.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
Been a while since I’ve seen a
wayfinder.
(off Moana, no-brainer)
Love the oar.

MOANA
(lifts oar like a weapon)
Would you like to see me use it?

MATANGI
Ooo, feisty. We have that in
common... Moana.
(off Moana)
The human who’s “got all the gods
talking!”

Not having it, Moana does a bad-ass move that pins Matangi’s
SIAPO with her oar. That gets Matangi’s attention... This she
can work with.

MOANA
Who are you?

MATANGI
Matangi. Guardian of this little
slice of paradise.

A nearby barnacle oozes goo onto Moana’s oar. She shakes it

off and looks back to Matangi, curious.

MOANA
You live here?

MATANGI
Not by choice...

What!? Before Moana can follow up, Matangi starts sizing

Moana up -- and Moana is trying to get away -- she’s
uncomfortable and this chick is weird... Moana’s like stop
touching me!
58.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
(faux hurt)
Maui never mentioned me?
(re-record more playful:)
Probably too busy “playing” with
his tattoo.
(then, to Moana)
Well, come on, then.

Peka harasses Moana as Matangi moves into a fog bank... which

clears to reveal... Matangi is now on a SKIFF. WTF? And she’s
lounging in the sail like it’s a hammock.

MOANA
Uhh, I’m not going anywhere with
you. I need to --

MATANGI
Get outta here, break Nalo’s curse,
find Motufetū...
(a dangerous smile)
Here to help...

MOANA
You know the way to Motufetū?

MATANGI
(laughs, simple humans)
You think you can only get
somewhere if you know the way?

MOANA
That’s kinda what wayfinding is.

MATANGI
Ugh, so much to learn.

Matangi loops upside-down like a roller coaster over Moana’s

head then swoops in and grabs Moana - dropping her on the
deck as they land on a river. MOANA LOOKS BACK TRYING TO MARK
THE EXIT LOCATION - hoping to get back. But Matangi spins her
around before she can get her bearings.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
A true wayfinder doesn’t know the
path at all, that’s the whole
point. To find your way to what’s
never been found.
(then)
If you wanna break Nalo’s curse,
you gotta stop playing it safe,
sis, get a little lost.
59.

MOANA
Why would I listen to anything you
say?

MATANGI
Because Nalo trapped me too.

Moana reacts. What does that mean?

MATANGI (CONT’D)
I want you to beat Nalo, I want to
be free.

And with that, Matangi turns dramatically away and strikes a

theatrical pose as she’s hit with a spotlight... and our SONG
BEGINS.

SEQ. 335.0 - “GET LOST” - SONG

MATANGI
I’VE BEEN STUCK A THOUSAND YEARS...
JUST FADING, WADING THRU THE FEARS...
THIS GIANT CLAM GETS REAL OLD MY DEAR
SO COME REAL CLOSE,
I'LL LET YOU KNOW
HOW YOU CAN GET OUT OF HERE...
(whispering, right by
Moana’s side)
There’s always another way to get
where you need to go, you just have
to think... a little different.

MOANA
Different how...?

MATANGI
Glad you asked!

Before Moana can refuse, the entire skiff tilts... DOWNWARD

through the fog, on a steep flume, taking Moana away from the
“exit light.”

MATANGI (CONT’D)
GET LOST!
CUT LOOSE!
AND LOSE YOUR WAY!
THERE AIN’T
NO FUN
IN HOLDIN’ BACK, BABE
YOU GOTTA ENJOY THE THRILL
OF LIVIN’ DANGEROUSLY
YOU’VE GOT A LONG
lONG WAY TO GO
(MORE)
60.
MATANGI (CONT’D)
KEEP PLAYIN’ SAFE
YOU’LL NEVER KNOW
THE RULES ARE OURS TO BREAK!
C'MON BABE!
IT'S TIME TO GET LOST

Matangi spins Moana around, surrounding her in bats, and when

they part, Moana is in an entirely different part of the
cavern, she looks around desperately for the “exit light.”

MOANA
That is terrible advice.

MATANGI
Then you’re not listening!

Matangi’s bats encircle the skiff and send them into another
fog bank, down a crazier flume! That lights up like a
psychedelic disco as they pass through.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
TAKE A LOOK AROUND,
[NOT] RIGHT AND LEFT
[BUT] UP AND DOWN!
[‘CUZ] ON THE EDGE
IT’S ALL ABOUT
LIVIN’ BOLD AND FREE
EXPAND YOUR MIND TO SEE
AND PUT YOUR TRUST IN ME

Moana desperately looks for the exit light again, thinks she
spots it, digs her oar... but the current is too strong, and
it’s pulling her OVER A WATERFALL. Moana panics, trying to
avoid it, but can’t! She goes flying over the side, but
Matangi soars in a grabs her.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
BECAUSE YOU’VE GOT POTENTIAL
TO TRAVEL THE DISTANCE
I’VE BEEN EXISTENTIAL
AND LOST TO EXISTENCE
AND THERE IS NO MAP TO YOUR DESTINATION
NO EXPLANATION TO SOLVE THIS EQUATION

Matangi soars into the air, then drops Moana! Who panics,
before Matangi catches her again, and sends her tumbling
toward a dark-shrouded tunnel, which Moana WANTS TO AVOID!

MATANGI (CONT’D)
WE GOTTA GET LOST!
CUT LOOSE!
AND LOSE OUR WAY!
THERE AIN’T
(MORE)
61.
MATANGI (CONT’D)
NO FUN
IN HOLDIN’ BACK, BABE

Moana slides out of control into the tunnel. Creepy fog

swirls below. NO THANK YOU! As she slides, Moana rockets past
a lava tube through which she can see the “EXIT LIGHT”
glowing from the other side. She manages to stop herself and
with great effort she climbs her way to the top of the lava
tube!

MATANGI (CONT’D)
YOU GOTTA ENJOY THE THRILL
OF LIVIN’ DANGEROUSLY
YOU’VE GOT A LONG
LONG WAY TO GO
KEEP PLAYIN’ SAFE
YOU’LL NEVER KNOW
THE RULES ARE OURS TO BREAK!

Moana emerges at the top, to find Matangi waiting for her...

Matangi nudges Moana with her foot and sends Moana back down
the lava tube and into the dark, foreboding fog.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
WHADDYA SAY?

Moana emerges through the DARK FOG into... a CLEARING: it’s

MATANGI’S PERSONAL DWELLING DOWN HERE. Her vulnerable space.
And it’s here, that Matangi let down her guard... and sings
to Moana, sincere..

MATANGI (CONT’D)
Look...
DON’T YOU KNOW HOW GOOD YOU HAVE
IT?
YOU’RE ALL THAT’S STOPPING YOU

A BAT CYCLONE forms around them. Within it, Matangi looks

like she’s actually trying to relate - the bats move aside to
reveal Matangi’s history... Flickering shadows on a wall
showing how she was trapped in this clam... by Nalo.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
FOR ME I’M STUCK LIKE STATIC
CAN YOU IMAGINE?
A LIFE THIS TRAGIC IN THE GLOOM!
YOU’VE GOT A CHANCE SO TAKE IT
I KNOW YOU’RE SCARED BUT LIFE’S
UNFAIR!
IT’S FULL OF CHOICES BIG AND SMALL
BUT TRUST THE FALL
AND YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL!
62.

Matangi’s offers Moana her oar -- but doesn’t let go,

instead, Matangi rises, taking Moana with her they climb into
the air, bats swirling around them as Matangi implores Moana
to take this lesson to heart. And to Moana’s credit -- she’s
listening... and learning. They climb still higher -- Moana
finally looks down and sees the same swirling, FOREBODING FO
below. Matangi nods, encouraging Moana to let go and fall
into it. Take the risk... go into the unknown... And Moana...
considers... then, decides that yes... she’s ready to try to
Get Lost... She nods and Matangi lets go of the oar.

Moana rockets through the fog... but quickly finds... it’s

not scary... it’s exhilarating as she ends up in a swirly
tunnel of exciting discovery! Matangi joins her, elated!

MATANGI (CONT’D)
GET LOST!
CUT LOOSE!
AND LOSE YOUR WAY!
THERE AIN’T
NO FUN
IN HOLDING BACK, BABE
ENJOY THE THRILL
OF LIVIN’ DANGEROUSLY
YOU’VE GOT A LONG
LONG WAY TO GO
KEEP PLAYIN’ SAFE
YOU’LL NEVER KNOW
THE RULES ARE OURS TO BREAK!

MATANGI (CONT’D)
GET LOST!

As Moana approaches the end of the “ride” - she finds herself

at the edge of a cliff. There are swirling fog below...
Roiling and more uninviting than ever. BUT... above her --
the “exit light”... it’s right there, within in reach. The
path she’s been trying to get back to -- safety! But before
she can head that direction, Matangi floats down in front of
her -- ready with a challenge:

MATANGI (CONT’D)
There’s always another way,
Moana... what are you gonna do?

Moana thinks... looks between the “Exit Light” and the

swirling dark fog, then back to Matangi with a grin.

MOANA
Get lost.

Moana makes her choice, and dives straight into fog! Matangi,
shares an impressed look with Peka, then dives after her.
63.

