Even Semester 2021-2022

Finite Element Analysis (MA 424)
Mid-Semester Examination
Full Marks: 25 Date of Exam: 21-02-2022

Please read the following instructions carefully.

• Your submission must be neatly typed or hand written. The front page of your solution copy must
include your roll number, email-id and discipline. • Submit only ONE PDF file on google classroom.
Do sign at the top and the bottom of every page of the PDF file. A page without your signature will be
discarded for evaluation. • No query will be strictly entertained. If any question is found mathematically
wrong, full marks will be awarded if attempted. • Start answering each question on a fresh page. • All
the notations and terminologies are usual and as per the class note.

1. Construct weak form and, whenever possible, quadratic functional for the following boundary value
problem:
𝑑 𝑑𝑢
(𝑢 𝑑𝑥 ) + 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 0 for 0 < 𝑥 < 𝐿 (5)
𝑑𝑥

𝑑𝑢
(𝑢 𝑑𝑥 )| = 0, 𝑢(1) = √2.
𝑥=0
Also, derive elemental equation by taking linear piecewise polynomials if possible.

2. Apply Ritz finite element method to solve the following boundary value problem
−𝑢′′ + 𝑢 = 𝑥; 0 < 𝑥 < 1, (5)
𝑢′ (0) = 1, 𝑢′ (1) = 2,
by taking linear piecewise polynomials for two elements of equal lengths.

3. Use variational approach to derive elemental equation of the following problem by taking quadratic
approximation of 𝑢(𝑥 ):
𝑑2 𝑢(𝑥)
+ 𝑢 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 , (5)
𝑑𝑥 2

subject to boundary conditions

𝑢(0) = 0, 𝑢′ (1) = 1,
and solve it by Ritz finite element method for two elements of equal length.

4. Use Galerkin finite element method to solve the following problem:

𝑑2 𝑢(𝑥)
+ (1 + 𝑥 2 )𝑢(𝑥 ) + 1 = 0, (5)
𝑑𝑥 2

subject to boundary conditions

𝑢(1) = 0, 𝑢(−1) = 0,
by taking linear piecewise polynomials for two elements of equal lengths.
5. A thin steel plate having two elements is subjected to a load, P =1200 N at node-2 as shown in
following figure. The thickness of the plate is 25 mm, E= 250 GPa and mass density=7850 kg/m3.
