Q1. Think about the details and the title of the story.

a) Why might the boy’s father make his son sleep on his own?

Ans. To make him face his fears or build his ‘character’.

b) What is a ‘hero’?

Ans. A hero is someone who does something extremely brave, usually for others’ benefit,
or who achieves an amazing feat that normal people could not.

Q4. Answer the following questions.

a) From whose perspective do we see the events?

Ans. We see events from Swami’s point of view.

b) What happens in the extract?

Ans. A father makes his son sleep alone in his office; fearing attack in the night, the boy
has nightmares until he senses an intruder, whom he attacks.

c) When in the story do you think this extract takes place? Why do you think this?

Ans. This event takes place part way into the story – the first sentence suggests it is the
middle of a conversation.

d) Where do the events take place? What clues tell you this?

Ans. Events take place in a country that has tigers and scorpions, and where extended
families share the same house, which fits India as the actual location.

e) Why do you think the writer called his story ‘A Hero’?

Ans. The boy in a newspaper story is a hero. Swami showed bravery in confronting the
night-time monster.Perhaps the writer is using it ironically.

Q5. This extract is from a short story that has some unusual elements. Discuss.

a) What, if anything, do you find surprising or unusual so far?

Ans. It is unusual that a father makes his son face up to his fears, or that the boy slept
with his granny in the corridor.

b) How might the story end in an unusual or surprising way?


Ans. The boy has attacked his own father or granny, or that he turns out to have done
something truly heroic.