MATANGI (O.S.)
GET LOST!

SEQ. 345.0 - "THE PEARLY GATE”

INT. PEARL CAVERN - MOMENTS LATER

Moana lands... inside a pink swirling mist -- where is

she...?

POP WIDE TO REVEAL: Moana’s INSIDE the PEARL we saw in the

opening scene with Maui... the petroglyph of Nalo and
Motufetū etched on the ground. She’s trapped -- this can’t
be. Was this all a trick? Moana looks around frantically for
a way out -- there must be another way...

She whips her oar around and the swirling pink mist reacts,
revealing on the ground beneath her feet: a GIANT CARVED
FACE... a PORTAL like the one she and Maui used to reach
Lalotai in the first film -- beautiful light peeks through
from within. Moana smiles.

MOANA
There’s always another way.

Matangi swoops down -- watching Moana from outside the pearl,

impressed.

MATANGI
(re: carved face)
Portal of the gods... won’t get you
all the way to Motufetū... but it’ll
“shorten the commute” for you and
your crew... and Mr. Coconut Oil.

MOANA
Who’s Mr. --

BOOM! Through the side of the CAVERN - Maui and the team
crash in, their canoe skittering to a stop. Maui launches
into the air, every bit the hero he is.

MATANGI
Always has to make an entrance.

MOANA
(elated)
MAUI?!

MAUI
Do not fear! You have been rescued!
64.

Ignoring Maui, Matangi turns to Moana and smoothly gestures,

“after you” and Moana steps up and does a powerful haka.

MOANA
Huakina! Huakina! Ue hā, Ue
hā......hi!

BOOM! The PEARL explodes and the MOUTH of the carved face
OPENS, with GLORIOUS light and fog/smoke billowing from
within! It’s beautiful and awe-inspiring and reveals a
thrilled Moana inside, beaming...

MAUI
(stunned)
She opened it...?

Maui looks at her, still stunned, as swirling fog and smoke

begins to envelope the entire chamber (including a very happy
crew, who is stunned by what they see). The LIGHT OF THE
TUNNEL BLOOMS! It’s telling us the “TRANSPORTER IS ABOUT TO
ACTIVATE.” Then... FLOOMP! Their whole canoe gets sucked into
the vortex. Maui gets sucked in as well. As he swirls he
looks to Matangi.

MAUI (CONT’D)
This was your plan -- to keep me in
a snot cave because you wanted us
to go together!?

MATANGI
Well, I certainly did not keep you
for the conversation.

MAUI
Huh? Wait!

Off Maui’s irritated face, WHOOSH! Maui’s SUCKED into the

vortex, leaving Moana, who looks to Matangi, expectantly.

MOANA
Well, shall we...?
(off Matangi’s hesitation,
realizing)
You can’t leave...

Matangi looks longingly at the portal, then back to Moana.

MATANGI
Break Nalo’s curse and... maybe
then we’ll see each other again.
(one last smile)
Good luck Tautai Moana. “You got
this.”
65.

Moana gives Matangi one last look, then dives in. The Pearl
closes, leaving Matangi and her bats alone again. Beat.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
If Nalo finds out I helped we’ll
die by lightning.
(then)
Maui looked good...

Peka’s does a spit take -- coughing up a bone. WTF, you’re

into him?

SEQ. 405.0 - “BETWEEN REALMS”

INT. BETWEEN REALMS - MOMENTS LATER

Bright “cotton candy” clouds whip past Moana’s face, but she
can’t see anything, like a skydiver going through a cloud.
Until she lands on... the deck of her canoe!

Where the Moni, Loto, Kele and Pua are celebrating -- with
Kele doing the weirdest dance you’ve ever seen...

KELE
Happy dance. Happy dance!

LOTO
I’m kissing the pig!

Loto kisses Pua, who’s like what the hell?!

MONI
WE’RE IN A PORTAL OF THE GODS!!!
CHEE-HOO!

MOANA
(ecstatic)
You guys!! Together again! Plus
Maui?! Wait where’s Mau--

Moana realizes she’s starting to hover... is she flying???

Maybe -- but as she rotates in midair she finds, she’s
suspended on MAUI’S HOOK, (by her shoulder strap). He lifts
her so they are face-to-face.

MAUI
‘Sup, Curly.

MOANA
MAUI!

She tries to hug him, but can’t reach since she’s suspended.
66.

MAUI
Could’ve told me we were doing new
outfits, been rocking leaves on my
cheeks for a thousand years.

Moana wriggles herself free and gives him a big hug. He can’t
help but be happy to see her. Moana looks to Mini-Maui.

MOANA
Hey, buddy, I missed you.

Mini-Maui’s like “aw shucks, me too.” Moana double high fives

him, realizes she just high-fived Maui’s chest.

MOANA (CONT’D)
Oh, sorry. That’s weird. Was that
weird?

MONI (O.S.)
This is the greatest day of my
life!

Moni pops up out of nowhere with a siapo: Showing Moni double-

high-fiving Maui’s chest in the same way. What a weirdo. Maui
looks horrifed. Moni, not reading the room at all raises his
fist for a fist bump --

MAUI
Love this guy, not creeping me out
at all. Can I talk to you for a
second--

Maui quickly diverts Moana away... Leaving Moni hanging in

the background, but no worries, Moni fist bumps himself,
unperturbed. Maui’s got something important to say, but Pua
races up to Moana for a hug.

MOANA
Pua! This is Pua!

Moana spots Kotu on the mast, sharpening his weapon. She’d

almost forgotten about him!

MOANA (CONT’D)
And did you meet the Kakamora? I
thought he doomed us in that clam,
but turns out it was super great,
‘cause otherwise I never would’ve
met Matangi - who’s great by the
way - and found you and now we’re
gonna break Nalo’s curse and--

Maui literally pinches Moana’s lips shut...

67.

MOANA (CONT’D)
(half-pinched lips)
Sorry, you go.

MAUI
You’re all gonna die.

MOANA
What?
(realizes he’s not joking)
What?

MAUI
Nalo didn’t just hide Motufetū in a
storm, he hid it in a MONSTER
STORM, in a cursed ocean you can’t
escape from, and then sunk it to
the bottom of the sea!
(off Moana)
Which means a human can’t reach it,
so unless I break the curse, you
just bought a one way ticket to
deadsville, which is why I didn’t
want you coming out in the first
place, ‘cause now you’re stuck and
you’re gonna die, your crew’s gonna
die and this time so is the
chicken.

Heihei bocks and “SCREAMS.” Kele slowly places a half a

coconut on his head to get Heihei to calm down. The crew (and
Moana) look at Maui, panicked.

MAUI (CONT’D)
But... it’s great to see you.
Annndd, we’re here.

Before Moana can react, their canoe is spit out into:

SEQ. 410.0 - “WELCOME TO THE FAR SEA”

EXT. “FAR AWAY OCEAN” - NIGHT

The water rushes in a circle to form a WHIRLPOOL beneath

them. A bright, glow emanates from its center as... MOANA’S
CANOE BURSTS OUT OF THE WHIRLPOOL and launches up into the
air in a swirling torrent of water -
68.

EXT. MOANA’S CANOE - CONTINUOUS

The crew tries to get their bearings. Moana looks up and

sees: a NEW SKY. These are stars she’s never seen before.
They’re foreign and striking. But Moana still has Maui’s
warning ringing in her ears.

MOANA
(laughs awkwardly)
Good one, Maui... but this place
looks perfectly... nice. And --
Look! The constellation! It’s right
there!

A beat as they all look -- from sail to stars. Moana’s right -

- this is the place they’ve been looking for. This is a good
thing! But Maui just crosses his arms nonchalantly. He’s
going to let Moana figure this one out for herself.

MOANA (CONT’D)
(trying hard for optimism)
Guys, the ancestors wouldn’t have
called, if we couldn’t do this...

MAUI
Unless it was a butt dial.
(then)
That’ll make sense in 2000 years.

MOANA
Tautai Vasa said reaching Motufetū
is the only way to give our people
a future.

Moana turns to her crew, hoping they’re on her side -- they

are -- but as the banter between Moana and Maui continues,
they’ll ping pong back and forth like they’re watching
Olympic... pickleball.

MAUI
If he knows so much, how come he
didn’t tell you it was **WHISTLES
FOR EMPHASIS** sunk?

On Mini-Maui: Looks at Moana, sorry, he makes a good point.

MOANA
(thinking, then lightbulb)
Because... he... told me to follow
the fire in the sky and that led me
straight to you.
(really laying on thick)
Which...
69.
MOANA (CONT’D)
makes sense, ‘cause if Nalo thinks
he’s stronger by keeping people
apart, then maybe the way to break
his curse is by coming together!
You lift the island, and I step on
it.
(to Mini-Maui)
Maui and Moana together again!
You’re so amazing!
(then, really convincing
herself)
This is gonna work. Right, ocean?
Ocean...

But the ocean doesn’t respond. There’s a sudden shift in the

air... as Moana jumps down to the outrigger and really looks
at the ocean for the first time... she reaches her hand to
the water and is concerned to see, the ocean looks sick.

MAUI
Moana... the ocean... cannot help
you here.

Moana reacts... this is a big hit... she gazes out at the

water, feeling lost without her friend, the Ocean. How will
she get through this? But just as she Moana starts to
worry... a GLOW beings to approach in the ocean. AN ‘AUMAKUA!

MOANA
(filled with hope)
Gramma...!

But Maui sees the glow and understands it to be something

else completely.

MAUI
Actually... I believe that’s a
welcome gift... from Nalo.

Suddenly the glow changes... this isn’t an ‘aumakua...

it’s... BOOOSH! A Taniwha -- a massive, monstrous eel!

Kotu reflexively shoots it with a BLOW DARTS. Hitting it in

the gums as it opens it’s fang-filled mouth. Kotu nods like,
NBD, you’re welcome. But the Taniwha manages to spit the dart
out, sending it flying and almost nailing Kele in the head.
Guess old tricks won’t work here.

The taniwha rises, ready to strike -- when BAM! Maui KOs him
with his hook. But more are coming.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Haaa! Take that, sucka!
(lands,turns to crew)
70.
MAUI (CONT’D)
Humans, get to your positions, work
together, and let’s DO THIS!
(crew scrambles very Bad
News Bears, they suck!)
We really gotta talk about your
recruiting process.

Moana jumps into action as MANY MORE TANIWHA APPROACH UNDER

WATER. Moana expertly steers the oar away from some of the
glowy monsters...

MAUI (CONT’D)
Gramps! Down below!

Maui opens the cargo hold to shove Kele in with his fruiting
plants, but when he opens it, they discover it’s full of...
MUDSKIPPERS, the ones from Maui’s “jail cell.”

MAUI (CONT’D)
Hate these guys.

Maui shoves Kele unceremoniously down into the hold anyway.

KELE
Hey! I AM AN ELDER!

MAUI
And I’m 3000 years old!
(then, opening it again)
Which makes me elder-ER.

Maui shuts the hold and preps for battle, gonna be fun taking
these down. Before he bolts --

MAUI (CONT’D)
Just gotta outrun ‘em ‘til sunrise.

LOTO
Oooo! Are they nocturnal?!

MAUI
(no idea what that means)
Uh, sure.
(then)
CHEE-HOO!!

Maui shape shifts into SHARK MAUI and dives into the ocean.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Show me what you got!

Maui powers up his hook and flies by as a GIANT HAWK, winking

as he heads to take on the taniwha.
71.

MONI
Did he just wink at us?!

Moana looks to the MOTUFETŪ CONSTELLATION in the distance --

that’s the direction she needs to go in... then down at the
taniwha between the canoe and that goal. CHARGED.

MOANA
Hang on!

LOTO
Moana, we can’t turn that tight
with this sail, we have to --

MOANA
It’ll work!

MONI
Moana!

Moana dodges one underwater Taniwha, but Loto is right, the

canoe can’t turn fast enough and another hits them from the
other direction, the canoe lurches - and Moni loses his
balance, goes flying into the water.

Behind him... a taniwha approaches. Moni sees it and starts

swimming back to the canoe as fast as he can. But... he can’t
outswim a giant eel.

MOANA
Moni!!

MONI
MOANA! MOANA!

MOANA
Moni!!!

Suddenly, the taniwha rears up, his jaw opening... and

WHOOSH, it swallows Moni whole. Diving deep into the water.

Maui hears Moana scream and re-directs, diving down after

Moni. A BEAT... Moana watches helplessly...

MOANA (CONT’D)
No!

Moana pushes hard on the oar to turn the canoe around, but it
has been broken by the Taniwha!

LOTO
The oar!
72.

A taniwha rises up above the canoe -- fangs bared. Moana

isn’t going to be able to get the canoe away... Moana and
Loto look up at the monster... There’s nothing they can do...
this is is it.

But then, a warm light hits the taniwha, the glow spreading
and the Taniwha suddenly stops and turns to swim away...
SUNRISE! All the other taniwha follow. The battle is over...
But they didn’t all make it.

MOANA
MONI!?

An interminable beat and then... Maui hauls Moni onto the

canoe. He’s alive!! Moana starts toward him but there are
still glowing Taniwha approaching... just as the last one is
about to attack (we don’t see it emerge from the water). On
Moana, reeling...

MOANA (CONT’D)
Moni...

SEQ. 415.0 - “SAFE-ISH FOR NOW”

EXT. TANIWHA ATOLL - FAR SEA - DAWN

Their damaged canoe has washed up on the shore of an

uninhabitable fragment of an island -- that’s really the
SKELETON OF A TANIWHA. The whole crew is exhausted. Moni’s
slumped with his head in his hands. Pua is limping. Kele’s
picking through the destroyed remnants of his plants.

MOANA
(searching for words)
We’ll figure this out... The
ancestors...

LOTO (O.S.)
Moana...

REVEAL: Loto’s found the remnants of a wrecked canoe. Moana

immediately notices the sail and the oar -- and the symbols
on them. She reaches down to wipe some kelp off, confirming
her suspicion...

MOANA
Tautai Vasa’s canoe...

MAUI
(being ”the bigger man”)
Uh, it’s a bad time to say I told ya
so, so (I’m not gonna do that) cause
that would make you feel worse...
73.

MOANA
Just...

MAUI
I believe in you... No one else
does, there you go, walk it off,
champ.

That’s not what Moana needed to hear right now. Shaken, Moana
steps away to collect her thoughts. Mini-Maui snaps a tattoo,
like DUM-DUM, not cool.

MAUI (CONT’D)
What? I was being nice.

Mini-Maui cranks his nipple -- twisting it hard to get his

point across.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Ow -- Stop - ow! -- hey no purple
nurples --
(and again)
Ow! Okay -- I’ll talk to her! --

EXT. OTHER SIDE OF THE TANIWHA ATOLL - A LITTLE LATER

Moana’s looking out, a thousand yard stare. The cumulation of

her failures weighing hard. As Moana thinks, unsure of how to
move forward... Maui approaches from behind, though we can’t
see him yet. Moana tries to hide her crying.

MOANA
I know, Maui... It’s just...
(still not facing him)
Every time I think I know what I’m
supposed to do... everything
changes. I can’t -- MONI ALMOST
DIED!
(then)
-- if I’m the reason our people’s
story just ends...

She finally turns to Maui. REVEALING: Sharkhead Maui.

MOANA (CONT’D)
This is serious.

SHARKHEAD MAUI
(deadpan)
Is something... distracting you?

MOANA
Ugh...
74.

SHARKHEAD MAUI
(conceding)
Maybe breaking the curse is like
you said, we gotta work together. I
pull it from the sea, but a human
has to land on its shores.

Maui pokes Moana with her oar to get her to look at him but
she refuses to turn around. His tricks aren’t working on her
this time.

As Moana groans, Maui plops down next to her, see-saws them

accidentally. He’s struggling with sincerity... but tries.

MAUI
(awkward throat clearing)
Look, I get it. No one likes
sucking at their job.

MOANA
(annoyed, still upset)
Why are you even here?

MAUI
Because... because I’ve... been low
before... and I couldn’t see a way
forward, and then someone came
along... someone who I
underestimated... and she lifted me
up...

MOANA
I haven’t done anything right since
I left my island.

MAUI
Hey! There is a way out... You
wanna get through it... you just
gotta... chee hoo it.

MOANA
You are so bad at this --

MUSIC STARTS TO BUILD HERE... MAUI’S SONG STARTING TO

BEGIN... WHETHER MOANA WANTS IT OR NOT!

MAUI
I’m the best at this --
(then)
I was a human... But now I’m a
demigod. You never know what’s
next.
75.

Maui raises his arm and for a brief moment, his Tatau glow.
The demigod neon! Moana clocks it before it disappears...

MOANA
Yeah I do: Nalo’s monster storm.

Moana startles as Maui spins the Taniwha fang she’s sitting

on... THE MUSIC BUILDS BIGGER!

MAUI
Well, you wanna get through it?

MOANA
Stop trying - woo!

AND AS MINI-MAUI plays percussion, WE’RE RIGHT INTO THE SONG!

SEQ. 420.0 “CHEE-HOO” - SONG

MAUI
HERE’S THE THING
YOU’RE DOWN IN THE DUMPS
YOU THINK YOU’RE WAY OFF YOUR GAME
BUT YOU CAN TURN IT AROUND
C’MON REMEMBER YOUR NAME
DON’T WASTE ALL THIS ENERGY
CUZ YOU GOT THE REMEDY
AND I KNOW YOUR LEGACY!
(he dances around her)
YOU’VE GOT GREATNESS INSIDE
AND YOU JUST GOTTA BELIEVE
YOU THINK YOU DON’T HAVE THE TRICKS
BUT THEY’RE RIGHT UP YOUR SLEEVE

Mini-Maui rolls up Maui’s tatau sleeve for emphasis.

MAUI (CONT’D)
THESE WATERS ARE THREATENING
BUT YOU BRING THE RECKONING
SO DROP ALL THE FEAR AND THE QUESTIONING
I NEED A... CAN I GET A...

Maui spins Moana into a fantasy world -- filled with colorful-

stylistic tapa backdrops and a wild carnival feel. This is
Maui’s version of a pump up song -- every moment designed to
get Moana out of the dumps and back on track.

