Course on the Perfect Tenses
In English, the Perfect Tenses are verb tenses used to express actions that are linked to another
moment in the past, present, or future. They indicate that an action took place before another
event or time. There are three main Perfect Tenses: the Present Perfect, the Past Perfect, and
the Future Perfect.
1. The Present Perfect
Formation:
The Present Perfect is formed with the auxiliary verb "have" (in the present) followed by the
past participle of the main verb.
Affirmative Structure:
Subject + have/has + past participle
Example: I have worked here.
Negative Structure:
Subject + have/has + not + past participle
Example: She has not finished her homework.
Interrogative Structure:
Have/has + subject + past participle?
Example: Have you seen that movie?
Usage:
The Present Perfect is used in the following situations:
1. An action that started in the past and has consequences for the present:
o I have lost my keys. (And this affects the present; I'm looking for them now.)
2. Life experience (without specifying when):
o They have traveled to many countries.
3. An action that began in the past and continues to the present, with "for" (for a
period of time) or "since" (since a specific point in time):
o She has worked here for five years.
o I have known him since 2010.
Examples:
He has just eaten lunch.
We have never visited Paris.
3
2. The Past Perfect
Formation:
The Past Perfect is formed with the auxiliary verb "had" followed by the past participle of the
main verb.
Affirmative Structure:
Subject + had + past participle
Example: I had finished my work before the meeting started.
Negative Structure:
Subject + had + not + past participle
Example: She had not seen him before.
Interrogative Structure:
Had + subject + past participle?
Example: Had you studied for the test?
Usage:
The Past Perfect is used to:
1. Express an action that happened before another action in the past:
o I had eaten dinner when they arrived.
2. Explain that an action was completed before a certain point in the past:
o By the time we arrived, the train had left.
Examples:
After they had finished the project, they went on holiday.
He had never been to New York before.
4
Negative Structure:
Subject + will + not + have + past participle
Example: She will not have completed the task by the deadline.
Interrogative Structure:
Will + subject + have + past participle?
Example: Will you have left by the time I arrive?
Usage:
The Future Perfect is used to express:
1. An action that will be completed before another point or event in the future:
o By the time you arrive, I will have finished my work.
2. An action that will be completed in the future before a specific moment:
o In 2025, they will have built the new bridge.
Examples:
By next week, I will have completed the project.
He will have traveled to five countries by the end of the year.
Present have/has + past Past action linked to the present, ongoing action from the
Perfect participle past.
Past Perfect had + past participle Action prior to another past action.
Future will + have + past Action that will be completed before another event or
Perfect participle moment in the future.
5
3. Future Perfect: Action that will be completed before a specific time or event in the
future.
o Example: By next month, I will have moved to a new house.
Summary of Rules:
The Present Perfect focuses on the effect of a past action on the present.
The Past Perfect describes an action that took place before another past action.
The Future Perfect describes an action that will be completed before a given time in the
future.
Practice Exercises:
1. Complete with the correct verb tense:

o I _______ (see) that movie three times.
o He _______ (already finish) his homework when I called.
2. Rewrite the sentences with the correct tense:

five years when they moved.
3. Choose the correct tense:
