1. The heat capacity sulphuric acid in Btu/(lb-mol °R) is given by Cp = 23.06 + 2.071 × 10-2 T
where T is in °R. What is the equivalent expression if heat capacity is given in (a) kJ/(kmol K)
and T is in K. (b) kcal/(kmol ℃) and T is in ℃.
2. Stefan-Boltzmann law states that the emissive power is proportional to the fourth power of
absolute temperature. Stated mathematically, Eb = σ T4 where Eb is the emissive power in
Btu/(ft2h), σ is the stefan-Boltzmann constant, and T is the temperature in °R. What is the value
of σ in W/(m2K4), if its value in FPS units is 0.171×10-8 Btu/(ft2h °R4).
3. The flow rate of a gas mixture consisting of 60% ethane, 25% hydrogen nad 15% carbon
dioxide is found to be 200 m3/h at 300 K and 1.2 bar. (a) Determine the composition of the gas
in weight percent. (b) Express the composition in mol/L. (c) What is the flow rate in kg/h?
4. A natural gas has the following composition by volume. CO2 – 0.8%, N2 – 3.2%, and CH4 –
96%. Calculate (a) The composition in weight percent. (b) The average molecular weight. (c)
The density at standard conditions in kg/m3.
5. Ethylene at 500 bar and 375 K is contained in a cylinder of volume 0.03 m3. The critical
properties of ethylene are 282.4 K and 50.4 bar. How many kilograms of ethylene are there in
the cylinder? Use the Van – der Waals equation.
6. Air is cooled to 80 K at 101.3 kPa. Calculate the composition of the liquid and the vapour phase
at this condition assuming that the mixture behaves ideally. The vapour pressure of nitrogen
and oxygen at 80 K are 135.74 kPa and 30.04 kPa respectively.
7. One cubic metre of a gas at STP is to be dried from a dew point of 300K to a dew point of
285K. (a) How much water must be removed? (b) What will be the volume of the gas at STP
after drying. The vapour pressure of water is 1.4 kPa at 285K and 3.56 kPa at 300K.
8. The percent saturation of a mixture of acetone vapour and nitrogen at 105 kPa and 300K is
found to be 80%. The vapour pressure (kPa) of acetone is given by the Antoine equation with
constants, A = 14.39155, B = 2795.817 and C = 43.198. Calculate (a) The molal humidity. (b)
The absolute humidity. (c) The partial pressure of acetone. (d) The relative saturation. (e) The
dew point.
9. Moist air contains 0.025 kg water vapour per cubic metre of the mixture at 313 K and 101.3
kPa. Calculate (a) The partial pressure of the water vapour. (b) The relative saturation. (c) The
absolute humidity of the air. (d) The percent saturation.
10. The molality of aqueous solution of LiCl in water is 10. The density of the solution is 1.16 g/mL
at 350 K. Determine (a) The weight percent of LiCl in the solution. (b) The molarity of the
solution at 350 K. (c) The normality of the solution at 350 K. The composition of the solution
in mole percent.