MAUI (CONT’D)
MAUI
CHEE HOO!?
WHO ARE YA...
WHO ARE YA...
WHO ARE YA GONNA BE
(MORE)
76.
MAUI (CONT’D)
YOU’RE GONNA, YOU’RE GONNA
A-MAKE SOME HISTORY
COME ON A- MOANA
GO GET YOUR DESTINY
COULD I GET A...
COULD I GET A...
CAN I GET A...
CHEE HOO!?

Maui introduces Moana to a FUN-HOUSE STYLE obstacle course

filled with waves, tornados, and at the end: Motufetū and
Nalo! The goal of the game is to get past the obstacles and
defeat Nalo -- but as Maui sets Moana on her course --
coaching her like she’s Rocky Balboa -- it proves more than
she’s up to -- especially in her mental state.

MAUI (CONT’D)
YOU GOTTA, YOU WANNA
YOU NEEDA LEVEL UP
GO SHOW ‘EM, GO SHOW ‘EM
TELL ‘EM ENOUGH’S ENOUGH
COME ON A-MOANA
GO GET YOUR DESTINY
COULD I GET A... LEMME HEAR A...
COULD I GET A...
CHEE HOO?!

When Moana fails the obstacle course, Maui takes a new tact.
He breaks it down for her, using his hook to hit a coconut
off a mudskipper tee to knock out funhouse Nalo. See how easy
it is!

MAUI (CONT’D)
HERE’S THE DEAL
THAT BULLYING STORM GOD SKIPS LEG
DAY FOR REAL
CAN YOU IMAGINE THE LEGEND THIS
EPIC VOYAGE REVEALS?
YOU THINK THAT IT’S DOOMSDAY?!
TO ME IT’S JUST TUESDAY
YOU KNOW I DON’T COME TO PLAY
COME TO PLAY

They need to train. Hard! Think demigod cross-fit. They power

lift Motufetū -- covered in mudskippers, use taniwha as
ropes, monkey bar across taniwha bones -- it’s fun and silly,
but totally serious business!

MAUI (CONT’D)
AND YOU’RE CLEVER,
I NEVER GIVE YOU ENOUGH CREDIT
AND UNDER PRESSURE YOU MEASURE UP
YOU EVEN TAUGHT ME A LESSON!
77.
MAUI (CONT’D)
HEH, I’M NOT SURPRISED, YOU LEARNED
FROM THE BEST
IT TAKES A WHOLE LOT, BUT COUNT ME
IMPRESSED
CAN’T GIVE UP NOW, YOU GOT ME
INVESTED!
NOT MANY HUMANS THAT I CALL A
BESTIE!

Buoyed by Maui’s training, Moana’s feeling ready to try the

obstacle course again.

MAUI (CONT’D)
CHEE HOO!
WHO ARE YOU, WHO ARE YOU, WHO ARE
YOU...
GONNA BE
YOU’RE GONNA, YOU’RE GONNA
A-MAKE SOME HISTORY
COME ON A-MOANA
GO GET YOUR DESTINY
COULD I GET A...
COULD I GET A...
CHEE HOO!?

Moana makes it further than before, but she loses her focus
and goes tumbling off a wave, only to be caught in Maui’s
hook. She’s frustrated and defeated. She walks off pissed,
but Maui’s not going to let her quit. There’s too much at
stake so he tries a new tactic. He hooks her and launches
them both up to the stars.

The nebula forming an image of Maui’s hook -- as the bounce

across the stars. Moana’s never seen anything like this.

MAUI (CONT’D)
IT’S MY TURN TO GIVE A MOTIVATIONAL
SPEECH
IT’S YOUR JOB TO FINALLY PRACTICE
WHAT YOU PREACH
BECAUSE OF YOU I’M A BETTER ME
AND I DIDN’T EVEN THINK THAT WAS A
POSSIBILITY!

Above them in the nebula, images of Moana saving Maui in the

first film are formed in the swirling, glowing nebula: her
outsmarting Tamatoa, talking him out of his depression...
standing tall against Te Kã...

MAUI (CONT’D)
YOU GOT ME OUT OF MESS AFTER MESS
DEMIGOD IN DISTRESS
BUT NOW THE ROLES ARE REVERSED
YOU’RE BEING PUT TO THE TEST...
78.
MAUI (CONT’D)
IT’S FINE ‘CAUSE WE GOTTA PLAN
FOR BREAKING THE CURSE
AND EVEN THOUGH ODDS COULDN’T BE
WORSE
I’M MAKING A BET ON THE BRAVEST AND
GREATEST OF WAYFINDERS I’VE EVER
MET!

The last image in the nebula is Moana standing with her oar,
it’s a hero pose. Maui reaches up and takes the oar from the
nebula. It becomes solid in his hands... and he gives it back
to Moana. A sign of his faith in her. Moana is moved by
Maui’s pep talk. She needed that...

Maui’s glad to help. But now, it’s time to move on. He licks
his lip and raises a CONCH to blow... but it’s not just any
conch, it’s an electric fire conch! As Fire blasts out of the
shell...

Maui and Moana are suddenly in a stadium surrounded by

thousands of rocking out mudskippers. As he finishes his
conch solo -- Moana’s confidence builds. Maui lights the tip
of her oar on fire and Moana does her own Siva Afi (fire
dance) -- pumped up and ready to take one last go at the Nalo
funhouse obstacle course.

MAUI (CONT’D)
COULD I GET A
‘CAUSE I NEED A
LEMME HEAR A
CHEE HOO!?
YOU GOTTA, YOU WANNA, IT’S TIME TO
LEVEL UP!
GO SHOW ‘EM, GO SHOW ‘EM
TELL ‘EM ENOUGH’S ENOUGH
COME ON A-MOANA
GO GET YOUR DESTINY

Maui is with Moana every step of the way as she dominates the
obstacle course! She can do this. Confidence building!

MAUI (CONT’D)
COULD I GET A
LEMME HEAR A CHEE HOO!
MOANA! COME ON A
UNLOCK YOUR DESTINY
LEMME HEAR YA...
MAKE ‘EM FEAR YA
CAN I GET A..
CHEE HOO!!

Ahead of Moana, Maui pulls up the cutout of Motufetū just as

Moana leaps into the air -- just in time to land on top.
79.

MAUI (CONT’D)
COME ON A-MOANA
GO FIND YOUR DESTINY
CAN I GET A...
LEMME HERA A...
CHEE HOO!!

Nalo -- defeated -- falls apart. And the siapo behind him

lights up in a gorgeous pattern. Winner Winner!!! As our SONG
ENDS.

MOANA
Chee hoo!

SEQ. 421.0 - “CREW ON BOARD”

Back on Taniwhat island. Moana and Maui are perched back on

the taniwha bone. Moana’s energized and ready to go pump up
her crew.

MAUI
Go get em, princess.

MOANA
(heading off)
Still not a princess.

MAUI
Well, a lot of people think you
are.

Mini-Maui hears that and looks... TO CAMERA.

EXT. SKELETON ATOLL - MOMENTS LATER

Moana returns to find the crew standing in a group, like

they’ve been waiting for Moana and Maui. It’s hard to
decipher their emotional state... Moana’s acutely aware of
all they’ve been through, that she’s asked of them. She wants
to make it better, do for them what Maui’s just done for her.

MOANA
I know what I’ve asked of you is...
a lot... that our canoe is in
really rough shape - but I belive
together we...

But they surprise Moana (and us) by separating to reveal...

THEY’VE ALREADY REPAIRED THE CANOE. That’s right, while Moana
and Maui were off on their own, the team rose to the occasion
and got the work done themselves. And they’re proud.
80.

LOTO
We found a way to fix it... with a
little help from the ancestors.

Moana sees that the repairs to their canoe were completed by

using materials from VASA’S OLD CANOE. Vasa’s sail now
proudly incorporated into their sail. His OAR.

KELE
I did the decorations.

We see some etched symbols on the canoe. It’s sweet.

KELE (CONT’D)
We used the chicken.

Reveal: HEIHEI’s head is covered in sawdust, Kele used him

like a pencil. He looks bedraggled. Less sweet.

MAUI
Respect.

Moana looks to her crew then to the storm in the distance...

That’s the direction they’ll go in....

MOANA
(the fighter in Moana’s
really shining through)
Nalo wants to end our story... But
we’re not letting that happen...
(then)
We just have to outsmart him. Find
some new tricks he’s never seen
before.

LOTO
Well, I have been working on some
ideas. Also we do have a demigod.
Sure, he’s a little scruffy, but,
you know, better than nothing.

MONI
(sotto, to Maui)
I think you look great.

MAUI
(moving on)
Ooookkayyy. We sail to the heart of
Nalo’s storm. Once I raise the
island, you all have to get to it.
81.

MOANA
It’ll be harder than anything we’ve
faced before. So, if anyone wants
to stay...

Kotu gives her a warrior’s salute. He’s ready, they all are.
Moni steps forward with Moana’s oar, what’s he gonna say?

MONI
I, uh... spent my whole life
learning our people’s stories.
(presents Moana’s oar)
Because of you I get to live one.

Moved, Moana smiles. She couldn’t be prouder of this crew.

MOANA
Alright then... let’s break a
curse.

They all turn and steadfast into the horizon and impending
storm, ready to go. They’re more a team than they’ve ever
been in this moment, Maui included, and they’re ready to take
on whatever comes next!

SEQ. 518.0 - “WAVES LIKE MOUNTAINS”

EXT. MOANA’S CANOE - A LITTLE LATER, EVENING

WIDE as the canoe approaches the building storm. Maui’s

stretching, shaking out his muscles.

MAUI
Been a while since I pulled an
island from the sea.
(off Mini-Maui)
I know I have to bend at the knees.
(off Mini-Maui)
I have great posture - you know
what, you: armpit.

Maui flings Mini-Maui into his armpit. Then does an “armpit

fart” - which “shoots” Mini-Maui around his back. Maui
chuckles, amused with himself -- Kele chuckles in the
background - surprise, Kele likes Maui now.

KELE
He’s growing on me... like a wart.

MONI
That’s beautiful.
82.

Kele ignores Moni, and looks over to see Moana secure Pua and
Heihei in the cargo hold... with the mudskippers, who now
treat Heihei like a mother. Pua looks to Moana, worried.

MOANA
We do this, we make it home.

Thinking of home, Moana opens her necklace, takes one last

look at Simea’s sea star inside. Reminding her why she’s
doing this... and even more importantly why she’s going to
make it through!

MAUI (O.S.)
Curly?

Moana looks up to see they’ve almost reached the edge of the

storm. It’s intimidating but Moana’s up for the challenge.

MOANA
(determined, optimistic)
It’s a storm, just a really big
one...

But then, there’s a BOOMING CLAP OF THUNDER -- like a

starting gun -- it ignites the STORM CELL that suddenly
expands with an unnatural, explosive force. Purple lightning
flashes violently as the clouds roil and 8 TENTACLE-LIKE
WATER SPOUTS -- powered by a tatau-patterned lightning
coursing through the inner core -- descend from the clouds.
And at the center of the storm -- three massive, roiling
WATER SPOUTS churn and move around the EYE -- making it all
but impossible to get to the center. It’s a truly monstrous
storm -- cursed -- and to punctuate this -- the lightning and
the clouds morph and twist to form the enraged face face of
NALO... the same face Moana saw in her vision of Tautai Vasa.

NALO
[THUNDEROUS ROAR -- LIKE STORM IS
AWAKENING]

MAUI
Well now I kinda miss the lava
monster.

BOOM! In the distance, a lightning bolt hits the water,

sending a distant wave their direction. Kele puts on his
coconut floaties. This is their first test.

MOANA
We can go around it...
(then to the crew)
Everyone, get to your positions...
be ready to switch it up.
83.

Everyone gets into position -- their is no panicked

scrambling this time -- they’re ready for this. Maui grips
his hook, which starts to glow.

MAUI
(nods, then to Loto)
You, smart-stuff, you might wanna
check the sundial.

LOTO
Why? What time is it?

Maui smiles, Loto fell right into the trap.

MAUI MONI
IT’S MAUI TIME! (jumping the line)
It’s Maui time!

Maui looks to Moni, and finally gives him a little love.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Let’s lift an island and show this
windbag who’s boss! Chee hoo!!!

Maui SHIFTS into a HAWK and takes off.

KELE
Bring the thunder!

Fun driving music, think PASIFIKA THUNDERSTRUCK, will boost

us as Maui slices and dices tornados, loving it! Our crew
cheers him on as they prep for the wave racing their way!

MOANA
(over the storm,
exhilarated)
I mean, it’s kinda fun, right?!
Chee hoo!!

Maui shape shifts into MAUI BUG and gets sucked into a
tornado! Moana watches -- oh no! -- but a beat later the
tornado explodes as WHALE MAUI breaks through the spinning
vortex, obliterating it.

MAUI
Booyah!

Above on the mast, Kotu signals! The path around the wave is
now BLOCKED by another tornado!

MOANA
Ok, new course! We go over the
wave! Loto?!
84.

LOTO
On it!

Loto pulls the boom, it whips into position and they approach
the wave. As they crest the wave and slam down on the other
side, Kele is really amped up -- he’s all in!!

KELE
EAT IT, NALO!!

NALO
[THUNDEROUS ANGRY ROAR]

The crew cheers. They got this! Psyched, Maui attacks a

TENTACLE but... it maneuvers out of the way and aims straight
for the canoe.

MAUI
Ha! Ya missed!
(sees it going for the
canoe, turns back from
the center of the storm)
Alright, yeah. Change of plans

NALO
[THUNDER RUMBLING, GEARING UP]

Maui chops the attack TENTACLE in half! Victory!

SEQ. 523.0 - “THE MONSTER AWAKENS”

EXT. NALO’S MONSTER STORM/FAR SEA - MOMENTS LATER

IN THE SKY: Maui rockets up -- SHIFTING back to human form--

MAUI
(yelling, to Nalo)
Yeah! Count it!

Mini-Maui points to... a TENTACLE ahead... barreling down on

them. But just as Maui goes on the offense, the TENTACLE...
AVOIDS HIM... and dives AROUND Maui... weird.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Ah! Come on!

The TENTACLE continues, racing straight for the canoe, they

won’t be able to turn in time.

MOANA
They keep coming for us! We gotta
turn! Guys?!
85.

As they try to turn, a tighter turn than last time, and they
have to cantilever to do it, but just as they think they’re
gonna pull it off, the mast begins to splinter.

MOANA (CONT’D)
No, no, no, no!

They turn the canoe away from the storm and retreat, but the
TENTACLE keeps coming for them! Just as it’s about to hit,
Shark Maui launches from the sea in time and bites the
TENTACLE, dissipating it.

SEQ. 527.0 “CHANGE, OF COURSE”

Maui tumbles to the deck of the canoe. Moana rushes over.

MOANA
Maui --

MAUI
It’s okay. I got half of ‘em.
(then)
Scoreboard --

Mini-Maui marks the scoreboard for Maui’s progress versus the

tornadoes, but... Then they both realize: The storm is
regenerating. Not great. Mini-Maui undoes his checkmarks.
Maui looks to the storm, irritated.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Well... Nalo’s a cheater. And a
coward... for avoiding... ya know.

Maui gestures to himself. But that gets Moana thinking.

MOANA
(realizing, smiling)
He doesn’t care about you...

MAUI
Oh he cares about me --

MOANA
I’m saying it’s humans he wants to
stop. Us.

KELE
(truly confused)
Why are you... smiling?
86.

MOANA
‘Cause we can use it. Distract
Nalo, let him come after us while
Maui reaches the center and lifts
the island! We switch it up.

Maui and Mini-Maui share a look. Moana is about to counter,

when Maui beats her to it.

MAUI
Okay. Curly, you couldn’t
outmaneuver the storm before, how
ya gonna do it now?

LOTO (O.S.)
I think I have figured it out.
(off Moana’s smile)
I will need to chop the mast.

Maui looks to the storm. Knows the stakes. Back to Moana, he

doesn’t like this.

MOANA
If you keep coming back to help us,
we’ll never break Nalo’s curse.
(then, serious)
We can draw the storm, Maui. It’s
the only way.

Maui looks at the storm -- the tentacle’s regenerated. Nalo

seems... angrier... He hates this, but he believes in Moana.

MAUI
Go as fast as you can.

Maui heads to the front of the canoe, hesitates. He turns

back to Moana... as the storm rages around them and has a
rare moment of vulnerability.

MAUI (CONT’D)
(genuine, emotional)
Uhh... Look, I could pull up a
million islands, but if you’re not
there to land on ‘em, then...

MOANA
(this is gonna work)
See ya out there, Maui.

MAUI
I’ll see ya out there, Moana.

Maui gets his head in the game, turning to the crew.

87.

MAUI (CONT’D)
(to Pua and Heihei)
Bacon, eggs.
(powering up)
GIANT HAWK!

Maui powers up and transforms into... A LITTLE FISH. The crew

is like, uh-oh.

FISH MAUI
So serious.
(shifts to Maui)
See ya on the island!

WHOOOSH! Maui heads into the sky, toward the center of the
storm, one last nervous glance back to see... the STORM turn
on MOANA and the crew, starting to build.

SEQ. 531.0 - “THE EYE OF NALO”

EXT. EYE OF THE STORM - SAME TIME

Moana watches the GIANT TENTACLE RACING TOWARD THEM.

MOANA
Loto...???

LOTO
Move!

REVEAL: Mudskippers jump off the mast as WHAM! LOTO CHOPS THE
MAST! As promised!

KELE
The spinny thing is coming!!

Loto gets to work -- quickly re-engineering the canoe, as if

her whole life has led to this moment. This is her nirvana.

LOTO
Probably should’ve prototyped this.
(then)
Bingo bango!

Loto then... throws a LOAD of cloth into the air and FLOOMP!
It catches the wind and opens: it’s a parachute SAIL! Made of
the old sail - patched together with siapos. As it catches --
the canoe instantly picks up speed and starts to outrace the
TENTACLE. Loto did it! Moana jumps in to help Loto maneuver
the pivot point.
88.

MOANA
Loto, you’re a genius!

LOTO
Well, I couldn’t have done it
without Moni!

We angle on the parachute sail, which we can now see has been
stitched with MONI’S FANFIC SIAPOS! As they race away from
the TENTACLE.

BACK ON MAUI: Soaring into the eye -- barely squeezing

between the GUARDIAN WATER SPOUTS... and into: THE EYE OF THE
STORM. Maui scans the water and as lightning flashes, it
illuminates the outline of Motufetū deep below the water.

This is it. Maui throws his hook into the sea!

UNDERWATER: Maui’s hook snags the hole of the island and

lights up!

IN THE SKY: Maui feels the line go taut and starts pulling.

WITH MOANA: They keep racing, staying just ahead of the

tornado!

MOANA
Hold on!

WITH MAUI: He pulls as hard as he can.

MAUI
(to Mini-Maui, straining)
Not a lot of leverage!

SEQ. 533.0 “WHAT MAKES A DEMIGOD”

EXT. EYE OF THE STORM - SAME TIME

IN THE EYE: Maui shifts into a hawk and flies up to get more
momentum, then shifts back to Maui to pull again. This time,
KACHUNK! The island shifts and starts to lift. Sending a
shockwave across the ocean.

BACK ON THE OCEAN: as the shockwave reverberates...

MOANA
He found Motufetū!

MONI
Yes!
89.

NALO
[SCREAMS IN PAIN]

MOANA
Nalo knows he found it... The curse
won’t be broken ‘til we reach the
island! We still have to reach the
island! GO!

Moana and Loto turn hard, racing to reach the center of the
storm, which is already charging up to deal a blow to Maui.

IN THE EYE: Mini-Maui tries to get Maui’s attention as the

storm above re-charges to attack Maui.

MAUI
(through gritted teeth)
Lit...tle busy.

Maui’s making hard won progress... but just then, tatau-

lightning strikes from the eye and SNAPS the rope, sending
Motufetū sinking back down to the bottom... and causing a
massive wave to form that’s headed right toward our crew.

BACK ON THE WATER:

LOTO
It’s another wave!

MOANA
We have to go straight into it
before it breaks!

Maui transforms into Hawk Maui, diving down to retrieve the

rope then launching back upward to start pulling the island
up again. He sees Moana in the distance.

MAUI
Get here, kid.

BACK ON THE CANOE:

The wave is bigger than anything they’ve faced yet.

MOANA
We need more speed!

LOTO
We have to drop weight!

Kele springs into action -- he knows what to do!

IN THE HOLD: Kele frantically throws their cargo out of the

canoe -- including his precious plants. He picks up Pua.
90.

Is about to toss him overboard too -- thinks better of it --

and tosses him back into the hold.

As the canoe starts to rise up the face of the wave --

MONI
It’s too steep!

MOANA
Turn! Turnnn!

IN THE EYE: Maui pulls with all his strength -- but keeps his
eyes on the wave. Moana and the canoe have disappeared on the
other side -- will they make it?? A long, tense beat.

WHOOSH! The parachute sail flies over the wave -- with Moana
and crew right behind! They did it! They land in the EYE of
the STORM. Moana looks up to Maui -- ready to end this!

MOANA (CONT’D)
Lift it!

But just as Maui looks like he’s going to succeed, the STORM
ABOVE GOES BONKERS and lets loose the biggest BOLT of tatau-
lightning yet. It erupts from the eye and is a DIRECT HIT ON
MAUI. Seizing him like he’s stuck in an electrical outlet.

MOANA (CONT’D)
NO!!

ON THE CANOE: The crew watches in horror -- as the

electricity rips through Maui! No matter how hard he fights --
he can’t break free. But he doesn’t let go of the rope -- he
keeps pulling at that island... hoping by some miracle he can
still raise it.

MOANA (CONT’D)
MAUI!!!

IN THE SKY: Maui looks to Moana... he knows he’s almost out

of time... the lightning starts TO PEEL HIS TATTOOS OFF HIS
BODY. Truly a punishment that could only be inflicted by the
gods -- the undoing of a demigod. Maui cries out in agony as
Mini-Maui burns too...

And here we iris down: this moment between Moana and Maui...
it’s like they are right next to each other. Its as close to
a goodbye as we’re gonna get. Maui looks at Moana, trying to
tell her it’s gonna be okay with a smile loaded with emotion.

MOANA (CONT’D)
(small)
Maui...
91.

KABOOOM! The lightning coil holding Maui explodes blasting

out a shockwave -- Maui drops from the sky! The island
sinks... his hook dislodges, and Maui... falls in SLO-MO...

SEQ. 537.0 “HEART OF DARKNESS”

Moana and the crew watch in horror as Maui falls -- Moana’s

screams are swallowed as the shockwave CAPSIZES the canoe
throwing the whole crew into the turbulent waters.

THE SOUND DROPS OUT -- and we’re with Moana -- all she can
hear are the scattered frantic cries of her crew and Nalo’s
thunder over her heartbeat pounding in her ears.

LIGHTNING FLASHES illuminate Moana as she fights through the

storm to find her crew and haul them onto the over-turned
canoe.

The STORM RAGES all around them -- the monstrous GUARDIAN

WATER SPOUTS close in -- eliminating any hope of escape.

NALO
[THUNDER BOOMS, A WARNING]

The THUNDER draws Moana’s eye upward to the ring of purple

lightning -- sparking as it recharges. Moana looks to her
crew -- wishing there was something she could say to make
this better -- but she can’t. Suddenly, a wave knocks her off
the canoe and she goes landing hard on a piece of debris.

MONI
Moana!

Her SEA STAR is knocked loose, she scrambles after it, but
misses -- she WATCHES IT SINK INTO THE MURKY DEPTHS BELOW...
Her last bit of hope... gone.

KELE / LOTO / MONI (ECHOEY)

We’re lost! / I don’t know what to
do! / there’s no way out -- there’s
no way!

Moana looks at the storm closing in around them... Their

canoe capsized. Nalo’s lightning re-charging... They won’t
survive much longer. She has to act now! But how...?

Moana looks back as the star disappears into the darkness...

but in this hopeless moment... an idea starts to take hold...
Moana’s mind starts to race... remembering her journey... and
all that she’s learned.
92.

MOANA
(internal, desperate for
it to be true)
There’s another way...there’s
always another way...
(a spark forming... then
calling back)
There’s another way to reach the
island! There’s another way!

Moana climbs up on the debris. And the crew realizes... she’s

planning to swim to Motufetū herself. Swim to the bottom of
the ocean!

CREW
No, Moana!/ Moana, you can’t!/ It’s
too far!

MOANA
Find Maui!

MONI
Moana! MOANA!

And before they can stop her, Moana DIVES into the swirling
darkness! Into the unknown. As she hits the water...

NALO
[THUNDEROUS SCREAM]

SEQ. 540.0 “BEYOND”

As our SONG BEGINS in instrumental only.

UNDERWATER: Moana swims through the darkness looking for

Motufetū. It’s impossible to tell up from down. But she keeps
swimming!

ABOVE WITH THE CREW: The EYE is enraged and the LIGHTNING
RECHARGES... but is bordering on unhinged... a flash of
lightning illuminates...

MAUI floating in the distance... Barely conscious. The crew

jumps to action, Moni grabs debris and starts to paddle,
anything to get closer to him in time.

BACK TO MOANA: she keeps swimming... the world moving to slow-

mo as... the STREAK OF LIGHTNING -- races through the
water... JUST MISSING HER...
93.

The force of the lightning on the water throws her back, the
turbulent churn of the water disorienting her -- she fights
to right herself, turning back toward the purple light of the
lightning below as it -- ILLUMINATES...

MOTUFETŪ! It’s 400 yards below! Moana redoubles her efforts!

WITH THE CREW: Maui’s starting to sink in the foreground as

the canoe inches closer -- they won’t get there before he
drowns. This cannot be the end of Maui’s story.

But suddenly, Kele of all people rises up and ... launches

himself in the water. It is not graceful. Not even
particularly confidence inspiring. But he starts swimming
toward Maui. The rest of the crew can’t believe it. Kele!?

Kele struggles to get Maui back to the canoe -- But suddenly

PUA is there. Pig-paddling and offers himself up as a life-
preserver to help Kele with Maui’s weight. It’s a sweet and
heroic moment in the midst of the chaos -- as

FLOOMP -- Moni and Loto help get Maui flopped back on the
deck, weak and injured, but NOT DEAD.

As BOOM! A second lightning strike erupts from the sky --

UNDERWATER: The lightning chases Moana. She fights with

everything she’s got to push forward. She can see the top of
the submerged peak of Motufetū. Simea’s SEA STAR lying right
on top. HER TARGET! She’s so close...

AND WE GO TO SLO-MO: as the LIGHTNING is millimeters away,

Moana gives every last breath to REACH the island -- PLANTING
HER HAND against the land... connecting... for the briefest
moment...

GOLD LIGHT bursts off the island -- magic is happening, but

will this be enough to break the curse? Moana doesn’t have
time to find out, as...

WE SLAM INTO REAL TIME and Nalo’s lightning BLASTS through

Moana in a massive pulse of energy -- there’s no way a human
survives that! The lightning glows white hot as Moana’s body
is thrown off the island.

UP ABOVE: Our crew braces for impact as they are about to be

taken out by a massive wave but are instead hit with GOLDEN
LIGHT -- as it blasts across the ocean and the sky.

They look up in surprise -- in time to see: the storm

unspooling and disappearing -- replaced with the gorgeous
blue tones of the sky. The ocean too is healed... swirling
green replaced by the familiar deep blues of Moana’s friend
the Ocean. The curse is truly broken!
94.

In this moment... Maui rouses... A beat as he processes what

he’s seeing -- the storm disappearing. He looks around and
sees everyone... except Moana. Maui catches Moni’s worried
glance at the water. Realization dawns... NO NO NO!

MAUI
Moana... Moana!

Weak and stripped of his tatau and his hook, as human as

we’ve ever seen him, Maui dives in after her.

SEQ. 542 - “MOANA REBORN”

Maui swims only to discover... Moana’s floating form deep

below... he catches her, distraught, cradling her limp body
in his arms. As his own feet sink onto the top of Motufetū.
She’s gone. And there’s nothing else he can do...

BUT THE OCEAN -- Moana’s Ocean... her friend... RUSHES in

from all directions and swirls around them... pushing out the
cursed waters until a protective space is formed around Maui
and Moana... the water shimmers and pulsates...

MAUI
(broken)
Moana... Moana... Moana... you
can’t...
(tiny, smaller than we’ve
ever heard)
Please... please...

And that’s when Maui bows his head... A tear slides down his
cheek and he begins... to sing... a plea, a prayer to the
gods and the ancestors... He will not let this be the end...

MAUI (CONT’D)
(small, pleading)
AUE AUE LE FAIGATA
UA PA’U FA’ANOANOA
AUE AUE FA’ATAGA OLA
LENA O’U TALOSAGA

As Maui finishes this simple verse... a blue glow appears

across his face... he looks up, surprised to see:

The ‘aumakua WHALE SHARK swimming straight toward them,

before shifting into TAUTAI VASA in his ancestral form...
Maui looks at Vasa... a spark of hope forming... as Tautai
Vasa begins to sing the chant.
95.

TAUTAI VASA
TELE TELE MANA E O TE VAVAU
TAU KE TU KE MANUMALO
KE MANUMALO

As Vasa sings, all around, dozens more ‘aumakua and ancestors

join Maui and Vasa within this protective bubble --
encircling Maui and Moana and we see a small, but growing
hope rising within in Maui. Help has come...

And then... a HAND reaches out and takes Moana’s... a

familiar voice starts to sing. Maui looks up and finds Gramma
Tala sitting across from him. They share a look -- so much
love for this young woman between them...

GRAMMA TALA
AUE AUE MANA E O TE VAVAU
TAU KE TU KE MANUMALO
KE MANUMALO

As the chant continues... a GOLD GLOW starts to emanate...

sparkling across the water. And the ancestors join hands...
forming a continuous spiral from the ocean inward all the way
to Moana... The GOLD GLOW starts to pass between each of
them... the combined power of the ocean and the ancestors
forming together... channeling into Moana...

Moana’s whole body starts to glow. We see the shock of it on

Maui’s face... something powerful is happening...

Suddenly a GOLD GLOWING DEMIGOD TATAU FORMS on her arm...

telling the story of Motufetū and this moment... a hopeful
beat... before... Moana awakens!

Holy shit. Moana is alive!!! And the first faces she sees are
Maui’s and Gramma Tala’s. She can’t believe it! And as she
looks around -- she sees dozens of her ancestors all around --
the joy of this moment reflected back at her from each of
them... including Tautai Vasa.

Moana is completely overwhelmed by this moment... as she

takes it all in and then sees her tatau. Glowing bright. She
looks at it... then looks at Maui and realizes his tatau are
all gone... her heart suddenly breaks for him. But Maui
shrugs, smiles, anything he might have lost was worth it to
see her here again.

A beat and then... a sparkling glow of gold flickers behind

Maui -- he turns to find the ocean returning his hook. He
reaches for it and as his hand makes contact... it glows his
demigod blue -- the power races across his body and his
tataus are restored. The last of which: Mini-Maui -- returns
joyfully and hugs Maui’s chest. Maui is moved. This is more
than he expected.
96.

Tears come to Moana’s eyes to see Maui healed -- while at the

same time -- the ocean glows bright again... delivering a new
gift. MOANA’S OAR. She reaches for it and sees it’s been
altered: etched with her story... it’s beautiful and as she
makes contact with it... the glowing gold from her tatau
emanates down and her oar begins to glow -- the same as
Maui’s hook. Her gift for being the bridge, the connector --
of people, of the ocean... of the past and the future...

Moana can’t believe it. As Tala steps toward her proudly and
leans in to give Moana a hongi... recognizing that so much
has changed... but their connection is forever...

GRAMMA TALA (CONT’D)

Together still... just a little
different...

Tala steps back and glows bright as she transforms -- and her
Manta Ray form swims past, rocketing up toward the surface, a
reminder to Moana that her job is not yet done.

Moana nods to Maui. Let’s finish this! Maui agrees. He powers

up his hook and launches toward the surface. Moana watches
him go, eyes shining... remembering how much bigger this is
than her story alone... She sings as our REPRISE BEGINS.

MOANA
WE’LL GO BEYOND
AND WE’LL REACH IT SIDE BY SIDE

ABOVE WATER: Maui soars to the sky, sending his hook back
toward the island as he uses the other end of the rope to:
LASSO THE SUN! Once secured... He starts to pull.

MOANA (CONT’D)
WE ARE RISING WITH THE TIDE
NO SHORE LEFT UNEXPLORED
RACING TOWARD BEYOND
WHERE WE ALL BEGIN AGAIN
WHERE OUR SKY AND OUR HORIZON
NEVER END

BELOW THE SURFACE: Moana strikes her canoe into the water,
the glow of her magic forming a new path to the surface as
the island rises and she sing.

MOANA (CONT’D)
WE CAN RISE
WE WILL RISE
WE WILL RISE
WE WILL GO BEYOND

BOOM! sMoana explodes through the water standing atop the

SUMMIT of MOTUFETŪ.
97.

BELOW: The crew looks up in awe! Holy smokes! This is better

than anything they’d imagined... as our SONG ENDS.

SEQ. 550.0 SHORES OF MOTUFETŪ

EXT. SUMMIT OF MOTUFETŪ - CONTINUOUS

Moana looks around... the whole ocean out before her -- an

echo of our opening scene. She takes it all in, looking to
the horizon. She plants her oar and pulls her conch out --
her power causing it to glow gold too. She takes a deep
breath and...

BAWOOOOOOOOOOOO! Sound explodes out of the conch with godlike

power... the sound itself, REAWAKENS the EIGHT DORMANT OCEAN
CHANNELS of Motufetū and they come alive once again! The
WATER RUSHES through the channels between the BLOOMING CORAL
to the broader ocean -- racing to keep up with the sound of
Moana’s conch as they spread across the sea!

One of the channels opens under the CREW on the canoe. They
watch it proliferate.

As Moana watches from above... pride and humility...

realizing that this is so much bigger than she ever imagined.

SCREEEEEAW! Hawk Maui dive bombs, shifting to land beside

her.

MAUI
You leveled up...

MOANA
(pretty cool)
Yeah... Uh, so does this mean...?

She looks to her tatau -- the glow fading as it settles into

a black tatau... the way Maui’s do.

MAUI
Yes, my tattoos are still cooler
than yours.

Mini-Maui face-palms. Way to kill the moment.

MAUI (CONT’D)
What?

Jubilant cheers ring out below. Moana looks down to see: The
Ocean right the canoe and together with an AMPED UP CREW hit
the shore --
98.

EXT. MOTUFETŪ SHORE - CONTINUOUS

Moni, Loto, Kele, Kotu, plus PLONK! Pua and Heihei -- jump to
the sand. Moana races down to meet them.

CREW
(talking over each other)
Moana! You’re alive! KELE SWAM! AND
PUA!

They crash together in the world’s best group hug. Moni’s the
first to notice the change in Moana though -- he clocks her
tatau. She grins -- more on that later! The Ocean swoops in
to envelop them all -- thrilled to be reunited.

MOANA
Ocean!!!!!!!!! I missed you!

As this warm moment settles we hear... Maui crouched over Pua

and Heihei -- trying to fatten them up.

MAUI
Come on, come on now, a little bit
more...
(notices them noticing
him)
Raisin’ an island really works up
an appetite.
(to Pua)
Oh, you smell so good.

Maui leans in to get a big whiff of Pua -- Pua notices and is

slightly startled. Moana shoots Maui a “don’t even think
about it” look.

EXT. MOTUFETŪ, KEYHOLE - SUNSET

Golden light illuminates the PETROGLYPHS etched into the

iconic keyhole arch of the island... THE SYMBOL OF MOTUFETŪ
AS THE HEAD OF THE OCTOPUS... the same image from Moni’s
siapos... surrounded by an ocean’s worth of islands.

MONI
It’s... Motunui... home.

Moni points to an image of Motunui... it looks so tiny, in

the constellations of islands of the Pacific. Underscoring
how vast and POPULATED the seas are. Kotu makes a sound and
points to HIS ISLAND.

KELE
That one’s his. I now speak Kakamora.
99.

LOTO
There’s so much out there...

MOANA
Yeah. And who knows, maybe one day
we’ll find...

BAWOOOOO! They all freeze, look at Moana. Did someone just

blow a conch. Wasn’t her.

Moana spins and looks to Heihei... who’s... Blowing another

conch shell from his throat... a beat and then Kotu whacks
Heihei on the back like he’s saving a baby from choking.
Heihei spits out the shell.

MOANA (CONT’D)
I’m gonna need you to stop doing
that.

BAWOOOOOOOOOOOO! This time though... it’s not Heihei. Moana

looks to her crew -- could it be? Is this really happening???
Moana races to the edge of the keyhole and looks searchingly
toward the horizon. A BEAT and then... the silhouette of a
NEW CANOE!

MONI
People?! IT’S PEOPLE!

Moana and the crew look excited to each other!!!

EXT. MOTUFETŪ FAR SHORE - MOMENTS LATER

Moana races to the shore, her crew a step behind her. The NEW
WAYFINDER ecstatically jumps off the canoe and races toward
Moana. It’s an incredible moment for all of them to see other
people for the FIRST TIME.

But before the moment can settle -- BAWOO!!! Everyone turns

and sees another canoe appear. MORE PEOPLE?!

BAWOO!!! A third canoe appears! People are coming across the

channels from all over -- this is incredible!

As Moana takes it all in, Maui sidles up next to her and

gives her her oar. Even he’s impressed by this moment. They
share a smile and look out at the horizon... as we HEAR the
beginnings of what will build to be BEAUTIFUL CHORAL MUSIC...

SEQ. 552.0 REUNION TOUR

100.

EXT. MOTUNUI - DAY

TRACKING ALONG THE OCEAN UNTIL WE FIND: the crab from our
opening cruising across the sea until he lands on a new
shore. Only to find: Simea. Her adorable face leans in
playfully curious... when:

KABOOM! Out of nowhere, Maui lands with an explosion of sand.

He gets his bearings, dusts himself off. Then looks around.
All the villagers on the beach freeze -- coated in sand and
awed by the demigods arrival. They’ve never seen him before!

MAUI
Boom! Nailed it.

VILLAGER
(only one unimpressed)
Ugh, this is a mess!

MAUI
You’re welcome!

Two coconut climbing OILY BOYS, slide down the coconut trees,
slack-jawed and wide-eyed onto their butts. One of them whips
back his hair. Maui glances at them, loving the attention.

MAUI (CONT’D)
(to the Oily Boys, others
vamping)
Hey, how’s it going? Awesome hair
whip.
(then)
Alright, guys, I’m looking for a
Simea?
(then, to a villager)
Hi.
(Back on task)
Is there a Simea here?

SIMEA (O.S.)
Ahem! I’m Simea...

Maui hears the little sound and is surprised to find Simea

waaaay down by his knees -- covered in sand. She grabs his
ear.

MAUI
(dusting off her head)
You’re her, alright. Uh, lemme just-

Maui tries to dust the sand off her and find what he’s
looking for in his grass skirt, doesn’t have the hands... he
spies the Moanabes (and Bua) watching him, wide-eyed and
tosses them his hook.
101.

MAUI (CONT’D)
Ah, Moanabes. Hold that a sec?

The hook knocks them over, but they hold their own.

MOANABES
I thought you’d be bigger/ Yeah,
LIKE A LOT BIGGER!

MAUI
(ignoring the Moanabes)
Okay. Your sister sent me... with a
present for you. Straight from
Motufetū.

Maui gives Simea a NEW SHELL FROM MOTUFETU... IT IS

CYLINDRICAL, WITH A HOLE IN THE MIDDLE (THE SHELL EQUIVALENT
OF A BAGEL.) Simea can’t believe her eyes.

SIMEA
Whoa! What’s it do?

Maui holds it up to Simea’s eye so she can look through it...

and there she sees: MOANA AND HER CREW ON THE CANOE BURSTING
OVER THE REEF.

MOANA
LITTLE SIS!!

SIMEA
BIG SIS!!!!!!!!

Moana jumps off as the water continues to part -- so the

sisters can run toward each other.

MOANA
LITTLE SIS!!

SIMEA
BIG SIS!!!

Smashing into a tight squeeze! A moment later, Tui and Sina

crash into Moana. A giant family reunion of a hug...

Simea pulls Moana by the cheeks -- like she did at the

opening, thrilled to see her sister again.

SIMEA (CONT’D)
(re: the rock, whispering)
I like what you brought me.

MOANA
(grinning)
We may have brought a little more.
102.

Simea, Sina and Tui look at Moana questioningly as Moana

turns to show them:

DOZENS OF CANOES from around the OCEAN appear on the horizon

following Moana’s canoe toward Motunui. Moana brought
PEOPLE!!!

SEQ. 555.0 - “MOTUNUI MEETS OCEANIA”

INT. FALE - DAY

An ‘ava ceremony in progress with Moana, Tui joined by

WAYFINDERS from around the ocean.

MOANA
This is just the beginning.

Tui and Moana share an emotional, loaded look, this is the

beginning of something new... and there’s more to be done...
As we CUT TO:

- A new sail is painted with the motif of Motufetū and the 8

channels... And we tilt up to find... they are BUILDING A NEW
CANOE!

- Loto shows a fellow ENGINEER her adze. The engineer gives

her... a HUGE ONE! Loto, thrilled, smashes an old canoe!

- Moni shows off his new friendship with Maui by terrorizing

Super Sassy Kid with Shark Maui. As they fist bump...

- Kele packs up more fruit for another adventure... followed

by Pua and a line of MUDSKIPPERS.

- Simea gives Moana a new shell to take with her... but

surprise! It’s the crab from our opening! She takes it back
and hands Moana a NEW SHELL.

- Maui picks up Heihei. Licks his lips.

MAUI
(falsetto)
Boat snack!
(then, seeing BUA)
Boat snack upgrade!

The Moanabes shelter Bua from Maui.

- The sail is hoisted. Moana says goodbye again to her island

and heads off on the next adventure as Simea joyfully waves
from the Moanabes canoe!
103.

- KAKAMORA ISLAND: Kotu reunites with his father and the

other Kakamora on their HOME ISLAND. The Blobfish, thrilled,
CRIES and knocks a bunch of Kakamora out as CUT TO:

OPEN OCEAN: Hawk Maui races across the sky, through the
keyhold of MOTUFETŪ and far beyond toward:

Moana at the front of their REFURBISHED CANOE... Maui shifts

and lands beside her. He quirks an eyebrow as if to ask,
Where to next?.

Moana smiles at Maui, grabs a rope and runs to the side of

the canoe, jumping down, and positioning herself right above
the water. She has no idea what the future holds, but she’s
ready to find out. Her tatau glows gold as she strikes her
magical oar into the water and a PATH FORMS toward the
horizon... showing her the way.

As the canoe takes off toward all the adventures that lie
ahead... Moana grins brightly, ready for all that comes next
as we CUT TO CREDITS!

SEQ. 560.0 - NALO INTRODUCTION

EXT. DISTANT REALM - NIGHT

Matangi stands in the midst of clouds, smug in her victory...

but more than a little......nervous.

Above Matangi - on a dais made of cloud, a figure emerges...

tattooed and imposing, this is the real NALO, god of storms.

KABOOM! He sends a lightning bolt, zapping Matangi’s bat,

Peka. He flies off, smoldering. Matangi cringes.

NALO
A human should never have been able to
reach Motufetū... or break my curse.

Matangi slyly crosses her fingers behind her back. Plays coy.

MATANGI
Well, I, of course, have no idea how
she did it...

But Nalo sees right through her act. KABOOM! Another

lightning strike, but this one lashes out and grabs Matangi
by her wrists -- revealing her crossed fingers, locking her
in place -- the same as it did Maui...
104.

MATANGI (CONT’D)
(now enraged)
Nalo! I paid my debt. We are
finished...

NALO (ALT)
No... we’re just getting started.

Thunder rumbles... Nalo starts to glow, and RISE... it’s

terrifying. We hear a deep, thundering laugh... bigger and
bigger, like, a little too much... Nalo stops thundering
completely, as we realize, that laughing is NOT NALO, it’s...

TAMATOA! Climbing over the edge of a cliff, he appears, ready

to battle... looking pretty worse for wear.

TAMATOA
Oh, sorry, are we not doing evil
laughs? Didn’t realize! It’s just
that she humiliated me as well, I
completely relate to what you’re
feeling right now. If you ever want
to talk about it- AH!
(ZAP! his shell falls off,
not reading the room)
Ok, too soon. Do you want to hear a
song? I’ve got a new one, it’s
called “Funky Crab Legs.” SINGS:
Funky crab legs! Funky crab legs!
One, two, three, four, five, six,
seven, eight, nine, ten! Something
like that? Good for counting!

As Tamatoa mugs for the camera, we’re OUT!
